13/ There are some workarounds with trusted friends where they can use a tipping page so they enter the amount and a short-expiration invoice is then generated dynamically. But few options where receiver can issue long-term request with USD amount hard-coded.

12/ I would love to hear about any other wallets or payment systems that are working on making this a reality: I send a friend a request to pay me back $20 for dinner and days later they pay me via btc rails and I get $20.

8/ I've reached out to several custodial and non-custodial lightning wallets about this important use case, and mostly been told it's a good idea but very low priority -- far future roadmap.

7/ My understanding is that this capability is part of the #bolt12 offer spec. Merchant can make a long-lived lightning offer valued in USD - when your wallet connects later to actually pay, the bitcoin conversion is handled at that time.

6/ As far as I know, @blinkwallet is the only wallet that handles this "correctly" (i.e., dollar-based invoices that get resolved to sats at the instant the user is ready to send over bitcoin rails, ensuring you get the correct dollar amt).

5/ What you ideally want for an invoice specified in dollars is to be converted to sats at time of payment, not at the time of invoice creation.

4/ But it doesn't work for invoices to be emailed to clients to be paid over the next several hours or days. By the time they pay the invoice, the exchange rate could be wildly different, forcing merchant to deal with the volatility.

3/ This works out ok in a point-of-service app where there is less than a minute between time of invoice/QR-code creation and time when user scans it and pays the invoice.

2/ The problem is that in almost every bitcoin payment processing app, if a merchant creates a lightning invoice with a dollar value, it converts it to sats using the exchange rate at the time of invoice creation.
