Fast-growing states have embraced toll finance for new capacity, but the Interstate system is wearing out across the country and needs to be recapitalized. Better to charge users directly and shift risks away from general taxpayers.
For now, drivers pay to access just 6,300 miles of America’s 160,000 or so miles of highway. But the share may be about to grow rapidly

Fight the socialists of all parties! Support @reason's outstanding libertarian journalism that champions 'free minds and free markets' with tax-deductible donations. The next $100,000 in gifts being matched right now!

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much is a video worth—especially when it actively champions 'free minds and free markets'?

In my latest for @ReasonFdn’s Surface Transportation Innovations* newsletter, I examine a new @TaxFoundation report that considers four potential fixes to the Highway Trust Fund’s increasing dire fiscal problems: https://t.co/3wkrAalVPI *Subscribe ($0): https://t.co/2UGwi1RxeO

"At least it was expected that the Biden administration would haplessly defend an outdated regulation at the behest of union bosses. Why would the Trump administration want to follow in its footsteps?" @PostOpinions

Advancing automated track inspection technology would be an easy win for the White House.

Stop letting the Progressive Blob “Groups” drive transit into the ground, is all I ask.
Fast buses. Free buses. A stronger Fair Fares program. And of course we can pay for it! Reforms that finally price more of our endless *free parking* are just one way forward. This is how we build a fairer transit system. Riders deserve nothing less. https://t.co/SYagprXL9v

It’s strange that current Democratic Party leadership convinced itself to protect the corporate jet lobby’s subsidies and maintain poor ATC performance just because the last guy to introduce these reforms in 2017 happened to be a Republican. Al Gore was right in the ‘90s!
"Air traffic control should be a safe, boring business run by safe, boring people — not members of Congress or presidential appointees. That's how other developed countries manage it, with years of top-notch safety records to back them up." @PostOpinions: https://t.co/2vGwyLPqtk

As we @ReasonFdn have long advocated, converting air traffic control into a self-supporting public utility regulated at arm’s length is the best way to improve ATC. Since 1987, 98 countries have done so, but the U.S. is still stuck on the WWII-era model.

Safely directing thousands of commercial flights every day is too important to be left to politics.

In my latest @ReasonFdn, I explain why a new DOT proposal to restore robust hearing procedures for rulemakings related to unfair or deceptive practices is a win for air travelers. “Protecting Consumers from Defective Consumer Protection Regulation”:

As my colleague Bob Poole notes, “privatization” is a poor description of air traffic control governance reforms being discussed. Worse, supporters’ use of the term helps fuel opponents’ misinformation campaigns. “Time to Retire the P word” @ReasonFdn: https://t.co/5otTbMTsTE

FAA’s order grounding flights was completely avoidable—most countries today have self-supporting ATC utilities. It’s also misguided central planning—to ensure more geographic equity in cancellations, it will impact more people. Nothing to do with safety: https://t.co/Kj78WWv6SM

TSA should not be providing security services it regulates, a huge conflict of interest. To shutdown-proof airport security, 1) separate regulation from provision, 2) allow airports to directly provide security, and 3) allow airports to charge a user fee:
reason.org
Congress should remove TSA's conflict of interest as both the provider and regulator of airport security.
"One has $40 left in their bank account, the other is literally sleeping in their car. Many are getting their eviction notices..." Deputy Administrator Adam Stahl joined CNN to discuss the impact the government shutdown is having on the TSA workforce and traveling public.

For @ReasonFdn I examine FAA’s unprecedented emergency order requiring airlines to cancel flights to ease air traffic control staffing problems, and how Congress could shutdown-proof air traffic control by adopting the globally dominant ATC utility model:
reason.org
Required flight cuts begin at 4% on Nov. 7, increase to 6% on Nov. 11, then 8% on Nov. 13, and finally peak at 10% on Nov. 14 and beyond.

The Trump administration has waived an obscure highway safety rule blocking the rollout of driverless trucks.

Aurora’s driverless trucks can now use cab-mounted beacons instead of roadside triangles, after regulators relaxed a long-standing safety rule.

Cars are useful when conveniently parked, which is why they’re so popular. Seems like a bad idea to ignore when crafting urban design policies. To be sure, that’s not a good reason to subsidize parking. But it’s an even worse reason to subsidize other modes of travel.
U.S. cars are parked for approximately 95% of their total time in use. And this is the mode of travel we let dictate our land use and urban design policies for almost every American city.

Congress shouldn’t allow this to happen. If only there was a better way to fund and operate airport security… Fortunately, there is a better way that many countries have adopted. I’ve written the TSA Reform Act to bring those best practices to the U.S.:
reason.org
Congress should remove TSA's conflict of interest as both the provider and regulator of airport security.
Amid the government shutdown, TSA employees resort to part-time gigs and credit cards to manage expenses https://t.co/UxV3mlJB1G

The focus of Sen. Mark Kelly’s “AI for America” plan departs from other federal artificial intelligence policy proposals introduced by Democrats.
