On the eve of a new wave of anti-government protests in Peru, a group of artists from the Andean city of Ayacucho released a music video dedicated to the memory of the victims of the military repression in their hometown on Dec. 15, 2022, a massacre they witnessed. 🧵

As massive protests resume nationwide today against a political regime that killed 49 civilians, Ayacucho artists once again turn to their tradition to honor their dead with the song Llaqtapa Llakin (A People's Sadness), composed by Jorge Vivanco Vargas.

Before COVID-19, Ayacucho celebrated Carnival for decades without interruption, even during the armed conflict with the Shining Path. This year, some locals refused to participate out of respect for the victims. Streets looked emptier than usual. Bullet holes were still visible.

It was their way of defending their homeland and mourning their dead, they said. Hundreds of locals showed their support and joined in. Songs condemning the brutal repression were also sang by other troupes. There was laughter and comedy, but the overall mood was one of mourning.
