I just finished rereading Thomas Berger's "Sneaky People." This 1975 novel, set in the American Midwest in the 1930s, is hilarious. But seeing it's populated by dopes and hayseeds who use strong language, I'm sure it would get on all banned books lists right away. An excerpt:

When did companies start this habit of contacting consumers for their opinions? It used to be that if I had a problem with a product, I would follow up w/ a complaint. I can still do that, but now all companies want to contact me for every purchase I make.

I saw someone use "Shakespearean" incorrectly a couple of days ago. How did this incorrect usage ever gain traction? It's seemingly embedded in the language. It's everywhere. Nobody seems to understand that it's wrong—but I do. From a few years ago:

Why does this bug me so much? Maybe it's because I work as a copy editor. Here's my problem with the attached item. It should be "Enter your Email Address." I'm never entering an *email* whenever I see this request. I'm entering an email *address*. "Barry, get a life." Good idea.

It's several months later and I'm still waiting for him to contact me.
