Interesting despatch from farmer, Guy Watson

Hi
@GaryLineker
👋 Thought I would say ‘hi’ since I’m apparently joining you at the free speech barricades. Now I don’t actually work for the BBC but solidarity nonetheless!
#IStandWithGaryLineker
I’m sure I can speak for all Observer colleagues when I say that I am desperately sad that such an incisive and brilliant man has had to leave his job. Watching his trial by social media has been just awful.
Apparently a Tory MP called Scott Benton has worked out the carrying capacity of the British Isles and declared the UK to be full. If we're operating then on a one in one out basis, can we swap him out for someone else?
Why do we keep having to have ‘strong feelings both side’ debates on this? Plastic grass shouldn’t be on sale until the plastic grass industry comes up with a real solution for disposal, potential flood risk, micro plastic pollution and the fact that most British bees burrow.
@Jacob_Rees_Mogg
I'm going to COP27 and I'm not paying £2000 a night. Neither are any of the climate youth leaders who are going to make sure that people like you (with incredible power and influence) are held to account. Do better.
Manufactured migrants story leading front pages. Last intact ice shelf in Canadian Arctic collapsed yesterday, wildfires, record breaking temps and we are now likely to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius increase in next 5 years. Still no coverage.

This is major from the RSPB, the UK's biggest conservation charity. There is overwhelming support for action on climate and nature destruction among UK citizens. There is zero mandate for a bonfire of enviro regs. We cannot and must not stand for this.
⚠️😡Make no mistake, we are angry. This Government has today launched an attack on nature. We don’t use the words that follow lightly. We are entering uncharted territory. Please read this thread. 1/13
As you might've deduced, I am W2 in the thread that the brilliant
@JolyonMaugham
has posted. Do read if you are interested in how hard it is to report sexual assault even at an institution like the Observer, part of Guardian Media Group that claims to be invested in
#metoo
etc
For all those threatening to dob me in to my BBC bosses & get me fired from my presenting gig. I don't have one! Very rarely get a gig as a non news enviro reporter but I'm freelance. Neither do I work for the Guardian (keep up Guido!). Sad about both, but that's life! 💚🌎💚
This is the age of the environmentalist. We are ALL environmentalists now because our survival depends on it. My advice is to get to the deepest shade of green you can, as quick as possible. Truss as ever spinning in the wrong direction.
On Friday
@pressgazette
tagged me in a post along w man I accuse of sex assault & editor of the newspaper I worked for for 14 years who praised him to the hilt. After being deluged with pictures of octopus & 'fun' clips of sexual assault, I switched off but now I'm back cos...🧵
Dear Donald, it’s a commemoration rather than celebration. By way of demonstrating the difference: the end of your presidency would be a celebration. Act of remembrance at Armistice is about solemn reflection. Hard for you because it’s not about you. Try not to ruin it.
I am in Paris getting ready to celebrate the end of World War One. Is there anything better to celebrate than the end of a war, in particular that one, which was one of the bloodiest and worst of all time?
Hmm as
@DefraGovUK
appears to have hastily deleted this video featuring
@theresecoffey
hanging at the banks of the dying
#riverwye
let me describe to you what I saw and why it's a bigger scandal than the wrong type of otter footage. 🧵
Defra has a budget of c£4.6bn and c13,000 core staff and yet it puts out this video with Sea Otters illustrating the wildlife of the River Wye.
It's easy to mock - because Defra is so easily mockable - but this is the only Environment Department we have in England. And it's
As reported in the NYT, I have received an apology from Kath Viner, editor in chief and Anna Bateson, chief executive of Guardian News & Media. I am hugely relieved to get this because frankly I was struggling with the whole thing and acknowledgement makes a big difference.

1. I don’t normally read Nick Cohen’s column in the Observer. Ever since he ‘groped’ me at the photocopier (zero marks for originality) at work when I was an admin assistant in my early 20s I have avoided being anywhere near him. But I do think he is a total creep.
Talking about freedom, sat in Margaret Thatcher’s old Rover.
Earlier I spoke to
@Telegraph
about how important cars are for families to live their lives. It’s something anti-motorist Labour just don’t seem to get.
And it’s why I’m reviewing anti-car schemes across the country.
When we tried to raise the fact of serial predatory assaults by the Observer columnist he was able to use incredible excuses. According to him, we were motivated by the Kremlin, trans rights through to his own addiction issues. Unfortunately for a long while GNM seemed…
I am crying my eyes out watching
#ExtinctionTheFacts
@BBCOne
partly through fear and sadness and partly through relief that this incredibly impactful programme is cutting through. Once you watch this you cannot ignore surely.
Emma Smart has now been released on bail. An ecologist described as ‘kindest person’ by all who know her protesting about disastrous vice grip of fossil fuels gets imprisoned without trial (one of 11) and injured in custody. I’m not ok with this, are you?
Just heard that Emma Smart on remand in HMP Peterborough for non violent direct action has been seriously assaulted by prison guards, refused medical attention for her injuries and put in isolation on trumped up grounds of representing a threat to other prisoners and staff.
@ScottBentonMP
Actually I’m mainly interested in your calculations. What is the carrying capacity of UK and how do you determine whether it is full or not? Personally I think the idea that there’s a set of ordained British values as a bit subjective….
Columnist
@NickCohen4

@paulfwebster
paid tribute to the 'brilliant' and 'incisive' columnist. Last year complaints were raised by

Not surprised. When I interviewed Mr Skidmore on stage
@thetimes
#earth
he was so invested in net zero & so knowledgeable on climate I actually asked him ‘are you sure you’re a Tory’ .
@campbellclaret
(also there) implored him to defect.
I am not the only person. This is not the only case. It is clear to me now that there are many hugely talented women missing today from our industry or not at the level they could've been because they have been sexually assaulted or harassed early on...
Nick is an old friend and I’m very sad he’s leaving the Observer.
@paulfwebster
is right to pay tribute. His trial by social media has been horrible to watch.
I’m quite happy in the country I was born in and have lived in all my life thanks Lucy. It appears that you’re the one who has a problem with British values such as free speech.
Ps - As a presenter on the BBC, did you miss the memo about impartiality? 🤦♂️
@ScottBentonMP
For instance ‘tolerance’ was once considered a British value but well, it’s not really much in evidence here is it? (On the other matter, I’m not a sports presenter so hopefully I should be ok to ask you about your calculations etc. phew).
Another bit of my James Lovelock interview from 2005, 'Ecosystems are here to regulate the earth and keep the climate equitable, not to provide food for us. The problem with our Christian traditions is that we think God gave us everything and we can do what we like.'
Farewell Hot Hooves! We'll never forget that time you accidentally charged underfloor stable heating to the tax payer, or the other accidental tax thing. Byeeeee!
If you want to understand the absolute state of UK traditional media and how deep misogyny runs the John Kay story sums it up. The guy literally murdered his wife but was eulogised until the last.
Ex-Sun chief reporter John Kay, an award-winning journalist who was convicted of killing his wife in 1977 and many years later cleared of conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office under Operation Elveden, has died aged 77
One week ago, the NYT published our devastating
#MeToo
account. It’s been read by half a million + and 30 outlets have covered globally. I cannot fathom that 8 days on & Guardian News & Media has done NOTHING TO APOLOGISE. Surely the Scott Trust board doesn’t think this ok?
Massive bullshit for ANY water company or part of water industry to suggest only became aware of/or had evidence recently of misuse of storm overflow drains discharging into UK waterways.
@BBCr4today
I want to say thank you for so much support in the last 24 hours since

@GoodLawProject
posted thread 🧵 on our ‘plight’ (what do we call it?! ). Very much appreciated.
@carolecadwalla
@piersmorgan
The use of ‘luv’, is a sure fire sign that a total bellend has been trounced on twitter but needs to have the last word. 🤦♀️
8 Well my work is important too. Whether I’m photocopying (then) or when I write about the climate crisis (now). Either way I’d rather not be expending energy on creeps. ENDS
Hats off to the incredible
@jane__bradley
for telling our story. Read this and tell me we don’t have a serious issue in British media. Shame on you Guardian News & Media and others.
Despite the wealth of credible allegations,
@pressgazette
chooses to flag this 'One insider said that their experience of working with Cohen did not tally with the allegations aired about him'. Who was this? Why do they matter more than me and other women? Why include?
I've spoken to about a dozen women about sexual misconduct by senior editorial figures at The Observer. They all tell the same story - most (unprompted) name the same person - of senior management just wanting them to go away. It's a proper scandal for a 'progressive' newspaper.
What we're asking for is that GNM changes in order to prevent other women having to endure this type of carry on in future. That's all. An apology would also be lovely.
So this is
@theresecoffey
essentially saying ‘sadly, the river Wye is fucked’ SADLY? Followed by a series of other sappy enviro bosses waffling on about ‘challenges’ and ‘balancing’. Don’t even start me on the otter footage. The river Wye is dying right now. This is
#ecocide
This matters for a number of reasons, for eg I cited the Press Gazette piece in my complaint to
@IpsoNews
without realising changes had been made.
@pressgazette
@domponsford
I would appreciate a conversation about when and what changes were made and why.
This mirrors some of what happened to me when I had the temerity to report a sexual assault. The only thing the observer and GNM cared about was my tweets. They shut down alternative means of dialogue then punish you for SM. Abusive?
As
@JolyonMaugham
has found out, the original
@pressgazette
piece on this sorry saga was quietly updated in Oct to the advantage of the man in question. My story appears to have been dialled down and criticism of GNM appears diluted.
Ah yes, this is a perennial favourite argument from water companies: YOU CANNOT AFFORD CLEAN WATER. What they mean is YOU WILL CONTINUE TO FUND SHAREHOLDER PRIMACY. My advice: kick the tyres of this argument and join an org that calls it out especially
@sascampaigns
Love to see his workings out. It is very complicated (and some might say impossible) to understand when a given landmass is full but Scott has obviously done the maths.
I'm sharing this because it I think it OUTRAGEOUS. Three years after I attempted to report an assault to GNM, I spoke up on social media. While most of my tweets were measured, a couple betrayed feelings of anger. For GNM's 'inquiry' this was seemingly proof that I was the issue.
no words for the disgusting mob that tried to intimidate the refugees who are living here mr surbiton. But they were bussed in and left when the police finally closed the pub. It was rent-a-thug for the benefit of a

OB on Farage’s show.
Interesting decision by bbc flagship show
@BBCNewsnight
to investigate if desperate Afghan women refugees are lying shitehawks. May we know more about the commissioning process for this please? What’s the follow up - ‘the Taliban are actually fine if you give them a chance’?
I am one of the players you wrote about. It's sad to read this. I have a question how come BBC choose to interview the male coach who left us behind and didn't fight for us? we as women were at the risk, and now he is saying we don't deserve to be safe?
@Mr_Considerate
I lost my work in journalism because I had to whistleblow on a sexual predator who she made a point of speaking up for. Perhaps some people saw this before she deleted it?
Can't stress the importance of women being able to confront systemic abuse and bullying. It is so easy to say 'trial by social media' ie STFU. But I'm sorry it's a lifeline. Without this airing nothing will or can change. So thank you again
@JolyonMaugham
This thread is 🔥. For me it feels something of a life saver too. I was plunged into despair last week after a media omertà & spectre of a cancel culture piece at our (women’s) expense. Thank you
@JolyonMaugham
for having the guts to call out ALL of this.
Earlier this week I was called by a Daily Mail journalist who told me Cohen had explained the messages he had sent on social media to a junior female colleague offering to take and send photographs of his penis as a "joke".
Just got stood down on a TV thing because I said someone should get rid of the plastic lawn in the house they just bought and restore the ecosystem. Instead they wanted me to explain how they could offset it. What?!
Heart goes out to North London residents flooded out and homeless. Guess they are about to find out how much Thames Water major shareholders inc Canadian pension fund, Abu Dhabi and Chinese sovereign wealth funds have allocated towards disaster relief.
“On behalf of Observer colleagues, I’d like to thank him for his service and wish him all the best as he moves on to new opportunities.' Just keep coming back to this. OMG.
As an aside, has anyone ever found looking after a small child more arduous than the very wealthy Cummings family? Everyone else seems to be able to get on with it. This from an email he sent to
@carolecadwalla
in a piece in 2919.
The
@RSPB
was right to speak out so unequivocally yesterday. This is one of the grimmest distortions we have seen yet. Craven manipulation of ecological reality to enable deregulation. RSPB goes from hero to zero in my eyes.
aw no. A Tory MP wasted loads of time trying to get me sacked from a job I don't have and now they deleted the tweet about me needing to be sacked etc. Modern life is rubbish.
Aw this makes me nostalgic! I loved that dress (I think this was from about 10 years ago) and I loved being on the sofa occasionally (as a freelancer!). I don't know why, but I stopped being booked to do regular reports years ago. Would love to go back though!
What the IPCC report tells us: We have lost all the biosphere privileges we had. From now it gets tougher. That will impact on health, wealth and happiness. But we can limit damage. Now we fight for every part of a a degree. 1.5 is not a tipping point. The higher we go the closer
Huge thank you to everyone who took the time to read, understand and often contact me after reading
@jane__bradley
’s piece on our story of trying to report a prolific sexual abuser in British media. It didn’t get the airtime it should’ve but it has been a catalyst for change.

She offered a tour of the Commons in exchange for £150, as part of a fundraising drive
Conversely I’ve nothing but love for my neighbours who came down to join us who formed a peaceful protection cordon outside the hotel. Our Afghan refugees have suffered incredible pain & trauma and were brought to safety
#operationpitting
and this is how they are treated? Wtf?
One in eight households in Great Britain had zero access to a private or shared garden during the coronavirus pandemic. Just a quarter of people in Great Britain live within a five-minute walk of a public park. We need to do better on this.
'They dump my effluent back into my river and I see it go past my front window.'

1. A few people have congratulated

on being one of few British papers to have the guts to report on our NYT story. Well 'yay' but also let's remember their initial take....While I'm relieved that

The editor of The Observer gave a public quote praising him to the newspaper trade body. (I still find this extraordinary). The lack of judgement was distressing and disorienting but I was naive as to how strong that ‘protect the man’ forces are. Even in liberal institutions
Lovely to see
@guardian
quoting and RTing Nick Cohen. Does
@AndrewSparrow
know why he’s a ‘former Observer columnist’? Other perspectives from south Manchester are available, you know.
3 His assault on me would not be considered a serious sexual assault but lurking in the shadows to lay your hands on an underling (or anyone) is not to my mind compatible with the position he presents. Jolyon Maugham is right to raise this (irrespective of his own behaviour).
5 Some of the responses to the twitter spat with Maugham have also led me to post. ‘So there’s only one allegation?’ Nope. Or ‘I worked with him and he was great’. Perhaps yes, but ask yourself whether you think everyone behaves equally to all colleagues all of the time. …
7 Apart from the institutional protection and privilege afforded to some, there is also the cultural. Some men’s writing is considered too important to bother with sad-girl accusations of being touched up. Perhaps it’s even part of the great dude’s writing process…
Btw I was told last year I couldn’t get a TV story on exploitation in uk fast fashion industry away because it was perceived as ‘too left wing’ to expose slavery and waste from

Nobody is causing trouble ma’am but the chronic obfuscation around PPE by inept leadership has likely cost lives. Maybe you’ve had more questions since Hancock implied the issue was misuse of PPE. If you don’t think you should have to account for that, you’re in the wrong job.
I’ve been asked about PPE a lot since Starmer attempted to cause trouble on this serious issue. This=PPE for Gloucestershire last wk. We are working locally & nationally to get the right kit in accordance with the guidelines. Its ongoing work. All together. Not divisive nonsense
Delighted to see that The Daily Mail has had the good sense to quote me regarding the government’s sensible idea to disperse sewage in coastal waters in a safe manner whilst beaches are empty.
The Daily Mail continues to be an example of rigorous & well researched journalism.👍
To prefer to back him than to hear our stories. He was able to negotiate a big cash sum (we got nothing except excruciating stress, hassle and a loss of career opportunities) and persuade a handful of people with standing to publicly back him. Used cloak of cancel culture etc

Incredible given the draconian crack down on climate protestors that this aggressive mob can announce their intentions beforehand, convene at a local boozer and harass and intimidate traumatised refugees (including many children) with impunity.
It took a couple of very brave journalists to make people hear us, definitively (or enough for the guardian apologies to come flooding in). Plus in a horrible coincidence - someone of high standing in media interviewed for background had also been assaulted.
Good to see so much reporting on
