I think I've pretty much mapped the whole field for myself: "global protection from aerosol driven epidemics and pandemics." Next: flesh out a small number of pages in appropedia, and write a substack post or three. Getting there!.

A short informative rant because there'sa good Scientific American article on reassortment. It's biologically possible, no matter how strongly we are in denial. And solutions are there, BTW!

This is a very clear article. I've been following flu for 20+ years as an epidemiologist/planner. Not a virologist but it's not entirely clear if 1918 "Spanish flu" emerged from mutation or reassortment. In either case, we're not looking, and we're not ready. #H5N1BadSoonScenario.

So. over at I've done my best to collect practical options including adjusters and sustainable reduction of respiratory contacts. In there's a mini-language to help dampen disruption of vital services & supplies. Help if you can.

Knowledge of the onset might easily be available once it's in many places (time to detection modelled to be "weeks" with current surveillance practices). Vaccines would be slow in reaching the first arm, and would manufacturing countries share good enough masks? Messy fast? So. .

If you want to know more, go to my pinned post/tweet. Summary: a bad panflu (say killing many young people) is very possible and could start abruptly, causing huge disruption that could be way more intense than what we've seen with covid - even before cases become truly abundant.
