In 2009, I found out about a child who was buried in New York City's potters field and was described as the first child to have died of AIDS in the city. This is the story of my search to understand who the child was—and to tell a lost story about HIV/AIDS
thenation.com
Who was buried in the lonely grave in New York’s potter’s field? The year-long search led to a lost world in the history of AIDS.

Wow, wow, wow. I'm in shock. Thank you to the Peabody Awards for this stunning honor. And thank you to the beautiful Blindspot crew for being the best ever. But most of all, eternal thanks to every remarkable person who shared their stories with us. 🩷

Among the most staggering and painful aspects of the AIDS crisis was the degree to which it was willfully ignored by a society that believed it was happening on the...

A group of settlers just lynched Hamdan Ballal, co director of our film no other land. They beat him and he has injuries in his head and stomach, bleeding. Soldiers invaded the ambulance he called, and took him. No sign of him since.

Every word of this. The US government has effectively disappeared Mahoud Khalil, enabled and cheered by groups like the ADL. Every person with half a conscience must speak up and speak out.
Never forget that when the American Gestapo arrived to university campuses to disappear student activists the ADL was in the front row cheering them on. All in the name of “fighting antisemitism.” These Nazi collaborators are a disgrace to Jewish history and a danger to us all.

My dear friend Elie Mystal has a new newsletter—“Elie v. U.S.”—going live via @thenation. It's great and you should subscribe. Elie's words are some of the only things keeping me going these days. Now you can get them in your inbox every Friday.

Wherein @ElieNYC does a close reading of all that is wrong, misleading, unconstitutional, and deeply fucked up about Trump's executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship. Honestly, it's even worse than I thought.
thenation.com
Almost every sentence of the order is wrong, misleading, or flagrantly unconstitutional.

As the great @ElieNYC predicted last week in this piece @thenation, the Supreme Court has ruled against TikTok. Since SCOTUS didn't offer an explanation as to why in its opion, you can read Elie's piece to get a sense of what they may have been thinking. https://t.co/2ZHER2OrPp

Most of the justices seemed unpersuaded by TikTok's arguments against the ban on the company—but that doesn’t meant TikTok is gone forever (cue Donald Trump…)

"Any decent person should hope that the ceasefire holds, but even if it does, the end of the genocide is not the end of the story. Palestine is still not free, and we have not even begun to come to terms with what Israel has wrought on Gaza."—@malsaafin

Profound thanks to @dr_yusefsalaam for this incredibly powerful piece appealing to Joe Biden to use his final days as president to pardon Billie Allen, a man who's been fighting to establish his innocence—and win back his freedom—for a quarter century.
thenation.com
Biden’s decision to commute Allen’s death sentence deserves praise and gratitude, but the president should go even further—and free an innocent man.

As wildfires scorch LA, I find myself thinking a lot about this piece that the great @BenEhrenreich wrote just over 6 years ago. It haunts me in a deep and painful way—another unheeded warning that was, itself, an echo of so many unheeded warnings.

California’s Camp Fire is a reckoning, an alarm shrieking that our leaders won’t save us from climate change—but perhaps we can.

Winter arrived just a week ago, sweeping in with nights so bitterly cold they feel merciless. My family and I have retreated to a single room, sealing the door and windows as tightly as we can, pooling our warmth beneath every blanket we own. Outside, the wind howls like a

And so it begins: having overturned the right to an abortion, the Supreme Court has officially docketed the first case that could undermine the right to contraception, specifically for poor Americans. It's a doozy. Here, @ElieNYC explains as only he can.
thenation.com
A case just added to the high court’s docket takes on the question of whether Medicaid can be used to pay for services at medical providers that also perform abortions.

Today @thenation, @lehmannchris & @elivalley team up to provide an enlightening—if somewhat nauseating—guide to some of the key influencers in Trump's orbit. These folks may not be household names, but you should definitely get to know who they are.

This weekend, @JoshuaOppenheim's film THE END goes wide across the US. It's dreamy, unsettling, & deep has hell—literally: it's set in a salt mine. This interview of Oppenheimer by Peter Sellars is a wild tour through the minds of two brilliant artists.
thenation.com
Oppenheimer’s latest film, The End, is a Golden Age, postapocalyptic musical crying out from the depths of the earth.

For 14 months, Mahmoud Almadhoun kept hope & humanity alive in north Gaza with his soup kitchen, medical clinic, and school. His life was proof, writes his brother, that even in the darkest moments, some rise to serve others. Rest in power, Chef Mahmoud.
thenation.com
His killing by Israel sent a chilling message that no one is safe, including humanitarians who stand in the way of Gaza’s erasure.

As a mom—and also just as a human—this @thenation piece by Asmaa Yassin slayed me. It's about her experience trying to survive Israel's genocide—the bombs, starvation, terror—while protecting her 2-year-old son and unborn child. Just read it, trust me.

I survived eight terrible months of genocide. Now, I’m in exile—but I can’t stop thinking about the women who have remained.

It's beautiful to be able to celebrate some rare happy news. Congrats and welcome, Mohammed! So proud to have you as part of The Nation fam. ❤️❤️❤️
So honored to say I’m now officially a contributing writer for @TheNation 🎉 From Gaza to the pages of a publication I’ve long admired, this journey has been humbling. Grateful to everyone who’s supported my voice along the way. Here’s to telling more stories that matter! ✍🏼

Here's a different take: Matt Gaetz is actually the best possible pick for Trump's AG. Yes, he's creepy. Yes, he's a predator. Yes, he'll do everything Trump wants. But: as @ElieNYC argues, he doesn't have the savvy to wield the full power of the DOJ.
thenation.com
The man is a preposterous pick who will almost certainly do terrible things—just not as terrible as what a savvier prosecutor would do.

This piece by a doctor who has remained in northern Gaza, determined to live up to the commitments of his profession, has absolutely gutted me. The doctor, Ezzedin Shehab, is 28. Death is literally all around him. Just read his words. Please. @thenation

For those trapped in northern Gaza, Israel’s ‘Surrender or Starve’ policy means the possibility of death in one way or another, at any moment.

This piece by @ElieNYC put the fear of Beelzebub in me. As he sees it, Trump's "little secret" with Mike Johnson is even more sinister than you might think. He lays it all out here...
thenation.com
The “secret” almost certainly involves a plan to install Trump in the White House if he loses the election—but this plan could be even worse than you think.
