's Desert Notebooks: A Road Map for the End of Time, layering climate science, mythologies, nature writing, and personal experiences into a stunning reckoning of our current moment.
In stores July, 2020.
Sad news. Barbara Ehrenreich, my one and only mother, died on September 1, a few days after her 81st birthday. She was, she made clear, ready to go. She was never much for thoughts and prayers, but you can honor her memory by loving one another, and by fighting like hell.
I an old enough to remember that nine days ago Hamas agreed to a ceasefire proposal that had been drafted in direct consultation with the director of the CIA and then Israel said nah and Biden said nothing and a lot more people died and still are dying.
Israel's Public Diplomacy Minister:
"Erase all of Gaza from the face of the earth. That the Gazan monsters will fly to the southern fence & try to enter Egyptian territory or they will die & their death will be evil.
Gaza should be erased!"
Still questioning a genocidal intent?
Just for clarification: ALL two million Palestinians in Gaza have been hostages for years. Israel executes as many as it wishes, regularly, in full view of the world, with absolute impunity and the full support of the US and EU.
Still unable to digest the fact that Israeli snipers were purposefully targeting children in the ICU of a hospital today. Looking through the sight and pulling the trigger, again and again and again.
For anyone who is new to this (or under 30), ten years ago the idea of huge Palestinian solidarity encampments spreading over more than 100 US college campuses would have been entirely outside the range of political possibility.
Israeli propaganda can afford to be preposterous because racist dehumanization has already done the real work for them. If you accept that Palestinians are irrational and violent (“human animals”) and that Hamas is uniquely barbaric then even the flimsiest lies will do. 1/
The author of this article worked for the NSO Group, the Israeli cyber-weaponry firm that sold Pegasus spyware. The editor of this magazine grew up on Long Island but volunteered for the Israeli military during the First Intifada. Do tell us more about what will help our cause.
All Israeli allegations, no matter how absurd, are taken as true until proven false (generally weeks later). All Palestinian allegations, no matter how credible and diversely sourced, are ignored until they can be thoroughly investigated (generally never).
When western journalists say they can’t cover certain stories of Israeli military violence because they’re not in Gaza, it’s a racist dismissiveness of Palestinian journalists documenting war crimes and releasing the evidence. Meanwhile they repeat unverified Israeli allegations.
I was brought up believing that being a Jew meant that you fight genocide, racism, and McCarthyism till your dying breath so I’m feeling a little confused about where some of you are coming from.
Thanks for all the kind words. I’m overwhelmed not only by the loss but by all the love for her. I’m sorry I can’t respond to all your messages, wish that she could see them.
The Israeli military just told 100,000 people in Rafah to evacuate so they can begin to flatten their homes, which you must agree is a highly nuanced situation.
Remember when the US wanted to overthrow the Israeli government for not letting desperately needed humanitarian relief into Gaza and firing tear gas and live bullets at protesters? Weird. Me neither.
I just heard from a trusted friend in Umm al-Kheir in the South Hebron Hills that the village was raided early this morning by Israeli soldiers, who terrorized people for hours, lining them up facing a wall, beating them, humiliating them, threatening them at gun point. 1/
The UN is extremely cautious about declaring famine. Places where lots of people are dying of hunger are routinely characterized as “on the brink” of famine for ages. So when they say w/out hesitation that “there is famine, full-blown famine” in Gaza, it means it’s very, very bad
Is anyone really delusional or ignorant enough to imagine that this kind of carnage will not reverberate for generations, that these ghosts will not haunt their grandchildren?
I have been at Palestinian protest encampments in the West Bank that were attacked by settler mobs as soldiers watched (and then joined in) so what’s happening at UCLA is all kinda familiar.
It’s hard to think of a harsher indictment of US media than the fact that literally tens of thousands of journalists have been laid off in recent years and Bret Stephens still has a job.
If you consistently give them the locations of humanitarian sites and they then consistently bomb them, can your really pretend that you are trying to “prevent “anything?
Bombing an actual embassy now. None of the countries the US has smugly labeled rogue states have ever been so unhinged, reckless, contemptuous of law. And yet
So I’m in Barcelona and on lockdown and want you all to know that for the last two nights the entire city has gone out onto their apartment balconies at the same time to applaud for health care workers and declare their own vitality and solidarity and stubborn joy.
Editors of good conscience: please make a greater than usual effort to publish actual Palestinians right now. Friends in Ramallah are telling me they can’t place pieces in US outlets. If you need help finding writers, DM me and I’ll send contacts.
There is a terrible, queasily familiar, exterminatory colonialist logic to this war: the natives had the temerity to fight back and now a final example must be made of them. Genocidal settler fantasies in action.
US media has decided—and editors do make these decisions very consciously—not to cover the Largest Strike in Human History, 250 million people across India last week.
Last week, the largest organized strike in human history shut down India. 250,000,000 people struck against Indian PM Narendra Modi's neoliberal reforms to the agricultural sector.

The people dismissing Aaron Bushnell as mentally ill aren’t okay with any other form of protest either. Whether you’re disrupting speeches or actually lighting yourself on fire, if you get in the way of this genocide they’ll find ways to dismiss, dehumanize, pathologize you.
2\ More detained kids (yes kids) tagged with numbers like cattle by the IDF. Those released say they have been subjected to horrifying cruel treatment in addition to being stripped down to their underwear at gunpoint in front of cameras.
I just learned that Eid al-Hathalin was arrested by Israeli soldiers today after a violent raid on the village of Umm al-Kheir. Basically all the protagonists of the book I wrote about nonviolent resistance in the West Bank have been arrested since October. 1/
If you’re in any position to speak out and haven’t done so for fear of career consequences or jeopardizing relationships with people you care about please get over it because now is really the fucking time.
It’s obviously not worth the cost being paid in Gaza but this prolonged masks-off peek at the radical moral corruption of basically every institution in US cultural and political life sure is an education.
A limousine accident has higher placement than this article on the New York Times website, so I’m just gonna tweet it again. Massive coastal flooding and serious global food shortages in less than 20 years:
Very cute that Biden’s willing to sanction (four!) individual settlers while continuing to fund, arm, and in every thinkable way support the genocidal state settlement enterprise that spawned them.
A missile launched agst them becomes a missile that they launched, a hospital becomes a terror ward, an ambulance could only be a transporter of terrorists, a basement room clearly used as a shelter from bombs could only have held hostages because only Israelis can be victims 2/
The narrative that brave, noble Israel was somehow hijacked and derailed by extremists is the purest essence of liberal Zionism and also entirely false. For 20 years after the Nakba, Palestinians in Israel lived under strict military law and without civil or political rights.
Israel could be burning Palestinian children on the White House lawn and this administration and its many propagandists would find a way to be okay with it.
Imagine the moral gymnastics necessary to congratulate yourself for convincing one country to open its border to let in a few trucks of supplies while you send bombs and billions of dollars and endless encouragement to the country imposing the siege and slaughtering thousands.
Unfortunately this is effective not only among Israelis but for most of the North American and European media, beyond whose liberal principles lie the same racist structures of thought. They are not being cynical—they believe they are being responsible. (Most of them anyway.) 3/
One of two doctors killed yesterday. A clinic was bombed. The main road leading to a major hospital was hit, killing 23 and rendering the street impassable. A third of the dead have been children. What exactly do they mean by “complete quiet”?
Our deep condolences for the tragic death of one of the few Neurologists in
#GazaStrip
, the Palestinian Dr. Moeen Alalool with his five children, as a result of the
#Israeli
bombing of his house in Wahda street in

city

The last time a US president was dumb enough to talk about “pure, unadulterated evil,” he started a 22-year-and-counting war that has killed hundreds of thousands and left entire countries in ruins.
They searched people’s phones, trashed the community center, forced one man to record a video praising Israel. Before leaving, the soldiers told them that if they weren’t flying an Israeli flag by evening they would come back and kill everyone in the village. 2/
There is no question that the US should cut off all aid to Israel immediately. The fact that this is a controversial position speaks only to the fundamental obscenity of our politics.
"When a 3-year-old girl is killed, it’s because someone in the army decided it wasn’t a big deal for her to be killed. These are not random rockets. Everything is intentional. We know exactly how much collateral damage there is in every home.”
Apparently starvation is too slow: Israeli soldiers massacring Palestinian civilians waiting for food aid has become a regular occurrence, barely news.
Many of us have devoted years to fighting to shift US media discourse on Palestine. Until this week I thought we had achieved something, but they brushed it all away like so mush ash.
Major news orgs describing a sickening massacre as a “chaotic scene” (NYT), a chaotic incident” (CNN) or as “food aid-related deaths” (WTF
@guardian
?) is not just the usual cowardice and mealy-mouthed ass-covering. It is malice. It is a crime against the living and the dead.
Such a repugnant, cynical farce. The airdrop is Biden’s response to the Michigan primary, not to the thousands of starving Palestinians whose murder he continues to support.
If the word “terrorism” has any meaning at all I would think that bombing a densely populated civilian population solely and explicitly in order to “strike terror” would be it.
In Susiya, the night before, it was settlers who came and told villagers they 24 hours to abandon their homes. In Umm al-Kheir it was uniformed soldiers. 3/
PG&E is doing a great job of priming northern California for a long overdue conversation about a public takeover of utilities. Given the fires and the climate crisis, private ownership of vital services is too expensive, too inefficient, too dangerous.
Yesterday one of the smartest, bravest, coolest kids I know was shot three times in the legs by Israeli soldiers. He's 15. He's going to be okay, but in case this wasn't already clear: supporting the occupation means accepting the systematic murder and mutilation of children.
How many Palestinian lives are worth one Israeli life? Producers and editors of major networks and newspapers: Think hard. Can you live with the decisions you make this week? This is how genocides get made.
Fellow journalists, if your notion of objectivity does not allow you to condemn the murder of so many journalists (102 since October) you might want to think about what it is allowing others to do.
.
@AOC
is one the most talented, inspiring, and courageous politicians I’ve ever encountered in the US, which makes her shifting stance on Palestine all the more profoundly disappointing.
“Doctors and witnesses said Israeli forces bulldozed tents housing displaced Palestinians near the hospital and crushed them to death. … ‘People were buried alive using bulldozers. Who could do that?’”
Shame on the Max Planck Society, shame on the Barbican, shame on PEN America, shame on all the many, many institutions of *high culture* and *higher learning* that only know how to kiss up to power, even when it means complicity with genocide. The world is watching.
New: Reporters at the LA Times who signed an open letter criticizing Israel have been told that they cannot write about the Israel/Gaza conflict for three months
It is all just endlessly crushing. The loss and also the complicity. The brazenness. I took this photo at a demo yesterday. It’s a list of the names of Gaza’s dead. It had not been updated since late October.
Wondering when all the pundits worried about Palestinian violence in the wake of trump's Jerusalem announcement will notice that all of the killing is being done by Israeli troops. Four more dead today, dozens injured.
Just spoke to a friend in Nabi Saleh, who says that no one has been able to contact Bassem or Ahed Tamimi since their arrests or to find out where they are being held. “Even the lawyers don’t know.”
“I see the dead walk, I see the living die. I see a city being erased from the world’s memory. I see it all and still, even after 84 days of it, I don’t believe any of it is happening. It must all be a nightmare, I think to myself, in the dream. It must all be a nightmare.”
After 84 days under siege and assault, Palestinian writer Atef Abu Saif made it out of Gaza with his son. He left behind scores of family and friends. This is what he wrote about his last day in Gaza and his first day away.
Another reason that the political establishments of rich countries are so keen to quash dissent. They see extermination as a solution, and as their right. Israel is providing a model for how to deal with troublesome surplus populations. What happens in Gaza will not stay in Gaza.
This war is not about Hamas and not limited to Gaza or even to the last four months. It has been ongoing for 75 years. Its goal is the same as it always has been: the crushing of souls and the destruction of all Palestinian hopes. 4/
Announcing the names of the third batch of the prisoner exchange achieved by the Palestinian Resistance. 39 child prisoners will be released this evening, Sunday, 26 November 2023. Their names are:
I shouldn’t have to say this again but this thing about the left being anti-Semitic for criticizing Israeli apartheid while rightwingers massacre actual Jews in synagogues is so viciously and cynically dumb that it makes my actual brain hurt.
Here we go: Walmart evicting wildfire refugees from parking lot, shelters infected with norovirus, FEMA reassures: “our heart goes out to them.” President meanwhile continues to blame fires on trees.
If you think that, for instance, Israel bombing the Iranian consulate in Damascus is something happening far far away that won’t affect your and your children’s ability to live out your lives in something like peace I have bad news.
This is not an “Israel-Hamas War”: it has so far almost entirely involved enormous violence unleashed by a state against a civilian population—in Gaza and increasingly in the West Bank—united largely by ethnicity. There is a name for that. It’s not war.
🚨Israeli leftest hero & "Peace Icon", General Yair Golan, openly advocates here for starving Gazans to death:
"We should tell them: listen, until they're released, from our side, you will starve to death. This is COMPLETELY LEGITIMATE"
Again, this is a LEFTEST Icon in Israel..
One of the tried and true recipes for revolution is giving people enough education to sharpen their critical faculties but no opportunities for social mobility and then repressing them. Just something to think on. Happy May Day.
What Israel is clearly saying it will do in Rafah would be worse than anything it has done so far. An unconditional ceasefire immediately is the only sane demand.
If your only reaction to this carnage is to say, “What about what Hamas did on Oct 7?” you might want to ask yourself how much of your own soul you have already killed.
GAZA UPDATE: More than 6,600 Palestinian children in Gaza have been killed by Israeli forces since October 7, according to the Governmental Media Office. Thousands more are still missing under the rubble.
The Israeli military just blew up the University of Palestine in Gaza City with 315 mines. All the universities in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed. We need a full academic boycott.
