Maybe AI really is to white-collar workers what photography was painters: less about obsolescence and more liberation. Most pre-photographic painting isn't "creative" and neither is most knowledge work, at least work that's graded on accuracy, precision, efficiency, etc.

Today we're launching the 50Y Progress Index, an open source project to quantify and track humanity's advancements. Food, energy, timber, and steel are 80-90% cheaper today than in late 1800s, air travel is 30X cheaper per mile than in 1950, computing is 10 trillion times

Six fundamental beliefs that bias our view of the world: 1. My experience is a reasonable reference. 2. I make correct assessments of the world. 3. I am good. 4. My group is a reasonable reference. 5. My group is good. 6. People's attributes (not context) shape outcomes.
Psychologists have posited hundreds of cognitive biases over the years. A fascinating new paper argues that they all boil down to one of a handful of fundamental beliefs coupled with confirmation bias. https://t.co/bDDmNfsSie

NEW: America is a rich country. Britain is a poor country with one wealthy region. People love to compare the UK to Mississippi, but itβs far more informative to look at UK subnationally, too. London ranks fairly well, the rest of the country does not π https://t.co/xrIzwYGaCI

π Recently I wrote about different ways to change the world. Starting your own project is the rage, but joining a community is an underrated alternative. ποΈ This story comes from Trawden, the village that broke free, but the lesson matters everywhere π https://t.co/gyjSDbK7lt

Had a great conversation with Yoshua Bengio. Both of us agreed that a good step forward for AI risk is to articulate the concrete scenarios where AI can lead to significant harm. More to come, and looking forward to continuing the conversation!

The interplay between technology and culture is underrated. Technology creates a thousand futures, but culture determines which one we take. In response to @ntnsndr, who I like https://t.co/aIQmqOYsk5
