Indeed it's best to think you're talking to a person so you know their mental model and how the can best collaborate with you, than treat is as machine and you keep hammering the same things and it just won't go.

Also very useful is having a “theory of mind” for the AI model you work with. With experience, you can learn what sort of instructions confuse them, what they are going to “intuitively” grasp, and how to start an interaction in a useful way. This skill overlaps with teaching.

Cursor used to be amazing. Now it's too aggressive with jumping into coding and ignores context. Windsurf just works better - shows what it's reading, follows instructions, and doesn't go off the rails. First AB test of Cursor and Windsurf in a real-world application.
