Semiconductors are an Oregon economic pillar but dominated by 1 firm usually in good way. In very small sample size, laid off industry workers nationwide more likely to move. Given fewer local firms, out migration, while rare, may be more likely & would hurt entire local cluster

It’s Father’s Day, 👧🏼 just turned 12 & I found game log data. @TimbersFC zero hat tricks is even less probable than I realized at 0.000167%! #RCTID should have 13 at league average rate. Even given lower brace rate should have 6-7 cc @ChrisRifer @JakeZivin @StumptownFooty

We are now at a 0.04% probability that the Timbers do not have a hat trick in MLS! 483 matches! #RCTID.

With Joao Klauss's hat trick today for @stlCITYsc, @TimbersFC are now 1 of just 2 @MLS teams without a hat trick in regular season play. The other is expansion team @SanDiegoFC, who have played just 17 games. The Timbers have played 483! Just an incredible statistical anomaly.

Interesting new research on the “trailing spouse” issues families face. Big challenge for desirable, smaller communities that have anchor employer/industry with small(ish) number of high-paying jobs. Hood River and Newport good examples in Oregon.

Would’ve been nice to have this ready to help now. Coos could have taken the bigger ships, Newport/astoria some smaller vessels etc. PDX for the large, not supersized ones.

On April 17th the U.S. Trade Representative's office is expected to impose fees of up to $1.5M per port call for ships made in China and for $500k to $1M if the ocean carrier owns a single ship made in China or even has one on order from a Chinese shipyard. 🧵 1/.

And combine with this, and it’s not great bob. Neither of these are Oregon-caused problems, but any regional economy would suffer if two major pillars falter.

Yikes. It’s all speculation right now. But if the R&D shrinks that’s a full fledged regional economic problem.

Plus lots of good navel gazing for those who know Bend, and Oregon and the people working on and advocating for housing policy.

Really enjoying Jonathan’s new book on Bend housing that’s really about Oregon/Blue states, land use, affordability. But, as good reporters do, he pairs it with the humanity of the housing crisis, including his own.

Portland domestic migration is back to treading water. Urban neighborhoods still negative, but metro region at 0 over past year, implying some positive quarters. Baseline outlook is still for small, positive gains but will see. I was fooled by the head fake 18 mths ago.
