Thousands of LGBTQ+ veterans who were given dishonorable & bad conduct discharges were supposed to be pardoned — but only four have been. Why? My latest from @TheWarHorseNews, also available at @MotherJones and @19thnews!

"Misrepresentations may have to be made.” How so-called claim sharks take advantage of loopholes to charge vets for benefits they can get for free. Fantastic deep dive #longreads By @leah_rosenbaum @TheWarHorseNews @MotherJones

Veterans Guardian says it’s fighting to give veterans a choice. Critics say they’re guardians of greed.

2/ There are dozens of these companies, but I found that one stands out. It's called Veterans Guardian, and it has spent millions in state and federal lobbying over the past few years trying to legitimate its practice so it can continue working in this $73 billion industry.

1/ For the past seven months I've been investigating the veterans benefits "claims coaching" industry -- an unregulated, illegal industry that charges veterans thousands of dollars to help them file their disability claims with the VA.
Veterans Guardian is fighting laws that would stop unaccredited veterans benefits claims consultants from doing business. They say their company gives veterans a choice. Critics say they’re guardians of greed.

I’ve been reporting on health insurance denials for more than a year. Last fall, I stumbled across a lawsuit that, with interviews, revealed one insurers’ playbook of secret lists, special deals and lowball payments. 👇

This is the incredible type of service journalism we need right now. Tracking government dollars down to cents, and illustrating them with compelling human stories. Incredible work from @aneripattani and the @KFFHealthNews team!
NEW: Database by @KFFHealthNews, @JohnsHopkinsSPH & @ShatterproofHQ tracks 7,000+ ways opioid settlement money has been used, shining light on public health settlements worth $50B: https://t.co/qbllTAA3wC In this 🧵, I’ll share a bit on how we built this & what we found.

4/ So are there toxicology questions worth asking re: fluoride? Maybe, I don’t think asking questions is bad. But if you think the answer is “we can just fix teeth later,” sorry to say that’s not how it’s gonna work out.

3/ Plus, bad dental health leads to a whole bunch of other problems. Funnily enough, your mouth is part of your body. So folks with dental issues can have increased risk of heart disease, lung disease, pregnancy complications, and more. Those aren’t easy to just fix.

2/ Because we’re not just talking about drilling one cavity here. We’re talking extensive dentistry. And about half of all American kids already don’t receive regular dental care, but now they’re gonna be able to get crowns?

1/ First, have you ever met someone with bad teeth? Like really bad teeth? It can ruin their whole life. What they eat, what jobs they apply to, if they laugh, if they smile, if they get bullied, if they date. And it can cost thousands of dollars to fix.

I’m usually a fan of @today_explained but I think their fluoride episode really missed the mark. They ask: if there’s even the tiniest risk fluoride could impact brain development, wouldn’t it be better to just fix kids’ teeth later? Here’s why it’s not so simple 🧵

🚨 Back at the encampment clearing on 23rd and MLK, the operation is running different today. More than a dozen officers are here, including @CHP_HQ This morning, a city worker threatened me with arrest even though there was no heavy machinery operating. https://t.co/WMqKFYJop7

This is one of the reasons the most rapidly growing homeless population is elders. It's a crisis, and it's going to result in more older folks just dying on the streets.
I’ve learned a lot helping my family get my dad into hospice but one of the biggest realizations I’ve had is that our country is facing a geriatric financial time bomb. It is absolutely insane how much elder care costs. For my family if we were to have someone 24/7 it’s $450k a
