It's been a few weeks since the Burnaby Now, Tri-City News and New Westminster Record shuttered. The lack of local reporting is already being felt. https://t.co/erJy16HO8S

A dearth in local reporting is being felt at a municipal level after the recent closure of three outlets.

From its first edition on Nov 21, 1983, to its final online article on Apr 17, 2025 — a quiet farewell to a #Burnaby institution that reflected aspects of the city for over 40 years.

here's a fun one: i interviewed a guy who built a scale model seabus entirely out of lego https://t.co/C3EnIsyAQQ

The most satisfying part is how people react to the creations, and the conversations around transit they can spark, says model artist William Fong

Here’s my cute lil feature on the history of the No. 49 bus from Metrotown to UBC, which celebrates its 50th birthday today! Read about a group of residents who opposed the route half a century ago, declaring the bus service “is not going to be used.” https://t.co/rTsyGyVzQu

Happy 50th birthday, No. 49!

@lauvande I expect the Concord development on part of the Metrotown site will also be an asset, because they'll put some design thought into the ground plane around the towers.

@lauvande Brentwood has done a nice job creating plazas and a very walkable/interesting connection to transit. The Anthem Station Square development, with its creation of the pedestrian-focused Silver Street, is also a pleasant addition.

@lauvande I hate to be gratuitously negative, but it's hard to look at how a lot of the new high-rise development has been planned in Burnaby and not be dismayed. The best ones seem to be where the developer has taken the initiative to do something besides just stick up a tower in a field

"For years that's what several areas of Burnaby felt like, as the city allowed builders to slap up generic concrete towers along Lougheed Highway or near Metrotown, with little at the ground level to make these areas a place any sentient being would want to spend time in."

Ooof - Burnaby roasted here as a "downer" urban experience "where it's obvious that little care was taken to make new building developments human-friendly."
My take on the failings of the Broadway Plan — not comprehensive, don’t get into many tenants likely to be displaced with no compensation because of the rules of the mitigation policy — and how oddly out of synch it is with the principles Vancouver planning has traditionally had
