Eric Sondheimer has been covering high school sports for the Los Angeles Times since 1997 and in Southern California since 1976. City Section HOF 2019.
After 96 years, my father has passed. Carl Sondheimer. He enjoyed life to the very end. Thrived on independence. Escaped the Nazis, served in the Korean War, spent 40 years working in aerospace. He showed how to always get back up when things didn't go as expected. RIP.
Turned 93 today. Escaped Nazi Germany as a child. Lived in Lithuania and China during WWII. Came to America in 1947 at 21. Korean War Veteran. Still going on cruises. Toughest person I know. My father.
Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit died this morning at Santa Anita on the track. Could be sudden death. Siren went off as horses were working out. Horse emergency van went out right past the finish line. Very sad.
True or false: The difference between a high school coach and a private coach is when the pupil makes it to the pros, the private coach claims credit and the high school coach cheers from afar knowing the truth.
Happy 95th birthday. Born in Berlin. Went to Lithuania to escape the Nazis. Spent WWII in Jewish ghetto in Shanghai. Came to America on a ship. Served in Korean War. Worked in aerospace with no college degree. Toughest person I know. My father.
The USC haters can say what they want but Caleb Williams is winning the Heisman Trophy and it won't be close. His performance tonight only added to resume. Fearless. Tough. And damn good.
My patience has run out. I’m a sportswriter from the Los Angeles Times. I have more than 40 years experience covering high school sports. I will give my honest evaluation. If you can’t handle that, go somewhere else. No one is perfect but I always will try my best. Enjoy weekend
Adoree’ Jackson paid for state championship rings for Gardena Serra football team. Robert Woods bought the team Beats. Great to see former players giving back to their schools.
If the Lakers sign Kawhi, it will finally make up for the David Stern debacle of denying the Lakers the chance to get Chris Paul. That started all the problems.
Los Angeles could be soon home to LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook, Kawhi Leonard, Mookie Betts, Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald, Justin Herbert. Who can top that?
Effective April 25, college coaches no longer able to offer freshmen and sophomores. Big change. Players may actually have to prove their worth in high school.
My father is 92 years old today. Just got back from a cruise. Keeps wanting to travel and see the world. Escaped from Germany and made it through WWII as a child. Never gives up.
The unsung heroes in the return to high school sports in California are athletic directors. It’s nonstop trying to schedule games, figure out facility use, enforce protocols. If they get five hours of sleep, that’s a good day.
St. Francis football coach Jim Bonds passed peacefully this morning, his brother, Tom, said in a text. His family was at his side. He was 51. He battled cancer to the very end and was grateful for the prayers and support. RIP.
It's really ridiculous when newspapers lay off the high school sportswriters who provide the most unique, most local coverage for papers seeking to separate themselves. The reason why I have done prep sports for 40 years was to be different and not be bored. I'm still going.
Rams WR Robert Woods, who won a state title with Gardena Serra, bought each player Beats headphones and they were given out going on the bus to Saddleback College today. Once a Cavalier, always a Cavalier.
I want to say thank you to everyone who loves high school sports. It's been my passion for 46 years and a main reason I've continued that long because of the commitment by my employers through the years, The Times and earlier Daily News. Nearly 100,000 Twitter followers.
Oregon has now pulled away three of the best athletes ever out of Southern California over the years. De’Anthony Thomas, Rodrick Pleasant, Kayvon Thibodeaux.
We need to get back to teams shaking hands after high school football games. If players don't have enough discipline to fulfill a simple act of sportsmanship after the heat of battle, then that's a failure on coaches. It's not a good look on everyone.
I don't want to hear complaints from parents upset that their son has to play on the freshman or JV team to start high school. Donovan Dent of Corona Centennial played on the freshman team. Now he's going to be a two-time player of the year in Open Division. Trust the process.
I once thought about coaching. I'm glad I didn't. Too many people to cater to _ parents, kids, boosters, principal, school board. It's a daily gauntlet. Little loyalty. Tough job. I respect a coach's sacrifice and resiliency to keep getting back up after being knocked down.
From Johnny Juzang: “We’re UCLA, man. We’re not a Cinderella program; I think that those days are behind us. We’re restoring the legacy, so much history here, and that’s what we’re here to do.”
Is it safer to play sports outside than be in a classroom? The science says yes. No excuses for not letting high schools resume sports seasons following protocols that work.
To all the private coaches who keep telling their paying customers to transfer because it helps them get recruited, just stop. College recruiters don't care where players play. They care if they have talent, have good grades and are good people.
Prayers out to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame coach Kevin Rooney. Message from the school: "With a heavy heart we would like you to know that Kevin's wife Maureen lost her battle with Leukemia yesterday. Please keep Kevin & his family in your prayers during this difficult time."
The Clippers are trying to have a jersey from every high school basketball team in California. Schools can submit to the team. They will be on display at their new arena. No excuses. PARTICIPATE!
All season, Los Angeles High coach Anthony Jackson has been texting me scores and player stats whether his team wins or loses. They lost 51-0 last night to Crenshaw. He still sent me the final. Somebody taught him it's about the kids, not the final score.
Will there ever be again a first-round NBA draft pick who spent four years at the same high school and spent four years at the same college? Jaime Jaquez Jr. might be the last. From Camarillo High and UCLA.
Asking for every high school athlete who wants to have a season in California: Please avoid Super Bowl parties and wear a mask. It’s a small sacrifice. They’ve waited now 11 months. Enough. Give them a chance. Cases are dropping.
Why does LAUSD need to open its sports facilities soon? Because kids need a place to exercise after six hours of online classes and it's better to have their coaches with them to help with their physical and emotional well being with safety precautions.
Loyalty is disappearing with transfer portal, so UCLA fans should give a standing ovation for having the best sixth man in college basketball in David Singleton. He could have left to start. He stayed and is the last of a generation.
If we have high school sports, I can say unequivocally kids will listen to their coaches better and practice harder than ever before. They miss school. They miss competing. They miss teammates.
I’m not leaving The Times. Myself and others are making a stand to the best of our ability working day and night if required to serve our community. It’s our love, our passion. We need media to tell the stories of our neighbors. That’s what we do. Please support local news.
I'm saying it right now: The steal of the draft was the Raptors taking Christian Koloko in the second round. When you get your shot blocked, you'll start to know the name.
I've known Terry Donahue for 40 years. A man of integrity, relentless energy and bled UCLA blue and gold. He helped mold so many young people and continued after retirement from UCLA. Anyone and everyone is better for having met him. A kind Valley boy from SO Notre Dame. RIP.
There doesn't need to be any more debates. California's best two football teams went to Texas and routed two good Texas 6A teams. Until something else happens, debate over.
There will be a track and field season in California. Football players should take advantage and show someone they are faster, stronger, better. You’re an athlete. A fast 100 time will produce a scholarship offer. Or more importantly you might like track and field and have fun.
Thank you to everybody. Hall of Fame induction usually means you've retired. But I have a long way to go because there's too many inspiring stories left to be told.
It’s official! Randy Rosenbloom & Eric Sondheimer have been inducted into the CIF Los Angeles City Section Hall of Fame. What an honor!!
Thank you to both of you for your contributions to high school sports. You represent the best that the media has to offer!!
#CitySectionPride
I overheard a varsity football player leaving the field on Friday night talking to a teammate: "I wish my parents were here to watch me." Obstacles and challenges everywhere.
UCLA commit Stephan Blaylock of St John Bosco said he received a phone call last night and didn’t recognize the number. “It’s Chip Kelly, man,” the caller said. “I was star struck,” Blaylock said.
One thing high school coaches can do do for athletes right now. Post their complete stats on MaxPreps so recruiters, sportswriters and families can at least see for this season and beyond. If you have them, post them now. Kids can use in contacting college coaches and prove it.
Things to be thankful for: My father is still walking at 94. For some 44 years I’ve had the same job, covering high school sports and gotten to live in Southern California, where the weather is unbeatable. I’ve even survived our occasional earthquakes. We got it good.
Those high school football assistants working with players in violation of school and principal policies should be fired. No excuses. Either follow the rules or get out.
The Oregon hype is just that. Hype. USC and UCLA will be just fine. A degree matters. Living in L.A. matters. Playing in L.A. matters. I'm not buying the hype.
