Today is a special day, because a year ago on April 24, 2023, I started working at
@BaltimoreBanner
. I was drawn to coming back to my home state and writing about the passion and community we find in sports here.
Here's some of what I've been able to do in the last year ...
Good morning, Baltimore.
I had *planned* to make my
@baltimorebanner
debut this morning before Lamar Jackson and the Ravens had their own ideas. Because everybody, including LeBron James, has wondered why I'm moving back to Maryland, here's my answer:
Russell Westbrook said he felt discomfort in his back against Milwaukee, and adds that part of the issue is that he's not accustomed "to sitting down for long stretches".
When SportsCenter said five of the six living presidents issued statements about the death of Hank Aaron — tell you what, was not hard to guess who didn’t
Dwight Howard said his 6-year-old son David has asked him this year, after his mother died, why life is so hard. Having David here in the bubble to watch the WCF has meant a lot.
“I think it will mean the world to him. He’ll never forget this moment and neither will I.”
D’Angelo Russell on playing with LeBron and AD, says he’s excited to see what it’s like playing with guys who draw that gravity.
Adds of his own game after six years away from the Lakers: “I’m a grown man now; I’m not a child. I’m just excited to showcase it.”
Asked if it's weird to play lopsided game against the Warriors, LeBron says it's weirder to watch on TV, not in an actual game.
Then adds: "I played them in the Finals without Kyrie and Kevin. So, no."
A very surreal backstage experience: As LeBron was limping out, Pelicans hero Trey Murphy was waiting with his parents and asked for LeBron for a picture for his mother’s birthday. Trey snapped a pic, LeBron hugged her, and as he got a few steps away she *screamed* with delight.
On his words to Zion, LeBron says he thinks it’s his responsibility to mentor: “Anybody that says, ‘LeBron, why would he do that while he’s playing? He’s showing signs of weakness, he’s buddy-buddy with these guys he’s going against.’ Tell em to kiss my ass. With a smile, too.”
LeBron on Russ: “We all in the foxhole together. There is not one guy who is doing it by themself. There’s not one guy you can blame over another guy. There’s not one guy who gets the praise over another guy. When we lose, we all lose. When we win, we all win.”
Very cool happening here in OKC: The Thunder have brought two survivors of the Tulsa Massacre to the game. They’re both over 100 years old and have never seen a live Thunder game before.
LeBron James on Grant Wahl: "Very fond of Grant, and having that cover shoot, me being a teenager and him covering that, was a pretty cool thing. ... I've always kind of watched from a distance. ... It's a tragic loss. It's unfortunate to lose someone as great as he was."
Darvin Ham said he'll stick with DLo, Malik and Vando in the starting lineup with LeBron and AD: "We’re not gonna go crazy. We’ve already had a plethora of lineups and rotations, so we’re gonna settle in on what we did in this previous game going into the break."
For all the internet sleuths out there who were trying to dissect AD’s body language Tuesday as LeBron broke the record, Davis said he was consumed with losing the game and wasn’t aware that LeBron was about to pass Kareem:
Russell Westbrook said in the locker room that the final play was a shot attempt that was obstructed by Joel Embiid grabbing his right arm. Westbrook showed a handful of reporters a screenshot of the play where Embiid appears to be grabbing him.
Seems like Phil Handy is getting a feel for what Rui Hachimura can do. They’ve done some catch and shoot, some corner threes stepping into the shot, and some post-up work like this. Rui seems to be in a good mood.
Brian Windhorst, taking a deep, deep breath, says on ESPN that league executives have "floated" that the Lakers could try to trade for KD and Kyrie as a package deal if the two are still interested in playing together.
Malik Monk says he was drawn into signing with the Lakers by the franchise and the environment, in part by a desire to learn how to be a pro after being on teams dominated by younger players in Charlotte.
Anthony Davis says he's not putting pressure on himself to be what people *think* he should be, like "some Greek God." Then sits with that a moment, and adds that he doesn't mean Giannis.
After
@LakersReporter
asked LeBron about calling his shot about scoring 40 and whether he was trying to fit it into the team needs, he got this response:
“I’ve been scoring 30 and it hasn’t worked, so … I’m gonna try 40.”
Austin Reaves said Russell Westbrook, who tossed him the game-winning assist, has been one of his staunch supporters since the last preseason game in Sacramento when he went 1 for 8, and Russ told him, “Good job shooting it.” Russ has tried to instill him with confidence.
Anthony Davis had 4 blocks and 9 rebounds, but scored just 8 points on 7 shot attempts against the Raptors' fronting strategy last night.
Today at practice, Davis described why he felt it was good to see the Lakers win leaning on others, and his role in a critical Q4 sequence:
Anthony Davis said he, D'Angelo Russell and LeBron James were drawing up plays on the whiteboard at halftime, envisioning what the basketball will look like when James is healthy against and they're playing as a trio.
Vanessa Bryant says that Kobe played through injury to avoid disappointing his fans. His ethos was summed up as so: "What about the fans who saved up to see me play just once?"
LeBron James has noticed a woman who works for the Grizzlies always wears a pair of his shoes when he comes to Memphis. He saw her tonight again, and did something that made her tear up with emotion as she walked out of the arena:
Kyle Kuzma speaks out on Jacob Blake, who was shot by police in Wisconsin. He calls it “quite frankly disgusting” and sends a message of support to the Blake family.
Anthony Davis: "Everyone in the league knows LeBron is not a dirty guy." Says that the moment he realized he had clocked Stewart, LeBron was trying to apologize and say "my bad." Once Stewart was charging, AD says "I don't know what he was doing, but we wasn't going to allow that
I definitely didn't do this Donovan Mitchell quote justice earlier, but NBA transcription services did. Mitchell got worked up while talking about why he wanted to include his sister, Jordan, in his second dunk:
Asked Anthony Davis about the group with him, LeBron, Russ, Nunn and Jones that we’ve been hearing a lot about. Said AD: “It kind of reminds me of my first year here with JaVale in that lineup, having that lob threat and the rest of the guys playing on the perimeter.”
Marc Gasol is a winning basketball player. Raptors had a 10.1 net rating when he was on the floor last year. Defense had a 98.9 rating when he was on the floor; 106.6 when he was off. Passing improves when he's on the floor. Assist rate is better; turnover rate drops.
Dennis Schroder said he never had COVID-19 and tested negative during his quarantine. He says the NBA "has to do better" and before he's able to elaborate ...
... the Zoom crashes.
Anthony Davis on the Harden trade for Brooklyn: They look good on paper, and we'll see what it looks like when those guys get between the lines and play together.
Early birthday wishes?
"I don't really have birthday wishes. I'm not a birthday wish guy."
Party?
"Yeah, I'm gonna have one of those. That's not a wish. I don't wish to have a party because I gotta pay for it. Shit, I know. I gotta pay for my own damn birthday party."
Denver coach Mike Malone points out that it’s Day 60 in the bubble and he thinks it’s “criminal in nature” for the NBA not to let coaches bring in families. “I say shame on you, NBA. This is crazy. I miss my family.”
The Lakers have a moment for LeBron passing Karl Malone on the all-time scoring list — a two-minute video celebrating his (and some of the Mailman’s) career achievements.
Jimmy Kimmel is the host of today’s affair, and he is already having a lot of difficulty speaking through his emotion, saying he sees Kobe’s and Gianna’s faces and jersey numbers everywhere he goes.
Malik Monk says he's glad Rob Pelinka called him this summer. He loves the role he's gotten on the Lakers: "This is what I've wanted to do my whole career."
Dwight Howard walks by as Jamal Murray is setting up for media availability.
Jamal (in jest): “Not right now, man. Not right now.”
Dwight (in jest): “Ay Joker, what’s your room number?”
Pelinka envisions Kyle Kuzma taking on some of the role at wing after the Lakers traded out Danny Green. Doesn't give a timeline of when the team will make their decision, but says the Lakers are proud of drafting Kuz and that he thinks he'll grow this year.
Dennis Schroder says LeBron's presence on this trip shows his commitment to the organization: "In my career, I see people get hurt and not come on the road trip. ... You see him on the bench, even though he's hurt, means a lot to me."
There was a moment at the end of today’s practice when LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Kyle Kuzma all lined up to see who was taller than who. Could not get a conclusive answer on the record.
This has been reporting from the NBA bubble.
Dwight with a direct address to Russell Westbrook: "I appreciate you, Russ."
Says everyone in L.A. will appreciate Westbrook once he's holding up the trophy.
When
@DanWoikeSports
mentions that LeBron and AD said many times throughout the year, "Let Russ be Russ," Russell Westbrook immediately responds: "Yeah, but that wasn't true. Let's be honest."
LeBron will be one of the last players to wear No. 6, retired for Bill Russell:“It was always a treat seeing him at games, having an opportunity to win championships, see him up on the panel and give me the Bill Russell Award was one of the most delightful moments of my career.”
This was SO loud. In light of the events of this week, honestly it was pretty affecting. Baltimoreans and Marylanders are unapologetically who they are, and we need it this opening day more than most.
LeBron was talking about how much longer he'll want to play: "I'm a winner. And I want to win and give myself a chance to win and still compete for championship. ... Playing basketball at this level just to be playing basketball is not in my DNA. It's not in my DNA anymore."
Marc Gasol said LeBron’s communication at all times is what has stood out so far about practicing alongside him, which has sped up the process of blending in the new players on the Lakers.
Getting whiplash from Malik Monk sitting up here talking about how much the Lakers were behind him this year, his relationship with LeBron and AD and how they let him be himself. Very different vibe than a few minutes ago.
Kendrick Nunn says "it wasn't that hard" to opt for the Lakers over other opportunities elsewhere (that reportedly would have been higher-paying) because he wants to win.
Russell Westbrook on the game-winning pass to Reaves: "It's amazing, especially for him. Austin obviously played at OU, so I've been watching him from a distance for a bit."
Juan Toscano-Anderson on his fit with the Lakers: "I’ll do whatever it takes to win, and when I say whatever, I mean it. I’ll dive over scorer’s tables. I’ll rebound. I’ll do whatever it takes. I think I can find a place on any team ultimately."
