To my fellow homeschool parents,
After the replies I’ve received from school teachers on my tweets the past month and after seeing the absolute contempt and outright hatred they have for homeschooling families, I would never put my child in a public school in a million years.
If you’re upset because homeschool moms are able to teach their kids without having had to jump though all the red tape you had to jump through to be a teacher, homeschool moms being teachers is not the issue.
Your pride is.
There’s more than one way to be a real teacher.
Can we just leave “Mary, Did You Know?” and “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” ALONE for one freaking year and focus on the bigger issues like ridding the world of Elf on a Shelf?
10 works boys should read before graduating high school:
1. The Chronicles of Narnia
2. Where the Red Fern Grows
3. Hatchet
4. Shane
5. The Lord of the Rings
6. Iliad & Odyssey
7. Beowulf
8. The Consolation of Philosophy
9. The Divine Comedy
10. Nicomachean Ethics
I will continue saying that homeschool moms are real teachers because it is a true statement, because the nature of teaching and education are topics worthy of discussion in the public sphere, and because homeschool moms deserve to hear it when so many tear them down.
MJ, out of nowhere, walked in the living room and said, “What if all of Bob Ross’s paintings are of real places, and each one is a location of where he buried a body, and that’s why he’s always saying, ‘happy little accidents’?”and then she walked right back out of the room.
This story was absolutely BONKERS.
Anyone else read it? It's going to take a couple of re-reads for me to understand what is really going on in this thing.
Would love to chat with anyone who has read it before. This was my first Chesterton novel.
If you have young children, the single best thing you can do for their educational and personal development is take away any and all access to digital devices, read to them as much as possible, and let them go play outside anytime they ask.
Start right now.
Left-wing teachers literally admitted they are trying to hide what they are teaching children from those children’s parents, so spare us this bullshit.

You think marriage is gonna be all about the hot sex and the romance, but no, it’s about helping your husband pee into a plastic container after he’s vomited into a bag in the ER at 3:30 in the morning while you’re wearing your pjs and no bra.
A Trader Joe’s employee stocking shelves just knocked a bottle of wine off and it smashed all over the floor. People gasped, and she looked terrified.
So I raised my arm in the air and yelled, “Opa!” as loud as I could.
I realized that my son has never read Where the Red Fern Grows, so I handed him a copy yesterday, telling him, "It's a story about a boy and his two dogs. You'll love it."
He took it with him today.
Reader, I look forward to updating you on developments.
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the Sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else."

But please go on about the Dark Ages.
Today’s darkness will be a little bit shorter than yesterday’s darkness, and the same goes for tomorrow and the next day and the next, so courage, dear heart.
My almost fifteen-year-old son is Facetiming with two girls. So I walked up behind him, hugged him, and gave him super big smooches on the cheek right in front of his video stream.
Because I'm an excellent mother.
@chriscameback
And many write their own curriculum and lesson plan and develop their own courses. I do. You’re painting with a rather arrogant, broad brush.
But you’re definitely right. We are not the same.
@chriscameback
Not all institutional teachers have ed degrees or certifications. Are you also eliminating them from being “real teachers?”
And how did you become an expert? Experience. Doing what you do.
Sure, a lot of homeschoolers use pre-written curr. So do many classroom teachers.
If our main concern is whether a student relates to or connects with a text, we do them a disservice. We read in order to see beyond ourselves and to encounter other perspectives.
Reading widely from across the span of centuries helps us be more human.
How dare we deprive them.
Our children are not pawns.
Tote them through Target because you wanna go to Target. Catechize them because it is meet and right so to do.
But doing so to fight some “culture war” is to dehumanize your children. And they will smell it coming a mile off.
MJ saw a shirt today that said, “Girls support girls,” and now I want to make one that says, “Girls support ideas, and if they’re by girls, then great, but if they’re by guys, then that’s cool, too.”
My children speak Latin to each other, can read and discuss Homer and Virgil with ease, know classical rhetoric, and study formal logic.
My 13-year-old son is studying polynomials at an Algebra II level, and my daughter knows and comprehends more about world history than I do.
Earlier this week, I received a refund for a class MJ is taking this spring. The amount? $424
Joshua had to pay out of pocket for his lab work at the pulmonologist this morning. $294
Then he unexpectedly had to take the car into the shop. $130
God is faithful. To the penny.
My girlfriend’s 15-year-old daughter was declared dead yesterday after a sudden brain bleed from an unknown, hidden condition she’d apparently had since birth. She was on a hiking trip across the country.
Hug your babies. Say “I love you.” Life is a vapor. Don’t waste it.
Don't mistake what I'm saying. Hot sex? Romance? They're GREAT.
But who will be there when you get the cancer diagnosis? When the injury won't heal? When the diagnosis has no end?
This is what marriage offers: full view of your humanity. It says, "I will take care of you."
You think marriage is gonna be all about the hot sex and the romance, but no, it’s about helping your husband pee into a plastic container after he’s vomited into a bag in the ER at 3:30 in the morning while you’re wearing your pjs and no bra.
Once again, a local church is offering a weekday morning women’s Bible study, and once again, they’re reading a book on motherhood instead of studying the ACTUAL BIBLE.
And people wonder why I never want to go to these things.
My son got mugged while walking down the street in London around 4 p.m. today. Broad daylight.
A group of teenagers wearing Covid masks jumped him. Two men pulled up, intervened, and ran the muggers off, then walked him back to his flat.
He's shaken but OK.
Lord, protect him.
I don't know who needs to hear this but if you're running church PowerPoint you should go to the next slide as soon as the congregation starts singing the last word on the current slide
AND EVEN IF none of that were true, the premise that the state is the arbiter of who can and cannot educate their children based on political, religious, and philosophical differences shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature and purpose of both the family and the state.
Gonna be on a plane for a few hours and unable to check Twitter, so it seems like a good time to remind everyone that homeschool moms are real teachers.
We have exciting news that is now social media official: Killian will be attending the Royal Ballet School beginning in September!
We are thrilled for what is next for him and can't wait to see what the future holds for our beautiful boy!
@TJOpp63
Are you serious?!? This is the best sell for marriage!
When you are at your most vulnerable and needy, who is someone who is there to take care of you, who sees your humanity as worthy of care and attention? This is the shit, man. This is the good, worthy life.
If you are teaching Romeo and Juliet so you can talk about gender, class, and race, you are not teaching Romeo and Juliet.
In fact, you are doing violence to the text.
At least be honest about what it is that you are doing.
I fell down the stairs, and Joshua is taking me to the ER. Hoping it’s just a sprained ankle, but it looks pretty horrible.
Appreciate your prayers. Especially for our scared teens who are still at home, worried about their momma.
Boys need messages of responsibility and duty not victimhood and entitlement
Stories of strength and decency not indulgence and gratification
Physical fitness and challenge not social media and online learning
Masculinity defined and encouraged by strong male role models
What to do with your children who are home for the next two weeks:
- Maintain a schedule.
- Have them read classic children’s literature.
- Have them do some kind of writing.
- Have them do some math. Try Khan Academy. It’s free.
- Have them cook or prepare food.
If homeschool moms are not real teachers because they won’t teach their children everything they need to know, then no classroom teachers are real teachers, either.
A kindergarten teacher doesn’t teach 8th grade. And a high school English teacher doesn’t teach chemistry.
For everyone who said we didn’t lockdown hard enough two years ago:
Take a real, good, hard look at what’s happening in China right now. And tell me that you’re OK with that.
That way I know to unfriend you.
You don’t relate to that character? You don’t connect with that story?
GOOD.
Now you have learned about a larger human perspective and experience than your or your era’s own.
Scored some good stuff at the thrift shop today.
Also discovered that most children's picture books are absolute garbage.
"It doesn't matter what they read so long as they're reading."
Um, yes, it does. Children have souls that should be nurtured on Truth, Goodness, & Beauty.
Had a follow-up appointment with the breast surgeon this morning. Ended up getting an unexpected needle aspiration on a cyst, so now I’m on the way to the doughnut shop.
If someone sticks a giant needle in your boob, you automatically get to have doughnuts.
Them’s the rules.
Me: Nope. Baptist.
Him: Really? There’s nothing on their website about being Baptist.
Me: That’s how you know they’re Baptist.
Him: I thought they were non-denominational.
Me: That’s how you know they’re Southern Baptist.
They spend hours a day studying ballet, creating art, and reading for leisure.
They enjoy time with each other, publicly adore their parents, and are kind and gracious in social situations.
But please, tell me how you think I need permission from the state to educate them.
The reason you don’t hear all the answers to, “Well, what have YOU done to help pregnant women?” is that those things are done quietly and not for accolades and applause.
Every damn day, people work behind the scenes to support desperate pregnant women for no public recognition.
A young classmate embarrassingly confessed to me that she had never read Lord of the Rings, and I cannot tell you what a joy it was to look her in the eye and tell her that I had never read it until last summer.
SHE LIT UP.
Never be ashamed of what you haven’t yet read.
My car plunging into a body of water with my children strapped into their car seats—and being unable to free them—is a regular motif in my repertoire of nightmares.
Lord, have mercy.
Updated my plagiarism policy:
"Students caught plagiarizing will receive a zero for the assignment, be hurled right into the sun.... Repeated plagiarism is cause for dismissal from the class and advancement to becoming the president of Harvard. No one wants that."
Rearranged the library again. Added a couple of chairs and a side table. I am really happy with how this turned out. It’s nice to have some seating space in here.
Still have room for bookshelves on this wall, too. Those will happen eventually.
An incomplete list of Shakespeare plays we have covered as homeschoolers:
Romeo and Juliet
Julius Caesar
The Tempest
Twelfth Night
Much Ado about Nothing
The Taming of the Shrew
Hamlet
King Lear
If you're the praying kind, I have a follow-up to my first follow-up at the breast surgeon tomorrow morning, if you don't mind.
It's been a little nerve-wracking to deal with this in the midst of a pandemic, but here we are.
This school year is a great school year to start permanently homeschooling your children.
If I found out an adult was having conversations with my child about sexual pleasure, I’d be contacting the police. This is predatory, grooming behavior and has no place into schools.
Really excited for the house sex ed bill hearing later today. Teaching comprehensive, queer inclusive, pleasure based sex ed was a highlight of my time teaching ✨
Next school year is a great school year to start homeschooling your kids. Need help?
My high school course offerings are up! I offer four semester-based lit classes and a full-year writing seminar. Let me come alongside you to educate your children.

Just as long as we remember parents are not educators, leave that to the professionals. Teachers (not bureaucrats) need our support.
Was reminded today that no matter how much time I spend teaching the pursuit of love, grace, truth, beauty, wisdom, virtue, harmony, and loving your neighbor, some people are never going to see past a nose ring, a few tattoos, and a $13 box of hair dye.
And that is their loss.
These are the books for my spring "Monster Mash" course! We begin Jan. 11.
This class is 18 weeks long and is for grades 9–12.
What is a monster? How can they be defeated? What is man? What happens when man becomes monstrous?
Registration is open!
I have big news: I’m going to grad school this fall!
I’ll be a part of the Templeton Honors College at Eastern University to pursue an MA in Teaching in Classical Education.
I am super excited! 😁😁😁
I feel it’s worth presenting the consideration that the quicker men rush to see themselves as an embodiment of a warrior motif, the easier it is to see women as war prizes.
Got a friend to read Till We Have Faces, and got a guy I know from the pool to read Dante (he’s on a lounge chair now reading Inferno), so my master plan to keep people uneducated is working.
I scheduled an appointment in the morning with the breast surgeon. My routine exam isn’t until August, but I’m experiencing some concerning issues.
I’m more nervous about this than I’ve been for a while, and our current backdrop does not help.
Would appreciate prayers, friends.
My son, who already studies poetics, grammar, logic, literary analysis, Medieval literature, geometry, and Latin, who dances ballet four hours a day (plus rehearsals for competition), has decided to learn French in his free time on Duolingo.
IN HIS FREE TIME.
