It’s my last day at UW — I successfully defended my PhD in October! I’ve had a ton of fun, learned so much in Daniel’s group, and have been surrounded by such great group members. I’m off to Berkeley for a postdoc with @DKBediako and couldn’t be more excited for the next chapter!

Perovskite magneto-heterostructures! Had a lot of fun mapping out the anion exchange chemistry of these ferromagnetic Cr(II) 2D perovskites, with some satisfying SEM images to boot ☺️

Postsynthetic vapor-phase anion exchange in the ferromagnetic two-dimensional (2D) hybrid metal-halide perovskite, PEA2CrCl4 (PEA+ = phenethylammonium), is reported. Anion exchange using vaporous...

Welcome to Seattle #S24MRS! Swing by my talk on Friday to hear about our recent work on ferromagnetic 2D perovskites, and reach out if you want to meet up before then! Looking forward to hearing all the great talks that are scheduled.

Listening to NPR’s wait wait don’t tell me and Brian May is on this week - I’m learning that even rockstars experience imposter syndrome while working on their PhD 😅

F-orbital covalency? You heard that right! Though lanthanide f-orbital covalency is typically considered to be negligible, it turns out that Yb-X bonding is key in dictating the Yb3+ PL energy and lifetime. Check out Thom’s work exploring this in Yb3+:CrX3

The layered 2D van der Waals ferromagnets CrX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) show broad d–d photoluminescence (PL). Here we report preparation, structural characterization, and spectroscopic studies of all three...

My Twitterless coworker Kimo just published this incredible work on Yb3+ doped into ferromagnetic CrI3, showing that the Yb3+ magnetization is pinned to that of CrI3. Beautiful spectroscopy, and I’m thrilled to have been part of the team on this one!

The two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals ferromagnet CrI3 has been doped with the magnetic optical impurity Yb3+ to yield materials that display sharp multiline Yb3+ photoluminescence (PL) controlled...

I’m grateful to the Hyeon group for including us in this collaboration and letting us do some spectroscopy on these really nice materials! I had lots of fun. Great work Woonhyuk & team.

I overheard PhD folk subtly mocking undergraduate students, please don't do this. Don't forget that we all started somewhere. Undergraduates are the future, so treat them like it. Bring them into the conversation, help them feel respected & valued as people & as researchers.
