Generally speaking, when I post advice about something in technology, it's when I believe that someone doing the opposite is perfectly reasonable. Your world is different than mine. Advice that everyone will agree with isn't advice, it's an observation.

Coming to #devopsdays #seattle tomorrow? . A few of us will be giving traditional talks, but the best part is the attendee driven conversations. Suggest a topic, share with and learn from peers! .

There are plenty of recordings of my voice online, so I get to call of my less technical friends and family and let them know I won't be calling them asking for money. I'm not normally an advocate of more laws. But maybe voice cloning services should be liable for damages.

Not that I needed proof that #GenAI is used for fraud. Just had a CC compromised. 3 subscriptions to @ChatGPTapp .1 subscription to @wellsaidlabs for generating fake voices.1 subscription to @elevenlabsio for cloning voices.1 subsciption to @bypass_GPT to hide their work.

If the stores would rather lose the sale than the data, you know there is something very wrong.

How bad do companies want your personal data? Went into a @dsw_us store in Vegas and declined to give them a phone number or email. The person at the register called her manager and said, with me standing there, “there’s a stubborn guy refusing to give me contact info.

Since I rarely tweet and did just a fairly negative thread, something positive (except to @aspleenic who may never speak to me again). Ikea meatballs are pretty damn good.

When a company is losing $US6B on $US1BN revenue on "other bets" while showing $US86B gain in selling ads, it's easy to want to invest in tinfoil hats and assume they are only into home automation to know more about what you're doing in your home.

Luckily they haven't shut down the old Nest web interface (yet). We were able to save a clip from the old camera using the old interface and share that with the police.

The one that's showing? The Nest we bought many years ago, before the Google acquisition. The old web interface for that camera doesn't recognize the new ones at all. It does however allow you to do all the things you'd expect, take clips, zoom, etc.

So, if the police ask if you caught audio of a crime down the street, you can verify that you did using the mobile app, but you can't share it with them (one guess how I know).

The newer cameras pretty much never load in this view. Click on one you can see a live view, and that's it. No reviewing past activity, zoom, nothing. Just a live view. Even on the mobile app, you can only save activity that the cam recognized as an event as it happened.

An example of why mega tech corporations owning everything is bad for #consumers and #privacy. It took years for @googlenest to create a web interface to their cameras after acquiring Nest. It's early access and I understand MVP, but this should never survive real competition.

To be clear, I mean the tool itself, not users. If asked about something it doesn't know, it makes up a confident sounding answer, because that's what it was designed to do. Great tool for experts on a topic to streamline work. Horrible tool for research.

"Accepted" #Marketing practice that annoys customers #543: . Bought something, got the first marketing email not related to my purchase about 5 minutes later. Unsubscribed, and was informed that process will take 10 days. Result: never buying from them again.
