When I worked at the
@TNHouseReps
, almost everyone there knew a woman or an intern who was being sexually harassed by a Representative or had a Rep cross the line with them. However, not one of those women wanted to go to HR to report the member. Why? A 🧵
Speaker Sexton smirks in the well with his finger on the button to cut
@brotherjones_
‘s mic while Rep. Jones was talking about Sexton cutting his mic. Can’t make this stuff up.
Serious question: what is going on in Franklin, TN? How has this town turned into ground zero for Q-Anon followers, Neo-Nazis/white supremacists, and Stepford-adjacent communities? Pls help me understand how we got to the point that a mayoral candidate has nazis as security?
“What they did was told 96 other districts in the state to keep their mouths shut.” That’s so funny, bc I have video showing 1) the House was in recess; and 2) y’all weren’t even trying to speak. Shall I post the video, Rep. Hulsey, since y’all cut it off?
Now, let's think about that. Let's say a Dem staffer was harassed by a Repub member. The Democratic staffer, who was told when she was hired that she worked "at the pleasure of the Speaker," had to report the harassment to the REPUBLICAN SPEAKER'S OFFICE. See the problem there?
Additionally, if the harassed staffer wanted to sue the member for harassment and it her claims were deemed unfounded, SHE HAD TO PAY THE HARASSER'S COURT COSTS AND TREBLE DAMAGES. We referred to this as "Jeremy's Law."
@TNHouseReps
Tennessee is a "right to work" state. At the
@TNHouseReps
, that phrase is especially laughable. When you get hired there, you don't actually work for the office that hired you. For ex., I worked for the
@TNDemocrats
but was told that I worked "at the pleasure of the Speaker."
While the nation only recently became familiar w/the blatant racism rampant in the
#tnleg
bc the expelling of
@Justinjpearson
and
@brotherjones_
, the
@tnhousegop
has a long history of Reps who haven't even bothered trying to hide who they are. A 🧵to bring you up to speed.
What does that mean? It means if the Speaker doesn't like something you said, did, posted, WHATEVER, you could be fired for no cause at all with zero recourse. My own Chair told me there was little he could do to protect me if the Speaker wanted to fire me.
How does this apply to the issue at hand with Rep. Campbell? Simple. After the Jeremy Durham sexual harassment expulsion, HR rules were rewritten. While I was there, we were supposed to report any allegations of sexual harassment to HR OR TO THE SPEAKER'S OFFICE.
As Rep.
@VoteBo
stated, "...the law would have a 'chilling effect' on potentially legitimate suits."
@RepMikeStewart
stated, "It is deliberately designed to silence victims." Mitchell introduced legislation to repeal the measure and it failed. Big surprise, right?
And so here we are again, right back where we started, with Rep. Scotty Campbell being found guilty by the bipartisan House Ethics Comm of sexually harassing two interns. And odds are he won't be expelled, bc as another user noted, he didn't use a bullhorn when he did it. ##
#END
Tuning into the
@TNHouseReps
livestream, the first thing I noticed is how emboldened the
@TNDemocrats
have become over the last few weeks. Members are pushing back and using the House rules to their advantage in a way I’ve never seen before, and I worked there for 6 yrs.
@JoyAnnReid
: Crossville, TN, the area
@CSexton25
represents, was a sundown town and had a mural depicting a lynching on the elementary school wall until 2018.
And how did Speaker Harwell handle the situation? BY BLAMING THE INTERNS. Rather than get her House in order, she prohibited interns from attending receptions/events related to the legislature, and by instructing them not to give their phone
#s
out to the reps they worked for.
As
@AuntB
noted, "Any policy or precautionary measure that curtails the behavior of potential victims and doesn't curtail the behavior of the perpetrators is never going to work." And clearly, it didn't.
In the 50-page AG report that detailed Durham's actions, the AG found that they affected his relationship not only w/lobbyists, but also interns. Several interns came forward, saying they felt “super uncomfortable” & didn’t want to be “that girl” who stood up to a legislator.
"Intern Jane Doe No. 44, after being the object of Rep. Durham’s advances in 2015, stated that she informed legislative staff but didn’t want to file a formal complaint bc she wanted to keep herself out of it. She, too, had hoped for a legislative career.”
If the actual TCAP test is anything like the practice test, may be time for an audit of the questions and answers. Case in point-these are 2 questions from the practice test. Not only are they identical, but I selected the same answer for both and somehow got one wrong. WTF?
@CSexton25
@brotherjones_
And what happens when you turn your mic on? All others are cut off. I can post a video of that too if you’d like. Have it cued up and ready to go.
To all y’all in the press,
@GovBillLee
pulled a fast one on you. Did you really think he’d have enough political capital in his party to pass a red flag law? Really? It’s likely he proposed it knowing the
#tnleg
was planning on recessing the following week. Prove me wrong, Gov.
In anticipation of the "prove it" or "you're lying" crowd, I dug into storage and found the policy put into place by Speaker Harwell post-Jeremy Durham and effective at least through January 2021. See page 3, Item III, Section 1, Reporting (b).
Who is in charge of this account? Seriously? This post is absolutely unprofessional and condescending. I’m surprised it doesn’t have the word “boy” in it.
Y’all just keep showing the world exactly who you are.
And you must probably show up long enough to learn how the House of Rep. works! Merely showing up’s been proven to teach simple civics lessons such as how Private Acts work or how to use your voting mechanism.
Quick tip: throwing a temper-tantrum then leaving when you don’t get
MUST WATCH: This call from
@HansonforMayor
- asking about the pic she posted of "supporters" who say they don't know her - is one of the more unusual phone calls I've ever received.
Franklin, Tennessee, this is one of your candidates for mayor. (Details in story below.)
I am f*cking done. Hear me, TN? I pledge right now to vote for ANY candidate who is for gun law reform-and I will work tirelessly to defeat anyone who stands in the way. Who’s with me?
22 killed, dozens wounded across several locations in Lewiston, Maine.
Video
#2
, taken during recess by whatever member was sitting behind Reps. Hazlewood and Hicks. Does anyone look scared to you? Do you see an insurrection? They basically look bored.
Do you see anyone trying to speak, Rep Hulsey? No. No you don’t. And are you saying that Speaker Sexton has such little power that he couldn’t have cut off debate at any time? Sure that’s what you want to say? Rep. Hulsey, if you’re explaining, you’re losing.
Also, as a postscript: never thought I’d be tweeting out a video posted by TN Firearms, but a Repub representative provides this video to them and it has the receipts. Life comes at you fast.
@CSexton25
"Rushed the well..." 😂 You do know there's video, right? Like, on and other places? The only person trying to make themselves a victim is YOU.
Attorneys: Should some of y’all be present in the House gallery on Thursday during the expulsion proceedings? Asking bc we know they’re willing to cut the live feed at any point in time, we see that last night. It seems like a good idea to have a few there to witness everything.
Meet Nick. He’s a
#CovenantSchool
dad and wants answers. His children were in the school the day of the shooting. More than anything, he wants legislators to DO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL. Y’all give Nick a follow and help magnify his voice, bc he has a lot to say.
Day 38 since my kids came back from school different children. If only this 12 year old was armed. If only my 5 and 10 year olds were armed.
Maybe we talk about why the right to own a gun means supporting others with the unfettered ability to kill others. Time for change
@CSexton25
@brotherjones_
Here’s the video. Please note that Justin is speaking and quoting what Rep. Kumar said to him. Justin’s mic is on. As soon as Speaker Sexton cuts his mic on to chastise Justin and Justin turns to respond to Sexton, we can no longer hear Justin. His mic is off.
For those coming to the Capitol this morning: if you’re going to be in the House gallery, PLEASE observe the rules & remain silent. No cheering, clapping, or booing. The goal is to watch & record the proceedings, & the Speaker is just looking for a reason to clear the gallery.
"You can call boo all you want," Rep. Parkinson (D-Memphis) said, "but let's call it for what it is. You remove money from a city because we removed your god from our grounds."
@JasonZacharyTN
isn’t from Nashville. He doesn’t have children enrolled in the
#CovenantSchool
who hid or were injured or killed on 3/27. He doesn’t support a flag law. He’s a grifter who wants to use this tragedy for his own political gain.
#Shame
Note: I found so many examples that I actually had to sit down this morning to figure out if it made more sense to do it chronologically or by Rep. I decided to go by Rep. Buckle up, y'all. This is ugly.
Has anyone asked this in TN?
“EMC has concluded that concealed handguns on school premises pose a heightened liability risk. Because of this increased risk, we have chosen not to insure schools that allow employees to carry concealed handguns.”
Incredibly powerful words from a
#CovenantSchool
dad calling out the lies spewed by alderman Gabrielle Hanson about the Covenant school shooting. Please listen and share.
WATCH: “I’m joined here tonight by other Covenant parents to ask for the resignation of alderman Gabrielle Hanson.”
The
@CityOfFranklin
alderman’s unsubstantiated gossip about the victims has many saying she needs to step down. Numerous ethics complaints have been filed.
Reminder: Former Speaker of the House Glen Casada attempted to bribe former Rep. John Mark Windle into voting for
@BillLeeTN
’s school voucher bill by suggesting Windle could be be promoted to general in the TN National Guard. Windle turned him down flat.
NEW INFO: Lawyer and former state lawmaker John Mark Windle (
@JMW_TN41
) has signed on to represent
@VoteGloriaJ
in expulsion proceedings before the state House.
Let's start with former Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver. In 2010, Weaver's first year in office, she posted a pic on social media of herself w/her pastor-who was in black face posing as Aunt Jemima. For a caption, Weaver wrote “Aunt Jemima, you is so sweet.”
@DiaryOfABlueDot
Isn’t that abuse of power at a minimum? Seems like a state dept of education using the phrase “woke liberal culture” and threatening to fire anyone who goes against the superintendent must be a civil rights violation or…?
@CivilRights
“Let’s be clear:
@Justinjpearson
dashiki isn’t the issue. Attempts to exert control over young, Black, male lawmakers-who have had the temerity to look different & to be unafraid to raise their voices against the power structure-are the real problem.”
During the past week, I dug through my files and found news reports about former and current
@tnhousegop
members as well as bills and resolutions they’ve introduced that will make you 🤬. Watch this space tomorrow for a long 🧵!
Next up is former Rep. Jerry Sexton. Where do I even begin? I remember Rep. Sexton best for the moment in committee when he waxed poetic about his hometown, Bean Station, which was "settled by the first white settlers in TN and had the first white baby born in the state of TN."
Would someone please explain to me, using Scripture as a basis, how owning a firearm is a God-given right? Warning: I know Hebrew and Greek, so I’m going back to the original Biblical texts to check your references…bc the Bible wasn’t written in English, y’all.
Go.
2 TN REPUBLICANS: “We owe it to the citizens of Tennessee to do something… action has to take place.”
MEMPHIS-area Republican reps
@GillespieVote
&
@RepMarkWhiteTN
back
@GovBillLee
’s special session call, say a stronger ERPO law would save lives.
Fast-forward to 2019 and the heated discussions around removing the Nathan Bedford Forrest bust in the TN Capitol. When protesters called TLW "racist" bc she didn't support the removal, what was her response? "Some of my best friends are black."
He further stated in another committee, "It wasn't against the law to own slaves. And who knows, maybe some of us will be slaves one of these days? Laws change. And what about the people I represent that will be offended if we move this?”
🚨MUST-WATCH: “Maybe some of us will be slaves one of these days— what about the people I represent that will be offended if we move this?”
TN GOP Rep. Jerry Sexton’s WILDLY BIZARRE 🤪defense of keeping the KKK GRAND WIZARD BUST in the Capitol... equating it with Abortion. 🤔
When there was an immediate reaction in the press and among
@TNDemocrats
, Weaver responded, "I'm the least racist of anyone. Some of my greatest friends are black."
Not to be outdone, he made the following comments in opposition to removing the NBF bust from the TN Capitol: "What about the people who want the bust there? There's a lot of people that claim him to be a hero...I can't be a part of that."
Here’s the thing: aside from the blatant lies that have been disproven by the THP, they’re basically inciting violence toward the
#Tennessee3
and supporters. I’m no attorney and don’t pretend to be, but I’d there could be some pretty serious legal issues here.
👂LISTEN: lie-filled robocall thanks Rep Johnny Garrett for expelling the TN 3, calls them “radical activists posing as elected officials” who “led an angry mob of Antifa intending violence”, says “pipe bombs and brass knuckles” were confiscated. Lies.
@EnlightTN
is linked to
“We asked them to listen. We asked for them to work w/us to hear our real-life stories & make it better,” Melissa Alexander on IG. “This election is our turn. The supermajority is dangerous for TN, & we need more moderate candidates in office. Period.”
As the
@Tennessean
noted, Rogers was "apparently describing students' racial demographics as meat." This happened my second year at the legislature (2016), and I remember my jaw dropping when I heard that comment.
@SarahShoop33
Oh, Sarah. I know you just want to hug him and tell him everything will be ok, but how can you after what he’s been through?
This is why we fight to change the laws-so no more babies have to ask this question. 💔
@TheTNHoller
@Justinjpearson
“Leaders in Nashville” is incorrect. I feel safe saying that no elected Nashville leader wants this. She should clarify her statement by saying
@tnhousegop
. This is misleading.
Of course, as we all know, the NAAWP - the National Association for the Advancement of White People - was founded by David Duke after he left the KKK and still exists. Duke admitted that the NAAWP basically had the same beliefs as the KKK.
@RepOgles
You know what shatters our children’s innocence, Andy? A school shooting. There are 3 kids who can’t just “be kids” anymore bc they’re dead, Andy.
Ask any
#CovenantSchool
parent about how their child’s innocence had been shattered. Oh, wait, you won’t meet with them.
#Coward
And who could forget former rep. Sheila Butt (now county mayor), "famous" author of such gems as "Does God Love Michael's Two Daddies?" (spoiler alert: only if they repent) and "Everyday Princess: Daughter of the King." Let's talk about the latter for a moment since it's topical.
18 years ago we had a single shoe bomber who didn’t kill a single human being…We changed protocols & made changes and we “inconvenienced” millions & millions of people, and you were willing to abide that—because the how of murder matters and you know it.
@stevenlefebvre
IIn historic moments like this, you don’t want to be known as the guy who introduced a resolution to expel a young, amazing, Black leader. Also, don’t even pretend that you were forced to do this-I’ve watched you kill so many Dem bills. You’re part of the power structure.
Are y'all tired and completely disgusted yet? I still have so much more to include but have to take a break for a minute to clear my head and get ready for the next wave of tweets. Will be right back.
@TheTNHoller
@brotherjones_
@JRClemmons
@CSexton25
Fun fact: members live-streaming or videoing from the House floor during House proceedings is against decorum as well. If they won’t oust Rep. Lafferty for battery, how about for breaching decorum?
Former rep. Courtney Rogers, discussing a bill she co-sponsored to defund UT's diversity office, waxed poetic about "diversity offices that are recruiting the best, from light meat to dark meat, across the entire spectrum."
This is, of course, the same rep who posted on social media that "it is time for a Council on Christian Relations and an NAAWP in the Country." Butt initially stated she exactly what NAAWP was, then later backtracked and claimed she meant "Western Peoples." (see above citation)
It bears repeating: there is NO WAY
@CSexton25
would have let
@brotherjones_
speak this long on racism in the south were the nation not watching. This is unprecedented! His mic would have been cut off after the first sentence.
Here's a passage from that book: "Will dating someone of another race be helpful or beneficial? Understanding that you will eventually marry someone that you date, will you be just as happy for your children to grow up biracial? I have seen instances...
Now that I’ve got your attention, I’m going to say something that needs to be said and stated plainly. I remember the events I tweeted abt bc I worked there, but everything I cited was already posted in news outlets& blogs across the state. If I can do this, why can’t the
@tndp
?
The same Tennessean article notes that Former Repub. Rep. Micah Van Huss called the Confederate battle flag a “symbol of freedom” days after a counterprotester was killed at the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Is westhaven the inflection point? I’m curious but also more than concerned after being at the forum last night. None of that should be considered “normal.”
@JuddLegum
is spot on-the only person specifically protected by Sexton’s policy is the Rep who is doing the harassment. Btwn Sexton & the Office of Legislative Affairs (so ironically named), they’re silencing the intern, the ethics comm, and pretending they don’t know anything.
WATCH: “IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE. Sexton is the speaker. He’s in charge of💰that gets spent.”
@JuddLegum
tells
@TnCoNews1
what we’ve said — Sexton claiming ignorance on Campbell’s intern harassment and blaming the ethics subcommittee is nonsensical.
And just like that, the
@TNHouseReps
, led by
@CSexton25
, adjourns without doing one damn thing about gun control. Don't let the door hit ya' where the good Lord split ya' while you're slinking out of town. Oh, and btw - we'll still be watching. DMs open!
@TheTNHoller
@brotherjones_
This is what real love of neighbor looks like. It's not an empty phrase that's said at a campaign event or on the TN House floor - it's taking the time to meet strangers and see the face of God in them. Crying tears of joy.
...and INSERTED PART OF HIS ORIGINAL RESOLUTION HONORING NBF into the new resolution! It was buried in a HUGE consent calendar toward the end of session and passed unanimously. Note: consent calendars are supposed to be used for non-controversial bills and resolutions.
So let me get this straight: a special session on “Public Safety” that resulted from the
#CovenantSchool
shooting is being held…AFTER SCHOOL STARTS AND KIDS ARE BACK IN CLASSROOMS?
Tell us how little you care and how performative this is without actually telling us.
🚨UPDATE:
@GovBillLee
has announced a special session on “Public Safety” will begin August 21st
The time to contact your reps to ask for (immensely popular) common sense Gun safety laws is now
...and we're back. While discussing Dem. Rep. Joe Towns' bill to outlaw chain gangs, former Repub. Rep. and State Government committee chair commented that he didn't understand why chain gangs were dehumanizing before killing the bill. Watch.
