Our results highlight the diversity in visuomotor strategies of teleost fish, controlled by shared neural circuit motifs, and establish a framework for further investigation into the mechanisms driving continuous and discrete visually guided locomotion. 🧠.

Using simultaneous 2P imaging and tail tracking, we find that ZF and DC share similar visuomotor neural architecture, recruiting pretectal and hindbrain regions. Both species demonstrate lateralized encoding of turns, particularly in medial hindbrain neurons.

Larval Danionella (DC) performs the optomotor response, following the direction of perceived optic flow at faster speeds than zebrafish (ZF) w/ freely swimming behavior assays. DC makes smooth continuous swims, interspersed with sharp directional turns.
