The start of a new adventure. Can’t pretend there isn’t much to do, but I’m excited and want to make The Electric the go to place in Birmingham for film lovers. Be gentle with this southern softie.

Grey morning In Birmingham. Lots to do today, not least the struggle to bring the heating and the projectors back to life
@ElectricBham
We are trying our hardest to get open, honest.
Today an 88-year lease on 47 Station Street, Birmingham comes to an end. It’s a chance to reflect on the remarkable life of this resilient little picture house behind New St Station, arguably the oldest cinema in the UK. What might its next chapter might look like? 1/21
Rather overwhelmed by the obvious love for The Electric. Hopefully I can do it proud. Thanks for all the messages, will try and get round to everyone at some point. My first morning waking up in Brum, are they all like this?
What kind of film list is this?
The Apartment
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Taxi Driver
Magnolia
It's the current list of films on 35mm we are going to show
@ElectricBham
in early 2022. Your'e welcome.
Big lamp house upgrade for the upcoming 35mm screenings
@ElectricBham
Lovely bright SuperLumex. The Apartment is sold out for Sunday, but tickets left for Wednesday.
Made up a 35mm print for the first time in about 10 years. Felt so familiar. All ready for the sold out screening on Sunday
@ElectricBham
#theapartment
You have to grudgingly admire the history on show today, the history of the very rich getting the very poor to pay for their absurd self aggrandisement.
Massive improvement in the picture in screen two
@ElectricBham
now we have replaced the old worn out projector we inherited. Lovely crisp sharp laser images.
Wishing all my fellow cinema bods a happy and successful Bond day. We have all waited a long time for this. Revel in the full screenings and enjoy the unique buzz that running a busy cinema with happy punters gives us. It’s good to be back.
#NoTimeToDie
And now to prep this glorious 35mm print for Sunday 26th. Sold out 2001: a space odyssey. We will add some more screenings to the website this week.
@ElectricBham
I’ll be your projectionist for today’s sold out 35mm screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
@ElectricBham
Nice print too. It’s one of the batch made in 2001, with pillar boxing to preserve the 70mm ratio. This film has been my obsession since I was 8 years old in 1970.
Reading
@empiremagazine
on cinemas greatest moments has overwhelmed me. Cinemas are the greatest and I want mine open again, it’s been my life. Tears may be flowing ever so slightly.
Hey lucky Brummies, I have just booked Jane Campion's spectacular, must be seen on the big screen, Power of the Dog on 35mm for
@ElectricBham
5th & 6th of March. Tickets on sale very soon.
@Peston
I own an independent cinema that has been a lifetime's work with staff who rely on me and a community who value us. By not taking a clear position and trying to dodge responsibility, Boris just threw us to the wolves.
No Time to Die has just gone past Skyfall
@PictureHouseUck
and Skyfall was our third biggest film of all time. Incredible after all that has gone before. So grateful.
#notimetodie
And you know it's not just cinemas the the studios have let down, there is a whole ecosystem of suppliers, sweets and drinks and speakers and projectors and all sorts. Not to mention the benefit a cinema brings to the local economy, especially in smaller towns.
Twats. Utter mealy mouthed responsibility dodging twats. Make cinema closures mandatory at least, that way I can make proper claims to banks and Govt for help. This leaves us totally high and dry.
We can’t we have nice things? Like BBC 4 and CBBC? Things that add to the culture and well being of the nation. Why can we only have Love Island, makeover shows and Celebrity Shit in a Bucket Challenge? Can’t we have both?
What happens when the second biggest city in the country can’t supply a fast internet connection and I book loads of interesting films. The leaning tower of hard drives.
@ElectricBham
Worked really hard on the 35mm install
@ElectricBham
and it’s really paid off. Running a Dark Knight test this afternoon, the youngsters on the team were “is that 35mm!?” They couldn’t believe film could look that good. See it for yourself this Sunday afternoon.
F.A.B Night
@ElectricBham
with Gerry Anderson: A Life Uncharted followed by a lovely chat with director Benjamin Field and
@ImJamieAnderson
, hosted by the brilliant John Culshaw. Such a moving and honest film.
The Covid got me. I have sooo much to do this coming week
@ElectricBham
and I shall be at home instead feeling so very sorry for myself. Pray for Mojo.
@TristanBeer
I’m a marinated in cinema, been in it my whole life exhibitor. Owner of
@PictureHouseUck
and recent diarist on the sadly now defunct radio 4 film programme. I will do my absolute best.
Now making up next Sunday’s 35mm print of The Shining. It’s in amazing condition. I first made this up when it came out brand new in 1980. This print is later as it has a reverse analogue, DTS, DD and SDDS track! Full house. Sound wise. And it’s stereo, not mono.
@ElectricBham
All shows for Barbie and Oppenheimer sold out all day today.
@ElectricBham
and
@PictureHouseUck
Cinemas are the places to be this weekend and forever. There’s not a chance anyone is having as much fun in front of a “streaming platform” right now. X
Farewell then The Film Programme. It’s been a real privilege to be a small part of the journey. I shall miss you Antonia,
@FrancineFilm
and
@stephenhuws
. Top team. Sad face. X
When we come out of this cinema running nightmare I insist that the other sectors of the industry give event cinema it's due for being the one consistent thing that was there for us and treat it with increased respect.
An absolutely stonking last seven days in the cinema and the restaurant. Reports of the death of cinema have been greatly exaggerated. It would have been even more stonking without the 50% capacity cap.
@guardianfilm
The magic of light through celluloid
@ElectricBham
. That beam of light, that particle that acts like a wave, is everything. There's no life without light and the shadows reflect our lives, making us laugh, cry and see our human condition. Viva la cinema!

The big
@GerryAndersonTV
weekend is upon us
@ElectricBham
. Been putting the 35mm print of Thunderbirds at Go! together for Saturday. It’s certainly been round the block a few times. In glorious mono.
Last diary entry from the front line on The Film Programme today
@BBCRadio4
. I shall miss this show so much. Properly intelligent discourse and a true love of film for it's own sake.
This next four days will finally prove that the media obsession with gleefully foretelling the demise of cinema has been greatly exaggerated.
#NoTimeToDie
Gutted for my cinema friends in London. You can go and lick someones face in a nail bar, but not go to the cinema. Which is pretty much the safest place you can go.
Tenet reviews mixed. Some good, some not. My feeling is that just this once, it's not about you, critics. It's about us and we need your help, not your studied sniffy indifference.
So a film I am prevented from playing in my cinema wins the BAFTA for best film? Is this not a stupid state of affairs? Poor show all round. Need to nip this shit in the bud.
#EEBAFTAs
Rather good 35mm print of
@DAVID_LYNCH
‘s Blue Velvet for this Sunday
@ElectricBham
. Almost sold out so get in quick. I will personally be showing you the film. You lucky people.
When I was a kid my dad would hand print the monthly programme on a fascinating hand cranked device that required him to arrange the metal letters in a block and ink the large circular gizmo on top. I was always enthralled watching him. Here is one from May 1967. (Front & Back)
Inception tomorrow and Monday on the wonder of 35mm
@ElectricBham
. Nice clean print. I shall be your projectionist, come and say hi! Also have some mind bending Sci-Fi. Seats still available.
THE LOUNGE launches with screenings of Skyfall.
We look forward to seeing our lucky competition winners. Don't forget masks. You don't need to wear a mask if eating or drinking so enjoy something from our Lounge Menu.
