Remember: every guilty plea, every decision not to fight a case by any Hong Kong pro-democracy campaigner is NOT a real admission of guilt, but more a “what’s the point, let’s get it over with” thing.

They are determined to keep finding more “crimes” allegedly committed by Joshua Wong to have him locked up forever.

Very grateful to @wang_maya and @hrw for highlighting this - China’s vicious crackdown on Macao often gets forgotten when the world’s focus is on neighbouring Hong Kong. People like Au in Macao need international support too.

I am grateful to @SenatorWong for this. Not all transnational repression are this brazen - they can be quite subtle or even take on airs of due process. I hope the Australian Government will act against all forms of transnational repression.

I appreciate that this is considered big by Australian standards. But let’s have some perspective and not call it “monumental”? This sort of crowd size (relative to population) for a politically heated issue would be considered modest at best across East Asia or parts of Europe.

Just as well the protest was allowed. If it was banned, people would think this is only about Palestine, for which there is (rightly) much sympathy in the community. Allowing it to proceed enables people to see certain sections of protesters for who they really are.

Opinion polls have consistently shown that the “majority” of Australians view this issue with more nuance than is suggested by Mr Mashni (namely people tend to blame both Israel and Hamas, don’t like the more strident elements of pro-Palestine messages and appalled by the rise of.

It is important that these freedoms be upheld even if you don’t like the cause or the antics of its supporters. What can be done to those that you don’t like now can be done to you in the future if those you don’t like come to power one day.

Australian law enforcement have not told me or @tedhuichifung to self-censor. Far from it. They have always emphasised our rights to free expression. That’s why I told the Guardian that my treatment in Australia has been very different to that which Carmen Lau faced in the UK.
