Why parking & charging will become the limiting factor to bringing autonomous driving to the masses

A human-driven fleet just needs a convenient parking lot to store off-duty cars. AVs also need:. ⚡️ DC fast charging: AVs are often also EVs. 🛜 High-speed internet: for uploading driving logs. These make it incredibly hard to find suitable real estate, especially in cities.

I've become a bit obsessed with @Waymo depots in the last few months. The reason? I believe one of the most important open problems in autonomous driving is real estate acquisition. ⬇️

Aftermarket car keys modifications for vehicles are not worth it at all. From @kevinchen's video, we can see that even Waymo hasn't figured it out.

Because Tesla FSD log upload process is lossy/biased (Wi-Fi only, best effort) and Tesla does not run counterfactual simulation on-device, it is possible that even Tesla doesn't have a high-confidence estimate of their own critical disengagement rate.

Tesla likely simulates some portion of FSD takeover logs that get uploaded when the driver connects to Wi-Fi. This is a lossy process that can introduce biases. To invent an example, apartment dwellers who park away from Wi-Fi may tend to drive in challenging urban environments.

Typically this is resolved through replay simulation where we simulate what the car would have done. For example: if the simulated AV starts braking 100 ms after the human, avoiding a collision, that's not a critical. I wrote more about simulation here:

Probably the best analysis we (the public) can do without Tesla's internal data. That said, self-reporting almost certainly overstates the critical disengagement rate. Drivers tend to overrate disengagement severity—they can't see how the car would've driven without a takeover.

one of my dumber posts but if you can look past the issues with self-reported data, and look past silly exponential extrapolations 3-6 years into the future, you get a very rough estimate that FSD reaches 10k miles / critical disengagement in the 2028-2030 range.
