Bzzt! Wrong! Demand decreased because administrators wrested control from faculty and directed the university away from its historic function of research and pedagogy and toward financial growth.
RE the latest round of debate RE the struggles of white male PhDs to get tenure-track jobs, I will say again: I went thru this 25 years ago. The core prob then & now: Overproduction of PhDs. 250 apply for each job, top 50 are all excellent, 49 great candidates will lose out.

had a moment washing dishes where i believed maybe for the first time ever that so long as i’m alive, i get to try again and do it differently, and it made me genuinely weep. then i picked up my phone and hopped between instagram and tiktok for 2 hours

City governments should pay for sidewalk clearing. It is insane that clearing streets for 3-ton cars is done at public expense and infrastructure for people on foot is dependent on strong backs and good will.
maybe this isn’t something you think about in the sun belt where there’s little ice & everyone drives everywhere, but here in chicago we walk a lot. when the sidewalk is covered with ice, people can slip and fall and become seriously injured. keeping it clear is for public safety
