Out today in Visual Cognition - lots of cool articles on the theme of handling visual distraction! Ours (w/ Zi Yang and @serences) uses "surprise trials" to show that visual capture is ~10x larger the first time we encounter a distractor https://t.co/3fsd49Z3XC

When does modular structure emerge in neural networks? What are the consequences of this structure for learning and behavior? New work with @StefanoFusi2 answers these questions and more: https://t.co/IyEZoSR7Gb see 🧵below (1/11)

The brain has large-scale modular structure in the form of brain regions, which are thought to arise from constraints on connectivity and the physical geometry of the cortical sheet. In contrast,...

We are delighted to share that our new paper published today in @NeuroCellPress! We show that the persistent activity of single neurons during working memory (WM) maintenance predicts long-term memory (LTM) formation in the human hippocampus. 👇 https://t.co/J0zZ4wfcWC

Daume et al. show that in the human hippocampus, working memory activity of memoranda-selective neurons predicts successful long-term memory (LTM). LTM retrieval, in turn, activates memory-selective...

Next, we compared color and a much more cortically disparate visual feature: the coherence level of RDKs. Again, color almost perfectly generalized to the motion condition. Training and testing on motion had higher decodability, we think due to motion-specific signals.
