it’s happening! My book, Fair Play: How Sports Shape the Gender Debates is out TODAY! Get a copy, tell a friend, tell 10. I’m so excited this is out in the world and really proud to share it with all of you.
It’s hard to imagine a world where the action taken by NBA players today happens without the continuous actions taken by WNBA players as well. As a collective, the NBPA and WNBPA continue to raise the bar for the shape athlete activism can take.
Whew there are some people out there who really hate Megan Rapinoe. I will never understand why folks get so pressed over someone whom they will likely never meet and who has no bearing on their lives or livelihoods.
Literally just panicked that I left my headphones on the train. Rifled through my bag; looked in the trash; stared longlily at the train as it left me on the platform. They are on my head and I am listening to a podcast
“An active superstar will come out as gay”
Good to know that *checks notes* Brittney Griner, Amanda Nunes, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Elena Dells Donne, Abby Wambach, and Megan freaking Rapinoe don’t count.
Injuries happen in sports, but Breanna Stewart's happening one month before the WNBA season starts because she's playing overseas for a team that definitely pays her more is a bitter pill to swallow. She -- along with a handful of young stars -- are the future of the W. Pay them.
I need a wubble reality show immediately. Diana Taurasi is meeting people in lobbies and Sue Bird is staring people down in lunch lines. Gimme all that content.
What Maya Moore has accomplished is nothing short of extraordinary. I went behind the scenes, shadowing her through multiple hearings in Jefferson City to discover what drives her quest for justice.
News from Jefferson City today. Jonathan Irons has had his conviction vacated by Judge Green this morning. Irons was convicted if burglary and assault in 1998. WNBA player Maya Moore is a family friend and has been advocating for his release alongside her family.
Aly Raisman is speaking out about her experience being abused by Nassar. And she has some words for those who would dare to question why gymnasts didn't speak up en mass earlier. Really powerful.
What I find to be most upsetting about the accommodations for players in the
#ncaaw
tournament vs. the men’s tournament is that the apparent assumption of organizers was that the players and coaching staffs simply wouldn’t say anything publicly about the inequality.
To write a story about a lack of gay athletes and not grapple with gender at all is unconscionable. I can’t believe this story exists in the year 2020. Say it with me: Megan Rapinoe, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Jonquel Jones, etc.
Decades after David Kopay and Ian Roberts came out, both men are united in their disappointment that a higher proportion of gay athletes haven’t come out publicly, and that homophobic language in sports is still a sad reality.
I'm proud to write for
@espnW
. We do great work amplifying the stories of women in sports, providing a different lens on men's sports, and continue to push for equality in coverage and storytelling. Let's stop peddling the idea that specialized coverage is lesser coverage.
When we talk about athlete activists, Maya Moore deserves to be in the pantheon right next to Ali. I hope everyone will be told about her sacrifice and advocacy on behalf of Jonathan Irons. What she accomplished is unprecedented and unparalleled.
I cannot adequately express the amount of love I have for my ESPN colleagues. I just watched two minutes of quiet basketball as our broadcast expressed solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community against the legislation targeting our community.
Lots of folks want WNBA expansion as in more teams, but raising the cap and expanding the rosters to 15 players would go a long way to alleviating some of the challenges we are seeing this season.
“This is a brave, moving article. Thank you,
@katie_barnes3
, for getting personal and sharing how in sports — like in America — racial discrimination is endemic.” —

There's an article making the rounds today that deadnames a trans person for literally no reason. Journalists, if you add a clause to your story about a trans person that includes the phrase "born as x" or "known to this person as x," rethink that choice. It's unnecessary.
The fact that both
@orangetheory
and
@DICKS
have publicly expressed interest in supporting the women’s tournament proves that there IS in fact growing interest from brands and sponsorship dollars for women’s sports.
Spent some time talking to
@S10Bird
and
@mPinoe
about social justice, whether or not they can curse in this interview, and what they wished they had done differently
I’ve tried to type out a tweet about what this piece means to me like five times. Words don’t do a good job of communicating it. Take the time to read this today. You won’t be disappointed.
What is wild to me about this was that I was this kid…16 years ago when I met Sue Bird for the first time. My brother (who is 25) STILL talks about the time she put her arm around his shoulders. And Sue is still out here inspiring youth. Pretty incredible.
"This film is about truth and accountability. So much Black and brown intellectual, physical and emotional labor was used to build this country and used to create every major f---ing art form. And we've never been given the credit." --

There’s something special brewing at South Carolina. As
@dawnstaley
gets her team ready for another title run, I went down to Columbia to watch her work.
Azzi Fudd has been through a lot in the past two years. She opens up in this ESPN Cover Story about loss, recovery, and her drive to live up to all those lofty expectations.
A lot of people in media suddenly have lots of strong takes about women's basketball who showed up to the sport like yesterday after whole ass careers either not paying attention to women's sports and/or denigrating them. Miss me.
Full news story on Dawn Staley’s comments supporting transgender athletes today, including information and notes about where law and policy stands as it pertains to college sports.
Title IX turns 50 today. Instead of empty promises and gestures lets give girls and women the sports opportunities and funding they're entitled to under the law.
Women’s sports aren’t being invaded by trans people. 18 states have trans inclusive policies at the high school level, and yet the only state ever receiving attention is CT over two trans girls who are now in college. Not running.
There have been more upsets in the women’s tournament than the men’s. A 5’11” woman won a dunk contest with four different dunks. It’s time to just call the wbb hate what it is: sexist af.
The journey for
@Kelseyplum10
to get to this moment has been longer anticipated. It’s been harder too. In a wide ranging profile, I went deep on the competitive fire burning the guard’s quest for a championship.
I know the Super Bowl is tonight but this is important. UCLA and OU gymnastics play a video paying tribute to survivors of Nassar's abuse within their teams' extended families. Excerpts of their victim statements are playing. They honored the survivors on hand after. Wow.
My mom, who hasn’t watched much WNBA this year, is crying on my couch because Candace is crying after screaming at the television for the last three minutes of the game rooting for the Mercury. An incredible end to the season imo
When fans and players criticize representation and who gets attention from media and other elements of pop culture, this is what they’re talking about. 4/5 jerseys for white players and not including the leagues MVP or the finals MVP.
When I started this project, I never imagined it would cover a news story as it unfolded. I did my best to cover the shifting policy, legislative, and cultural landscape in these pages. I have never been more proud of a project. You can pre-order here:
Black women and gender non-confirming people have led and been leading the activist movement seen in sports. What I find most disappointing is that even in a year filled with examples of black excellence, the leadership from black people about valuing black lives was erased
*Male athletes.
Seriously. Let’s stop framing the lack of out male athletes as the primary concern facing lgbtq athletes. The pining for an out QB 1.) doesn’t help and 2.) erases the progress made in women’s sports and the current attacks on trans youth.
The anti-queer and anti-masc conversation bubbling up right now in wbb circles is really interesting because wnba tried that from a marketing perspective years ago. It didn’t work. Authenticity does. And that’s true for ALL players.
Lia Thomas won a conference championship tonight. One of her teammates is wearing a face mask with the transgender flag to show her support.
From Andie Myers: “I think it’s really brave what she’s doing today.”
I’ve always had to be Kyle or Kavonte or KD. Now I can be Katie. Shouts to
@EASPORTSNBA
for taking this step towards equality in gaming.
#ShesInTheGame
How the reigning WNBA mvp, who just won a championship, has an amazing personality and is one of the most recognizable faces in wbb isn’t on the video game cover…
I shouldn’t be surprised. And yet!
Y’all. When I met my wife, she did not know what March Madness was. Six years later, she has proactively reaches out to her principal to ensure that there will be a bracket contest. I’m so proud.
What I have learned from the success of Shakira Austin and Aliyah Boston is that my first born should be named Beyoncé Cleveland to guarantee her superstardom
Missed all the rim lowering discourse yesterday, so please accept my late contribution: 6’1” Fran Belibi dunking on a 10’ hoop as it is rising to the ceiling.
From picking up dog poop in her backyard to barking at the Nevada governor to vulnerable and candid moments, this is Kelsey Plum like you’ve never seen her before.
I've been thinking a lot about the Sportsperson of the Year yesterday and today, and setting aside who should have been honored, what I keep returning to is solidarity. What has made the WNBA players' activism so special is that they have done it together. United.
There is a distinct sadness I’ve felt all day watching my colleagues and black people all through media unpack their pain for consumption as a plea for non-black people to pay attention, to see our fear, and to validate our humanity. Please. Care about us. All of us.
It’s International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia. So love the queer people in your life and the world today and every day. We’re just out here trying to live.
#IDAHOTB
I think my favorite thing about the WNBA GOAT convo is the old heads acting like Taurasi is new. Homies, she entered the league in ‘04! She been here! And the fans that joined when she did, been here too 😂
Chopped it up with the 🐐. Hope everyone is ready for Taurasi to stick around for awhile. I get the sense she’s real tired of being asked when she’s going to retire 😂.
With Moonlight last year and Call Me By Your Name this year being recognized for their amazing accomplishments, it makes me wonder what would happen if Pariah came out now. Would it get the awards love and attention that it deserved back in 2011?
It's not about cakes. This is about the right to exist in public space. It shouldn't be a privilege to get a wedding cake, or be seated at a restaurant or access the bathroom. This is a fundamental debate about humanity, and frankly, I'm tired.
#MasterpieceCakeshop
One thing that I've really struggled with as of late is finding my place within communities of marginalized journalists. A lot of spaces designed for "Women in Sports," are explicitly not inclusive of someone like me.
