And get this — a “not insignificant” portion of the clawed back funds will be used to procure yet ANOTHER standardized test for our students to take. Because that’s just what students and teachers need, right? You can’t make this stuff up.

I’m not surprised the current Superintendent can’t see the connections between student mental health and academic success — he’s intent on taking our schools back to the 19th century.

Organizations with outstanding track records of helping kids and families like @VOSYMCA, @bgcarizona , @notMYkidtweets, and @PlayworksAZ apparently had their funds stripped away this week, one year into their two year grant.

The organizations that had their funds cut are in the middle of helping Arizona students recover from the impacts of COVID — and many of these programs focus on the mental health challenges students and families continue to face.

Making sustainable investments in public schools should be our highest priority. I'm encouraged by some new investments in key education areas, but urge lawmakers to do more to bring AZ's public school funding on par with our neighboring states.

As I warned last year, ESA vouchers are a taxpayer-funded coupon for the wealthy, with 80% of recipients never attending public school. Our lawmakers need to stand up to special interests and put a growth cap on this program — before it bankrupts our public schools and our state.

It was wonderful to tour Westwood HS and Kyrene de las Manitas Elem to see the @asueducation Next Education Workforce in action. With strategic team teaching, educators collaborate and have dedicated planning time to be creative and personalize learning #NextEducationWorkforce

So much has changed over the past 5 years. Yet, Arizona public school teachers and students are still not given the respect they deserve. It’s not rocket science. Politicians need to stop micromanaging classrooms and start investing in them.

From 900 students for every one school counselor to 651 students per school counselor in just four years, every single investment in our students' mental health and wellbeing counted.

When I first ran for office, I said that our public schools needed a relentless optimist. I’m proud to say at the end of this journey as State Superintendent, that my optimism has only grown through the work we have accomplished at ADE.

As my final act in office, I’m proud to announce a $6.75 million investment in school meals. Students qualifying for reduced-price meals will have their fees waived beginning in January through the end of school year 2023-2024.
