HB 8: STAARâ Ends âone test, one dayââ
Creates shorter testsâ
Through-year growthâ
Results within 48 hrsâ
Less test anxietyâ
Predictable cut scoresâ

More legislative oversightâ
A better system for students, teachers and parents.
The days of STAAR testing are numbered. Thanks to the leadership of Rep. @BradBuckleyDVM, HB 8 marks a historic shift for Texas education. This landmark bill ends the era of high-stakes, one-size-fits-all STAAR testing and replaces it with instructionally supportive assessments

âEquitable gradingâ is a terrible trend. A clear picture of academic struggle should inform supports. Free points donât help kids learn.
âEquity grading is not leveling the playing field. It is simply lowering standards so that school districts look like they are meeting kids where they are, when in fact they are hiding their failuresâŚâ

Proud to testify today in support of legislation by @TeamBettencourt that evolves the TX assessment system and ensures we have a predictable and consistent accountability system.
Austin, Texas â Today I chaired the Senate Education (Kâ16) Committee to hear SB 8, which will finally end the STAAR test. For years, Iâve been determined to replace STAAR with a 21st-century assessment to track progress, provide support, and close achievement gapsâwhile

As a public school parent, I've seen firsthand the efforts to improve public schools over the past 5 years. As an ed policy wonk, I've also witnessed the critical role accountability plays in doing good (but sometimes hard!) things. This was a joy to write.
Over at @dallasnews, @katecgreer highlights the importance of A-F accountability ratings in helping students succeed in Texas public schools. #txed đ° Full story:

When TIA was passed in 2019, only a handful of schools in the state had a merit pay system in place. Today, ~70% of students attend a TIA district -- with hopefully even more to come after this session's TIA expansion.

Plus things like needed SPED funding, and tweaks to Texas' approach to turnaround campuses to ensure chronically underperforming schools have a proven framework to transform outcomes for kids.

But that's not all: the bill follows best practice on high school advising & ensures students have support to matriculate into college/career training. HB 2 also directs more resources toward Texas' at-risk students, who continue to fall further behind without targeted support.
