“Equitable grading” is a terrible trend. A clear picture of academic struggle should inform supports. Free points don’t help kids learn.

“Equity grading is not leveling the playing field. It is simply lowering standards so that school districts look like they are meeting kids where they are, when in fact they are hiding their failures…”

The fact that our two largest urban school districts in Texas — with some but not a lot of pockets of wealth — are now a B in the state accountability system is one of the big takeaways in this year’s ratings. #txlege #txed

Austin, Texas — Today I chaired the Senate Education (K–16) Committee to hear SB 8, which will finally end the STAAR test. For years, I’ve been determined to replace STAAR with a 21st-century assessment to track progress, provide support, and close achievement gaps—while

As a public school parent, I've seen firsthand the efforts to improve public schools over the past 5 years. As an ed policy wonk, I've also witnessed the critical role accountability plays in doing good (but sometimes hard!) things. This was a joy to write.

When TIA was passed in 2019, only a handful of schools in the state had a merit pay system in place. Today, ~70% of students attend a TIA district -- with hopefully even more to come after this session's TIA expansion.

But that's not all: the bill follows best practice on high school advising & ensures students have support to matriculate into college/career training. HB 2 also directs more resources toward Texas' at-risk students, who continue to fall further behind without targeted support.
