Hopefully the sports (especially soccer) world will eventually migrate over. If not, I can at least keep tabs on them. I'll still pop in here every once in a while, but I think it'll be pretty infrequently.

But I've also noticed that most of the sports chatter is still here, not over on Mastodon. And these days, sports was a big part of the fun of Twitter. My strategy: I've made twitter lists of key accounts and I'm following them via @NetNewsWire.

The signal-to-noise ratio seems higher, and I just can't deal with the hot mess that is the Twitter algorithm + UX.

Since Twitter shut down third-party clients (RIP @tweetbot), I've spent much less time on this site. And since @tapbots released Ivory, I'm spending much more time over on the elephant site. (I'm @karlnelson@mastodon.world, btw.) I'm following fewer people, but maybe that's okay.

It really is shocking how bad of an experience the normal Twitter client/web site is when you’re used to a good third party client. Like, I don’t know how y’all have managed for all these years….

Uh, did Twitter block third party clients or is this just a symptom of Twitter’s crumbling infrastructure?.

(It is sort of odd to tell people you're building a boat when you only have a couple of round sticks to show for it. Here's hoping I make something more boat-shaped in 2023. ).

If you're curious about how I got to this point, I have two posts on my attempts to build a spar lathe:.

As a college freshman, I took a “intro to the internet” course in the fall of ’94. Covered things like ftp, telnet, usenet, etc. WWW with lynx. In Dec, TA told us about this cool new thing called Netscape, but we didn’t need to worry about it because it wasn’t on the test.

An awful lot of the tech and edu folks I follow have jumped off the good ship Twitter. I just need the soccer folks to follow, ‘cause right now they all seem to have stayed here.

Shocked and saddened to hear about the death of Grant Wahl, who had done so much good work covering soccer (and all sports) for so long. Peace be to his memory.

On the plus side, I really didn’t want this to go to penalties, because I have stuff to do this morning. 😕.

My take: this is a blow for the Sounders. Garth is the best GM in the league. BUT… if he’s done his job well (and I suspect he has), he’ll have created a structure and a culture that’ll mean he’s replaceable.

Who's got takes on Garth to Atlanta? This is a bombshell, I feel like I should check the pulse of the people right now, hit me with some takes.
