Blame the rebranding of evil villains as marginalized, oppressed poor victims in mass media the past few decades. You can be the most wicked (ha), violent criminal but as long as you're a perceived victim of the white cisheteropatriarchal system, you can do wrong!
Many people on 'the left' sympathise with criminals more than they sympathise with law-abiding people. I see it constantly and it's bizarre. I don't think it's even a conscious process... They just reflexively defend bad guys. It's like a mothering instinct gone wrong.
