Damian Lillard says he will not compete in All-Star game or 3 pt. Contest because of groin injury. Says he hopes somebody deserving like Devin Booker replaces him.
This is one of the cool things Blazers’ coach Terry Stotts does on road: huddles team and quizzes them about the men behind the numbers hanging in rafters of each arena. Raises awareness and adds perspective to generations of players who came before them.

Before game, 11-year-old Ethan was brought to tears when he got
@Dame_Lillard
’s autograph. “Why you crying?” Lillard asked. “It’s my first time meeting you, bro” Ethan said. Lillard couldn’t get over his response.
A (not-so) brief update: I am taking a leave of absence from The Athletic to work on my mental health. I have not been myself lately. Some of my struggles have to do with coping with a series of sudden losses. Some has to do with frustrations of a changing industry …(1/6)
Jusuf Nurkic said he started dressing at home with 3 minutes left in the third quarter. By the time he arrived there was 3:20 left in game and Blazers down 113-105. “I knew I could make a difference,” he said.
It can not be overstated how much Carmelo Anthony has helped the Blazers. Their spacing, cutting and passing for past two games has been at another level. Still early in this venture, but boy looks like this could be fun. He’s been really good for them.
I rarely, if ever, comment on officiating. That no-goaltending call on Lillard layin late at Utah was egregious. NBA refs simply have to be better. Crazy how all 3 didn’t see something so obvious.
Gary Trent Jr. is no longer a Trail Blazer, but he will forever be an example of the heights one can reach with hard work and determination. From the minute he was drafted, Trent Jr. never accepted that he was a second-rounder, and he put in the work to prove it.
Going to be a lot of happy coaches and players in the Blazers locker room now that Carmelo Anthony is coming back. He was revered by everyone (media included).
Blazers announce Carmelo Anthony is the recipient of the Maurice Lucas Award, given annually to player who best represents the spirit of the Blazers’ legend on and off the court.
One of the cool things about experiencing Carmelo Anthony’s return to the NBA has been seeing how much his teammates like and respect him. It was evident in fourth as he went on scoring spree and entire bench was celebrating. He has had an incredible influence on this team.
So, long story short, I’m taking this summer off to get right. Maybe I will come back and tell stories again. Or maybe I’ll become a mailman. All I know for sure is that after pouring myself into telling the stories of others, I need to work on my own story. ~ JQ (6/6)
Blazers depth:
PG: Lillard, Simons
SG: McCollum, Trent Jr.
SF: Hood, Jones Jr.
PF: Covington, Collins
C: Nurkic, Kanter
Still have three roster spots open to use bi-annual exception ($3.6 mil) and two minimums (if they want).
Standing ovation for Carmelo Anthony by Blazers home crowd who is now serenading him with “Melo! Melo! Melo!”
He went 9-for-11 and had 19 points and Blazers are routing Thunder. It’s 116-83 with 8:23 left
There is no disputing it: Nobody - nobody - performs in the clutch like Damian Lillard. He did it again Wednesday, scoring the go-ahead basket with 16.5 seconds left as Blazers win 6th straight, 126-124 at NOLA. Lillard finishes with 43 points and a career-high tying 16 assists.
So to refresh: In the mind of Damian Lillard, the Blazers' starting lineup in Orlando will be:
PG: Damian Lillard
SG: CJ McCollum
SF: Carmelo Anthony
PF: Zach Collins
C: Jusuf Nurkic
Damian Lillard made big shots, and Jusuf Nurkic was a force in the final minutes. But the Blazers are flying home today if it wasn’t for the play of Hassan Whiteside against Brooklyn. Their forgotten center had 16 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks in 15 minutes.
Helluva win by Blazers. Four starters out, six players in total. Yet with 9 guys they come in and torch East-leading Philadelphia. Rookie CJ Elleby was all over the place and Carmelo Anthony, Gary Trent Jr. and Enes Kanter were very good. Whole group deserves standing ovation.
So, I’m not big on posting personal stuff here, but I need a release. I’m hurting. My baby, my big boy, my little man, my bubba passed away in my arms today. I’m broken, hollowed, devastated. Shit doesn’t feel real.
I think Chauncey Billups has answered the question of if he can coach. Blazers’ great start has featured a lot of heady substitutions, a handful of defensive looks throughout each game, and some nice after timeout plays. Kudos to Billups and his staff.
Not really a fan of MVP chants, and there have been many over the years in Portland. But never have they been louder and more deserving than tonight after Damian Lillard extended his incredible stretch with 51 points and 12 assists in blowout win over Utah. Just amazing.
Amid the Nurkic/CJ doom-and-gloom around Blazers, I present 5 items w/confidence:
1. Never underestimate the will & talent of Lillard.
2. Collins will not wilt in this opportunity.
3. Meyers can help.
4. Curry will average 15 ppg rest of way.
5. Blazers thrive as underdogs.
No way anybody can say Blazers aren’t legit. Move to 9-3 with 106-95 win at New Orleans. Portland is 6-1 on road, has swept a road back-to-back and has season wins over Phoenix (2x), at Miami, Denver, at NO. Winning while players like Dame, Nurk and Grant are hurt … impressive.
Damian Lillard will never say it, but have a feeling his first career triple-double is more special that it came against Russell Westbrook. Have a feeling he will downplay that aspect and say it was more important that it came in a win. Either way, his incredible run continues.
“First off, let me say one thing: Everything I have done, I have earned,’’ Turner said. “My contract – that’s my bread, and I earned my bread. So, kiss my ass. Dead serious. Write that. I earned that (expletive) money.’’
We are starting to see why so many within the Blazers have been raving about the progress of Nassir Little and Anfernee Simons. The kids are growing up.
Blazers vs. OKC. Two teams that do not like each other.
"There's something there,'' Damian Lillard said tonight about the tension between the two teams. "There's something there.''
The night they roared like never before in Rip City, Damian Lillard didn’t hear it.
He was blanked out and in a rage.
The story of what went into an unforgettable shot and an epic night.
Source at Trail Blazers says organization is formulating plan to pay their part-time arena employees for the 9 home games canceled by the NBA because of COVID-19. They will reassess the program in 30 days.
My Blazers top 10:
1. Damian Lillard
2. Clyde Drexler
3. Bill Walton
4. Terry Porter
5. LaMarcus Aldridge
6. Maurice Lucas
7. Jerome Kersey
8. Buck Williams
9. Clifford Robinson
10. Geoff Petrie
The eruption from Blazers bench when Evan Turner secured a rebound for his triple double was a beautiful reflection of how he is valued by teammates. He does so much team building behind scenes and so many little things on court in games. The guys know it and appreciate it.
I don’t care who Utah is missing. Don’t care about Utah’s missed 3s. Portland has once again looked very good tonight. Remarkable turnaround of a season at the most crucial of times. Still work to do, but impressive stuff going on here.
Feel so bad for Rodney Hood. Was having a great season and I’ve never seen him happier and more talkative inside the locker room. He was finally in his comfort zone. Then this: a torn Achilles.
Never in two decades of reading game notes have I seen the Blazers’ PR department so impressively promote one of their players. Portland pushing Anfernee Simons for Most Improved Player:
Olshey’s stance with Blazers has been about keeping their talent: Crabbe, Leonard, Harkless, etc. ... they all got big money. But not Ed freaking Davis? Was the heartbeat of team and is best backup center in NBA, but not good enough to open the wallet? Huh.
What a win for the Blazers, who come from 20 behind to beat Chicago 112-107. Larry Nance Jr. was a difference maker at center, Nassir Little had big defensive stand on DeMar DeRozan late. Portland is 7-1 at home and the Moda Center rocked tonight. Best night of the season.
Unbelievable win by the Blazers behind Damian Lillard’s 50. But just an all-time meltdown by New Orleans. Did every thing possible to lose that game. Blazers were down 17 with 5:57 left and win 125-124.
There is much more going on with
@Dame_Lillard
than what fills the stat sheet and triggers the MVP talk.
He is hurting. His family is hurting. Yet, he still plays. And he still excels. A look at the turbulent times of the Blazers’ star in
@TheAthleticNBA
Edniesha Curry has joined Chauncey Billups staff on the Trail Blazers. Curry played at Oregon and is a former WNBA guard. She has been an assistant for the University of Maine men’s team since 2018.
Blazers are playing their best basketball since the first week of the season, and it has a lot to do with addition of Trevor Ariza, as well as some out-of-this-world play from Damian Lillard. Ariza has given them better defense, smarter play and appropriate size.
So, Blazers were up by 24 tonight at OKC. Thunder comes back to take 102-97 lead in 4th quarter. Then Damian Lillard hits four 3-pointers in final four minutes to lead Portland to 115-104. Lillard finishes with 31 points, 10 assists, 7 rebounds. Blazers win 5th straight.
On a personal note: Rodney was one of the nicest, most down-to-earth players who has come through Portland. There was nothing fake, showy or insincere about him. Just a gem of a human. Watching his joy for basketball return after he was traded to Portland was palpable.
Rodney Hood is no longer a Trail Blazer, but he will forever hold a place among the biggest shots in franchise history thanks to his 3-pointer in the fourth overtime of Game 3 against Denver in 2019 West semifinals.
Of 15 players on Blazers roster, nine are guards (Lillard, Simons, Bledsoe, Hart, Smith Jr., Satoransky, Johnson, McLemore, Alexander-Walker). Gotta imagine more moves ahead ...
Amazing contrast from the lifeless, uninspiring Blazers of December to what we are seeing today: an energetic, versatile and selfless group. This has been as fun to see as it has been surprising.
Blazers’ forward Nassir Little will not participate in Las Vegas Summer League. He practiced with team this week, and staff decided there was no need to play him in Vegas. He is hoping to follow trend of 3rd year Blazers who break into rotation (McCollum, Crabbe, Layman, Trent)
For the second time in his career
@Dame_Lillard
has been voted the winner of the Magic Johnson Award by the Professional Basketball Writers Association. The award is given annually to the player who combines excellence on the court with cooperation with the media.
I told Brandon Roy that Carmelo Anthony wanted to wear No. 7 in Portland. It made Roy think of Christmas Day in 2009.
What Roy thinks about Melo wearing his former number:
I don't often hype my stories, but I think Blazers fans will enjoy what's coming: a lengthy Norman Powell feature later this week. Still in interviewing stage, but with every conversation, I'm more and more impressed. Hope you will enjoy him, and his story, as much as I do.
Few in Portland will forget this night. I’ve had people tell me they could hear neighbors celebrating and horns honking. When the Blazers are rolling this town is special.
If you want a recap of Game 3, I can’t help you. My mind was on three men Saturday: Keanon Lowe, Meyers Leonard and my buddy, Jake.
A rambling story on life, death and basketball. Bear with me ...
Since the Blazers' starting lineup has included Jusuf Nurkic and Norman Powell (24 games), Portland is 16th in defense, 2nd in offense and 5th in net rating. The only teams with better net rating: Jazz, Clippers, 76ers and Knicks.
Trail Blazers announce franchise founder Harry Glickman has died at age 96. A true legend, a true gentleman, and a titan in Oregon sports history. He still attended Blazers games this year, watching from front row, near where Damian Lillard made his shot to beat OKC in playoffs.
Being told LaMarcus Aldridge to Portland will not be happening. Not a big enough role for him with Nurkic coming back Friday, and Enes Kanter playing so well.
Four wins in a row for Portland after 123-119 thriller in Memphis. Wins over Lakers, Knicks, at Bucks, at Grizz. “We have something going on,” Jusuf Nurkić says after recording 32 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
The Trail Blazers are doing everything they can to re-sign Norman Powell. If you understand his story, you’ll see why.
A deep dive on the promise and the people that drive Powell
@TheAthleticNBA
Wow. What a shot by Jerami Grant. What a win in Phoenix. What a fun, energetic and intriguing team. Amazing effort. Amazing performances: Grant, Nurk, Keon, Justise, Hart … just AMAZING.
Damian Lillard tonight can become the third player in NBA history to record three consecutive playoff games of at least 30 points and 10 assists. The other two: Michael Jordan in 1989 and Russell Westbrook in 2017. (Source: Elias Sports Bureau)
With Achilles tendinopathy already taken by Eric Bledsoe, Jusuf Nurkić gets the always reliable plantar fasciitis as the Blazers’ reason to sit him. Probably smart move to ensure high draft pick, but also kind of a bummer because it sure was fun watching the last four games.
Blazers are running the Nuggets out of the gym and are about to go to 4-0 on the season. Who would have thunk it? Pretty fun team to watch: they play hard, share ball and probably have as much athleticism as we’ve seen in years. Next up is Miami on Wednesday.
Btw: It’s just a straight benching for Derrick Jones Jr. tonight in Charlotte. No injury. No attitude issues. Just a benching.
Yes, he hasn’t been playing well. But - and just spitballing here - he isn’t the problem with the Blazers.
And Olshey said “don’t expect fireworks.” What a stunning display of elevating Blazers to another tier. Whiteside, Hood, Bazemore, Hezonja, Little. Pretty impressive.
Rodney Hood is no longer a Trail Blazer, but he will forever hold a place among the biggest shots in franchise history thanks to his 3-pointer in the fourth overtime of Game 3 against Denver in 2019 West semifinals.
Just when you think Damian Lillard can't impress any more ... he does. Another amazing, amazing performance. Not sure there has been a more clutch player in Blazers history. B-Roy was nails at end of games, but Dame has a flair for dramatic unlike any other.
Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum have never played two more important and two better games than they have in Games 1 and 2 against Oklahoma City. Stars win playoff series, and they have lived up to the responsibility. Blazers head to Oklahoma City with 2-0 lead.
