Mike Leach had trouble sleeping late Saturday night. Before he drifted off on the sofa at his home in Mississippi, he sent some text messages to friends.
He's now hospitalized and in critical condition.

Nick Rolovich has been terminated by Washington State, per a university source.
Terminated for cause, along with the other unvaccinated WSU assistants.
The Pac-12 had an offer from ESPN of $30 million per school in the fall of 2022. The network wanted it all. But the presidents and chancellors wanted more.
“We said we want $50 million per school.”
ESPN's response?
“Goodbye.”

This just in — the Oregon Ducks have asked for permission to speak with UCLA coach Chip Kelly about their fooball coaching vacancy, per University of Oregon source.
Marcus Mariota... Five seasons. Five playcallers. Three new offenses. Three head coaches.
Oh, and nine sacks tonight.
Someone get him the @%$& out of Tennessee so we can see what he can do in the NFL.
Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle donated his postseason bonuses back to Oregon State:
$150k for reaching NCAA Tournament
$300k for winning three NCAA Tournament games.
Total: $450,000
All OSU coaches in all sports donated bonuses due to pandemic as reported by
@nickdaschel
Final: Colorado beats Florida 102-100.
Pac-12 is 5-0 in the NCAA Tournament.
Another SEC team KO’ed.
*** $18 million (and counting) in NCAA Tournament revenue for OSU/WSU.
How soft have we become that Mario Cristobal giving a player an a— chewing for a selfish play becomes a big public debate?
Player screwed up and got yanked. Coach got in his face because of it. Also love that the player responded well and went back in the game.
That’s coaching.
So much effort and energy spent on discrediting the reporter and threatening to sue… before the piece has even been published.
This won’t end well for Kim Mulkey.
Michigan State… you got a good football coach.
- He’s easy to root for & you’ll like him.
- He’ll win some big games.
- He’ll go for it on fourth down, (including a few times he shouldn’t).
- He’ll make it fun again for fans.
- His offense reminds of the 49ers.
- He’s…
Oregon State's Jonathan Smith on sharing the Pac-12 Coach of the Year award with Washington coach Kalen DeBoer:
"I might have won the thing outright if I didn't vote for the guy." --

Oregon had three of the top eight WNBA picks.
South Carolina was great. Baylor too. Apologies to both, but if the Final Four was played... Oregon beats everyone by 10+.
Civil War football game is on for 2024 and beyond. Oregon State and Oregon finalizing deal.
Ducks vs. Beavers on Sept. 14 at Reser Stadium.
(PS: Texas Tech will play at WSU in 2024)

I asked LeGarrette Blount about playing for Bill Belichick:
"I love Bill to death. It was great playing for Bill… transparency was huge for me. Honesty was huge for me. He is someone you can respect as a man of his word."
Dan Lanning isn’t leaving Oregon for Auburn.
Not happening.
Whoever is reporting “mutual interest” hasn’t bothered to ask Lanning.
Enjoy your Sunday evening.

“When I was in high school I coached the third-grade basketball team and we were damn good."
Just drove past a baseball field and saw the rarest thing... three kids playing, no adults around.
One at plate. One on mound. One in the field.
More please.
I asked ex-Fresno State coach Pat Hill once why he agreed to play at Ohio State, at Wisconsin, at UCLA, at Oregon and at USC, among others.
He shot back, "What are they gonna do, eat ya?"
Three things Pac-12 CEO Group WONT discuss today but SHOULD:
— Timeline for dumping commissioner Larry Scott
— Its unhealthy obsession with the Big Ten
— Who in the room can’t get Pac-12 Network at home.
Remember when Oregon State took a full page ad out in The Oregonian to congratulate rival Oregon QB Marcus Mariota for winning the Heisman?
Classy move.
BREAKING: Oregon Health Authority and Oregon Gov. Kate Brown have revised mask mandate rules for sports that compete outdoors.
Athletes competing in non-contact sports may remove mask for competition.
Common sense prevails.
Mario Cristobal with a shot at UW coach Jimmy Lake in the post-game:
"Proud of the way our guys came over and showed their prowess in the inclement weather."
Arena in Corvallis has gone silent and Oregon and Oregon State womens’s basketball teams are at mid court... prayed and broke the prayed huddle together with “Kobe.”

Pac-12 weighing whether to dump the North-South divisional structure in future football seasons, per commissioner George Kliavkoff.
Would result in just the best two teams in the conference playing in title game in Las Vegas each year.
"I grew up where conduct spoke louder than words," Judge Gary Libey said.
Judge orders that WSU and OSU will be the only two governing members of the Pac-12 board. Provides that the other 10 schools are allowed discussion and comments, but not votes.
A lot of really good people working at Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State caught in the gears of realignment on Friday.
Let’s remember that amid the debate and emotions.
Greg Sankey, SEC commissioner, no threat to be booed during trophy presentation. None.
Guy has zero ego, works hard to get his conference what it needs... and is paid less than half of what Pac 12 commissioner makes.
Oregon Ducks coach Mario Cristobal gathered his team earlier today when news of Miami opening included him as a possible candidate and he told his players: “I’m not going anywhere.”
It was the only statement Cristobal felt he needed to make.
A long-time college administrator watching the realignment madness told me this today:
"I predict in 5-10 years they will all migrate back. I don’t know how, but 18/16 team leagues with all that travel just isn’t sustainable."
You know what’s really impressive about the Pac-12?
Its fans.
Passionate. Engaged. Hungry for solutions.
I’ve heard from so many of you in the last week. You’re ready for something new.
Let’s see… Oregon blew a 21-point second-half lead… David Shaw is stepping down at Stanford… Kenny Dillingham will be introduced at ASU… Washington may end up in Rose Bowl… Oregon State went 9-3… how’s your Sunday morning?
Among TEs in college football, Utah's Dalton Kinkaid is:
No. 1 in receiving yards (850)
No. 2 in receptions (66)
No. 2 in receiving TDs (8)
No. 1 in yards after catch (378)
Finalists for the Mackey Award:
Brock Bowers, Georgia
Michael Mayer, Notre Dame
Sam LaPorta, Iowa
A lot of time spent on what the Pac-12 doesn't have. But you know what it does have? The conference's greatest asset are passionate, ticket-buying fans at 12 universities that will always and forever give a s--t.
Those fans deserve better leadership from the conference.
10-0 Washington is coming to 8-2 Oregon State next Saturday and ESPN College GameDay decided to shine the light on the Sun Belt Conference?
The sheer hypocrisy of that is both telling and astounding.

Watching Cal-UCLA to the end… final regular-season “Pac-12” game is sobering stuff.
Thinking about all the great players… games… coaches… and my own memories as a kid of the Pac-10.
Too many “lasts” this college football season.
Spoke to lawmakers in Washington and Oregon today. There's a movement afoot to emphasize that the public and taxpayers do not want public Pac-12 universities split from each other.
The effort, if successful, would keep OSU-Oregon together and WSU-Washington together.
Pac-12 should not have announced the football Week 7 schedule until it knew Washington’s status. Colorado should be livid.
There’s just no big-picture thought from the conference.
Departing schools sought to have the “Pac-12” cover part of the transition costs for the 10 members who are leaving for other conferences.
Oregon State and Washington State aren’t on board w that.
Plaintiffs attorney Eric MacMichael offered: “Why in the world?!?…”
Source at Oregon confirms that University of Oregon has a contract extension offer in front of Mario Cristobal.
“It’s aggressive and in line with what we’ve seen this week,” per source.
Brian Kelly and Lincoln Riley dollars, I’m told.
Updated column:
ESPN's coverage of Oregon State's NCAA Tournament win over Notre Dame was disappointing. It missed the mark.
"The Irish" ... "the Irish" ... "the Irish" were the focus. Notre Dame didn't just lose. It got beat by a better team -- America's team.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and wife, Lori, showed up today and broke ground on a $213M research and tech complex at Oregon State.
They are both OSU graduates. Their names will be on the 150,000-square-foot complex when it opens in 2026.
Outgoing Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead is sticking around to help coach the Ducks in the Alamo Bowl.
Moorhead has already been named new head coach at Akron.
Looking forward to seeing him call this game.
Washington feels unlikely to be able to play this weekend.
Given that the Pac-12 doesn’t have a College Football Playoff contender… why not push back the conference title game by a week or two and let USC-Colorado and Oregon-Washington play it out on the field?
BREAKING: University of Oregon has extended the contract of football coach Dan Lanning, per source.
Contract for

UO Board expected to approve the extension Thursday.
Kobe Bryant died today. His daughter, GiGi, did, too. They were among the souls lost in that helicopter crash.
My column on the Civil War basketball game that became about so much more than … basketball:
We gotta stop calling this current four-team college football postseason event a “playoff.”
Until it expands and includes automatic berths for conference champions it’s an invitational tournament.
Five Power Conferences… only four playoff spots. This four-team “invitational” was broken from go.
Now that the SEC is potentially caught in its jaws, it’s a problem? Pac-12 champion only made the playoff twice in the first nine seasons. Just sayin’.
