And EU might usefully think about the economic security case to strengthen relationships nearer to home…including with U.K.
The right way forward is not to build a "fortress Europe" but to build a joint economic space with like-minded countries that share values and interests. Japan, South Korea, Canada, others, but also India etc.

Commission starting point was ridiculous. Talks set up to fail. Right shdn’t overdramatise. But it is negative: for efforts to build cooperation between EU&UK, and to reinforce European defence capability (which is why I hope some EU capitals will be asking why this happened)

EU demand looks like a shakedown. 7bn to allow UK defence companies to compete for a share of contracts (funded by loans)? Sounds like an attempt to lock UK business out, rather than build an effective European defence market…Thought we were in this together

Might not’ve expressed it quite like this. But both sides, EU & UK, need to follow up on May Summit, especially if they’re to build for the future (champagne corks will be popping in Moscow, and elsewhere, if they don’t)
One can only imagine the screams of betrayal in Brussels if the UK was backtracking on the common understanding agreed in May. But it is an EU struggling to find any commonality in trade policy largely due to extreme French positions (on every subject).

Don’t agree with David on much, these days. But this is a good, punchy review

Worth reading. Closer links with the Brits ‘would bring a lot of additional strength’ to European defence, as the US focuses elsewhere

Well worth your time…closer EU/UK cooperation on defence is necessary to defend Europe as US reassesses its priorities. A new era for EU-UK defence cooperation: https://t.co/3YqjlQ5ySR via @ecfr

A new defence pact between Britain and the EU could establish a framework for deeper, long-term collaboration. For it to work well, London and Brussels will need to iron out six key issues

I hope this marks the end of the classic ‘nothing has been agreed until everything is agreed’ phase, and that we can get on and negotiate deals in the different areas and implement them as they are done. In some areas there is a lot of detail in the Common Understanding document.

I agree almost completely with this by Julian King for @CER_EU - so much so that I have something similar drafted for likely publication next week! This is the moment for ambition in UK-EU relations.

Yes. The IISS bottom-line is that 66% of European defence procurement is NOT from the US -meaning military budget increases in Europe do NOT go to the US. The majority of European military spending comes back to European taxpayers in the form of orders and jobs
Delegates at #IISSPDS24 have asked why our European defence procurement figures are different from the Draghi Report? Answer: We measure procurement, they measure international armaments transfer. Read the IISS Strategic Dossier now: https://t.co/CYt0wZzYeh
