1/ #Foodsecurity is important for #goodhealth and the expansion of #ChildTaxCredit (CTC) improved the financial circumstances of many American families. @shaferpr, @JuliaRaifman and team have a pair of papers in @JAMANetworkOpen illustrating how the #CTC improved #foodsecurity.

If academia truly is “a calling”, let’s take away tenure and see how full profs feel.

Outstanding public policy/admin work here. Well done @pamela_herd & @donmoyn! Nice to see NYT publish two excellent, informative, smart and engaging pieces on critical public policy issues today - along with Klein on homelessness.

We pay a lot of attention to government failures. But if we want better outcomes, we must celebrate and learn from the wins, too.

1/ Do economic opportunities have intrinsic importance for well-being, above and beyond any effects on income? An interesting experimental study (forthcoming @AEAjournals) finds that employment improves psychosocial well-being more than cash alone: https://t.co/sJn9ngrdap

It's academic job search season. I can't understand some of these salaries I'm seeing posted. Assistant Professor roles for considerably less than what a classroom teacher makes. Not sure how these universities think they can recruit professors at these salaries. #AcademicTwitter

Since I have left academia, I bought a house and fulfilled the requirements to apply for citizenship and thinking of having kids. Academia was not just job instability, it was life instability. @AltAcChats

Check out our new paper on the impacts of wildfire smoke exposure on test scores, expertly led by @jeffliwen. Smoke exposure during school year lowers test scores at end of year, w/ monetized costs in billions annually.

“Don’t ask about salary before getting a verbal offer” Expecting academic job candidates to wait for months of applying and interviewing to find out the salary for the role they’ve invested so much time is in absolutely wild and incredibly toxic.

Gonna regret this: Something that gets lost in controversy over postdoc & grad student pay, is it's the consequence of underpay in nearly ALL academia. R1 TT asst profs in social psych start at ~ $75k; our teaching colleagues make much less. Wage compression hurts everyone.

The "missing Americans": early death in the United States In a new pre-print, we quantify the number of deaths that would have been averted each year, 1933-2021, if the U.S. had mortality rates equal to the average of 18 peer nations. https://t.co/pUJmr43lYf Thread. 1/15

Someone very important to me died by suicide, and @RMCarpiano is good to remind us that someone is always there.

It's hard to see how tenure-track PhD roles will not be priced out by industry, which has not only WAY better pay, but widespread remote work options, better resources, bigger data, flexibility, and more opportunity. https://t.co/YxSFRxfzAf

Mental health problems increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. The knowledge that one is less at risk after being vaccinated may alleviate distress, but this hypothesis remains unexplored. This study...

Worth noting that you can pick any random event from 50 years ago and attribute any of these trends to that event and write the same tweet as this one.
