Actual, extremely cursed abstraction in the codebase I'm working on: HamburgerBasementViewController

I’m convinced some PM at Meta led putting the ‘See More’ button unavoidably close to the Like button so you accidentally tap Like half the time just to then gloat about increasing engagement on their annual review (and then got a bonus).

I’m glad that there’s still people explicitly thinking about achieving 60 fps. As device capabilities quickly increased, much performance tuning became a lost art.
Truly enjoyed working on the new map in Waymo app, I rewrote it from scratch in SwiftUI, it’s fully server-driven, 60fps with no lag between the map and content. Almost no MapsSDK API usage allowing to do fun things like screenshot testing overlays without the real map beneath 🥹

In fact, paradoxically, not having domain expertise is sometimes the best way to evaluate these things. Because, often, the best evaluation metric is: Can someone unfamiliar with this easily understand it? This is timeless.

Not necessarily. Even in areas I’m not familiar with, I still find it necessary look out for generic coding best practices: single sources of truth, simple business logic flows, useful, reasonable dependencies + abstractions. I often dont’t need domain expertise to evaluate this.
A few things I've noticed as all devs write code with AI. When you write foundational / architectural code of a new project by hand, you "feel" the code pushing back if your abstraction isn't right. You feel when something is harder than it should be. The code is telling you

I wonder if someone inside Apple is tasked with building a model that detects whether you're still dating someone in order to decide whether to show pictures of them in your Year in Review.

DC tech advertising is wild: - Meta billboards promoting the parental control of Instagram Teen Accounts -Block bus ads questioning whether Bitcoin is a security

A really solid breakdown of the last 3 years of LLM platform development.
My (speculative) assessment of OpenAI's path, current state & the future: OpenAI: - Right now its 'thinking' model is a lot stronger than anyone else's, while 'non-thinking' model is clearly lagging behind - OpenAI discovered o1's inference time compute scaling and changed

A couple of times now, I’ve gotten nerd sniped by AI. AI will be able to do something that’s traditionally laborious really fast, I’ll think I can make some quick wins and start down a refactor, then AI completely fumbles something else that’s easy. 🙃

How’s everyone feeling about Liquid Glass? I’m super frustrated with it. Feels like many of the bigger changes are for the worse. Overall worse than the iOS 7 transition to flat design. I’m amazed that it feels like there’s less uproar than iOS 7?

Tfw you touch a freshly unwrapped new iPhone screen and it's 'sticky' because there's literally zero finger smudges on the fresh glass

Easily the biggest hangup to efficient LLM usage on iOS is actor-isolation and Sendable. Without those features, LLM usage in the iOS world would be totally different.

Well, it took 6 months, but I am making my first attempt at dual-wielding LLM sessions in different work trees for concurrent development work.

Random, very specific nit: Just discovered @paperswithcode got absorbed into @huggingface recently and the new website for it is a way less useful downgrade from a previously great tool. :(
