Overhearing someone discussing moderation strategies for a 'dating app' he's building and it's the most ghoulish and lazy fucking thinking I've ever heard.

Seems to me the spreadsheet class has absolutely no idea why people do the things they do or what their motivations are. Either that or they are highly motivated to dismiss, ignore, or otherwise invalidate those motivations.

I don't think Fukuyama is particularly misunderstood and this 'prediction' was an example of him hedging his bets, rather than 'serious' or prescient analysis.

Fukuyama is the most misunderstood contemporary intellectual, and his detractors never read past the title of ‘The End of History.’. He absolutely did not predict we’d be living in some liberal post-Soviet utopia; in fact, he predicted backsliding to violent anti-liberalism.

With modernist art, I think monosubjectual iterative series are more common because of how technology changed and made industrial production of the arts possible, such as through lithographs, silkscreens, and then later industrial manufacturing. Judd, Warhol, Braque

Both pre-industrial forms of replication and iteration (IIRC they're engravings and woodblock prints), but they are focused on different subjects/themes within a single series. images are Rembrant's self portraits and The sixty-nine stations of the Kiso Kaido

I actually think there is something to this, but it's caused by commerce and technology and art being forced to react to it, rather than it being a failing of art. Take, for example, premodernist series like Goya's Disasters of War or Hiroshige's 53 Stations of the Tokaido

A part of modernism is the speed and possibility of replication that classical artists could not achieve due to technological constraints, but this phenomenon leads to very confused takes on art, such as the idea classical artists didn't iterate works around a singular subject.

I dislike about modern art that an artist will have a single idea and make it the topic of not just one, but four paintings. In a classical painting there could be half a dozen little winks to the viewer like this one, none of them even forming the main theme.

Not being the most of X doesn't mean you aren't X. this is embarrassingly silly.

Sigma being from Aizu but doing a rebranding that feels partially stuck in the past has a funny element of irony for me because Aizu is the subject and origin of Kiyoshi Saito's most famous woodblock prints series 'Winter in Aizu', notable in part for how contemporary they feel.

The wordmark is very good, the images, art direction, and packaging are actually pretty underwhelming. It will be interesting to see how it ages.

the sigma rebrand is probably one of the most elegant deblandings of them all
