No AB tests, no growth tactics, no hashtags, no marketing department, no cartoon characters on ladders.
Just trying to explain the product in clear terms with good taste and design

It’s been wild to see these three productivity apps bloom almost at the same time and they all been founded 4-5 years ago. Success takes its time.
Congress is moving to permanently bar the IRS from creating a free electronic tax filing system. Companies like TurboTax and H&R Block have lobbied for years to block the IRS from doing so.
A bug in my code implemented range based multi-select when Shift is pressed and mouse is moved. While it’s completely unintentional, it’s also the fastest range select I can think of so we’re leaving it in

I'm just going to say it: SOC2 is a cancer in our industry with strong network effects. The fact that it costs $20k and takes non-trivial amount of time yearly for a documentation that in the end has very little to do with actual security.
Don't get me wrong, many of the
Starting this month,
@coinbase
’s engineering team will be giving $25k each month to open source projects.
@dustmason
wrote about Ruby projects we're supporting this months:
@rubytogether
, RSpec and Rubocop!
Running a distributed company definitely attracts different applicant pool from your typical SF startup; a lot of experienced folks who moved out of cities and have young children they want to spend more time with. If you care about family and work/life balance, drop me a DM 😌
Internal tools don't always have to be ugly; At
@linear
we expose a custom developer toolbar inspired by VS Code to internal users to monitor rendering FPS, change between user roles, control feature flags etc
“He went out to raise $1m, and fell short. He only raised $600k of the round at a $10m valuation.”
And today Coinbase is valued at 8Bn. Go Brian & team 👏
I'm truly puzzled by the market for Android engineers; we been looking but hard to find ones with strong engineering and product sense. Do they exist? Most tenured people seem to be turned into Android infra unlike iOS where people build apps and experiences
I was woken up last night at 3am with a Pagerduty message "data is being deleted". This is a nightmare situation for any engineer or founder.
Team is working hard on disaster recovery caused by a bad migration, please bear with us. Post-mortem to follow
Earlier today, Linear experienced an outage and data loss incident. We have restored service and are actively recovering lost data. Below is a status report we shared with affected customers.
Today, I’m thrilled to announce our $35M Series B led by
@Accel
, along with
@sequoia
,
@01Advisors
and some incredible leaders and product folks.
@linear
has never been in a better position to help companies to build great software.
This is perhaps the biggest secret to the productivity and viability of our two-person teams at 37signals. All our web designers work directly with the native materials of HTML, CSS, and usually even a fair bit of JavaScript and Ruby. Not in Figma.
Updated
@Linear
's website to showcase some of our amazing customers. It's feels unreal that we opened the product publicly only 9 months ago and today we get to build the tool together with such great partners (and thousands of others)
Completely forgot about this but during the first year of
@linear
we had a button in the UI which allowed you to send feedback that went to all of us founders. One of the best product decisions we made at the time
You can learn more about your users by putting a giant Give Feedback button in your app (with live chat) than if you spent $1 million on professional “user research”
Extremely disappointed by Google Domains sell-off. Great, no-frills product with top notch security thanks to Google accounts. I have no desire to be a Squarespace customer. Time for
@cloudflare
to increase TLD coverage /cc
@eastdakota
Personal update: After 8 years in SF, I’ve moved to NYC! 🗽 It’s hard to say farewell to good friends, world class coffee and the nature, but it’s time for a change. I feel incredible lucky to have met so many amazing people, including the person I know call my wife
It’s happening: we’re looking for
@linear
’s founding mobile engineer to help us define what mobile looks at Linear. Founder mindset, product/design intuition, strong engineering challenges… if you know anyone, let us know!
If
@CloudflareDev
would have even 10% of the DX focus of Vercel they would absolutely be killing it with Workers suite of products. Amazing inexpensive offering wrapped in a too convoluted developer story with "just ok" docs and examples
Current status of AI at 95% of companies:
- Large company: here's our Copilot, Coming Soon™️(?)
- Startup: Here's our ✨ AI summarization we build over the weekend
Not trying to be negative (I am), but instead of jumping the hypetrain, try to really understand how AI can help
One thing that
@Coinbase
did well in the early days was week long “worktrials” for all candidates. Linear has adopted it (as have other CB alumni) and it’s an amazing tool for both the company and the candidate especially very early days when building the founding team
Excited to share
@linear_app
's Series A and 2020.12 Release with Roadmaps!
We don't often do big product launches but Roadmap felt significant. It's something that grew out of our own, and our users', practices. And we made a site ✨
Last week we released
@linear
's TS/JS SDK. To lower the barrier for developers to try it out, you can now load an authenticated SDK instance inside your browser's Javascript console!
With salary Twitter in full steam it's unfortunate how folks focus on salary and not equity/opportunity in early stage/career. That's where the real wealth generation is if you're smart and pick growth companies to work for
Fun fact about
@linear
’s launch site; the WebGL animation was designed and built in a week internally without past WebGL experience.
If you’re looking for new challenges in a high performing and passionated team, let me know 🙂
Saw someone working on their pitch deck while watching
@mwseibel
on Youtube at a coffee shop in Mexico City.
I would not be surprised if in the end biggest impact
@ycombinator
makes is through their free online material/Startup School
React is great for websites, wizards etc but it’s still incredibly hard to build really fast and interactive (drag&drop, shortcuts etc) applications. Not sure what this would require but there’s an opportunity for something new
I find it silly that people consider joining early stage startup “risky” with salary upwards of 150k. Sure, company can fail but they rarely fail overnight and you have ample time to start looking for another job. It’s not risk, it’s just opportunity cost and you’ll learn most
We have an internal CLI at
@linear
(‘linctl’) which we use to manage rollbacks, configurations and other developer tasks as it’s all Typescript and React (ink). Super low barrier to add new tools. Would recommend for others as well over dashboards
I never been more bullish on a company than I’m about Coinbase today. Amazing team, products and huge potential. Kudos to
@brian_armstrong
for building such an exceptional company! 🎉
Today is Coinbase’s sixth anniversary. We’re celebrating six incredible years working toward our mission to help create a more open financial system for the world! 🎉🌍
Roadmap timeline is almost here. Join our community chat May 27th for a live demo. We'll share how we built it and tips on how to use timeline with roadmap and projects. RSVP 👉
Unspoken truth about starting startups for technical founders: do not expect to write any critical path code after first two years if you want the company to be successful. Exceptions do exist but not for really for CEOs. But building the company can be also fun, just more
Really smart pattern from our web team: on React’s ErrorBoundary, ask the user to describe how they encountered the bug and pass report with the exception into Bugsnag
3.5 years after launching her much talked about contacts app,
@marissamayer
is back at launching a photo sharing app.
What next, a location checkin app?
Whether you are on a trip, at a party, or just hanging out, you just:
1. Create an album with a time and place.
2. Pick your mode: Magic (uses Shine’s AI to decide what is shareworthy) or Manual (you select photos to share).
3. Invite others to the album.
(4/12)
People always talk about technical debt as it’s a bad thing. Like in life, debt can be a powerful tool if managed right; sometimes it makes sense to take debt to grow fast with minimal resources and pay it off later
We always wanted to build
@linear
as a great long term product company and today we are on the right track
If you’re going through layoffs/downsizing, you should consider applying to us:
👩🎨 Talented, caring team
📈 Profitable business
🥰 Best customers
.
@benjennin_gs
and I recently rebuilt and redesigned
@coinbase
home page with some chart action ✨📈✨ Now powered by React and Razzle.js along with all the good jazz
We're looking for an experienced React engineer to help us scale and craft
@linear
's frontend. We're performance and design focused and our users expect a lot of us. If you know a person who shares the passion for exceptional frontend engineering, I would love to talk to them
Life update: My work from Coinbase is featured in movie “Crypto” starring Kurt Russell. They took our buy screen, slapped fake title and called it a day. Have I made it?
Tonight several
@loom
customers reported being logged into accounts different from their own. Loom shut down the service, communicated “interruption” and never acknowledged a security issue. This is not how you do incident comms!
Building and launching Coinbase's redesign (and React rewrite) was one of the most fun and impactful projects I got to work on at Coinbase. Incredible team, and company
4yrs ago Coinbase pivoted their product & launched on PH
Going "from the original bitcoin wallet design, with the focus on transaction history, to a more "brokerage" design, focused on investing in digital assets like bitcoin and Ethereum." -
@jorilallo
A trend (bias?) I noticed over the past few weeks: we’re picking up and switching to a lot of new tools at
@linear
which are all build by teams using Linear. Glad to be sharing Slack channels with almost all of them and even connecting different companies to collaborate 🥰
Counter-point: setup your tools (Slack, Linear, Notion etc), light processes (design docs), engineering tooling (CI/CD) from day one, keep it simple and you’ll be much better off
Nothing like launching a new site, getting DDoS’d, doing ad-hoc Figma AMA and landing on
#1
on HackerNews in ~1.5 days… But then the reality kicks in!

No better way to end the year than having a key hire signed just as we head to the holidays. Incredibly proud of the
@linear_app
team and everyone who supported us this year 🙏
On this day 3 years ago, January 10th,
@linear

@jorilallo
@artman
and me.
Today:
- The team is 17 people
