One of the best but hardest benefits of committing to a local church is the de-centering of self it necessitates to love others nonjudgmentally and flourish. It is then often a severe mercy to have, in Bonhoeffer’s words, the “wish dream” shattered.

The church is not anti-technology, but it is radically pro-embodiment. Gathering matters. Presence matters. In-person and personal matters.

Find a church and stay there, men. It doesn’t have to be perfect—none are. Does it preach the Bible? Does it confront sin? Does it call you to trust in Christ alone? Does it direct you to live a holy life here and now? If so, put down roots and work for its peace and purity.

Invest more in your walk with God than your work for God. If you do the first, the second will take care of itself.

Being a small church pastor is hard at times. The littlest encouragement from 1 or 2 of your people has you on top of the world. The loss of 1 member makes you feel like a failure. However, success does not lie in numbers but faithful labor.

One of my favorite emails is replying to the student who is sorry for missing class because their wife is pregnant and they had a doctor's appointment. As the baby arrives, this follows up with a request for an extension on assignments that are due. I always smile. Students
