The problem with Vivek’s “creedal American nationalism” is not merely that it’s wrong. It’s that Vivek doesn’t even really believe it. If he did, it would require him to advocate the denaturalization of large swaths of the Left, who reject colorblind meritocracy in favor of

American identity isn’t a scalar quality that varies based on your ancestry. It’s binary: either you’re an American, or you’re not. You are an American if you believe in the rule of law, in freedom of conscience & freedom of expression, in colorblind meritocracy, in the U.S.

“Religious liberty” is now being used to green-light animal sacrifices This is the kind of wicked, ritualistic, third world practice that Christian societies once put an end to But now, drunk on postwar liberalism, most Christians won’t be able to articulate how this is wrong

This is obviously a different application than the Crossway Pastor who wants people to stop being so mean on social media.

So then the application becomes a warning about the dangers of expressing your heart and how you can be deceived (lack understanding, i.e. "fool") if expressing your heart is the north star of your life.

In the name of authenticity, many laud the expression of one's true self or heart. This is understood as a chief end of man in the modern mind. But this verse warns against that, going so far as to call these people fools.

BUT, if it is "heart," well that is different. "Heart" has to do with one's desires, will, passion, etc. It would basically have to do revealing or uncovering one's passions. That takes on a different contrast and one that highlights a different danger...

(Remember this is wisdom literature not law, so principles of wisdom that are generally true). So the application it the sermon is typically celebrating those guys who don't share their opinion as much vs. those that get on social media to give their opinion.

How are these different? Well if you use "opinion," then this verse because a warning to those who share their opinion on matters. This is in contrast to someone who seeks understanding (someone who doesn't share their opinion).

Translation come from Hebrew "leb" (not precisely but that's the root). The predominant meaning is "heart." Why did ESV choose "opinion?" Uncertain. It seems that "heart" is the better choice in this context.

"hit-gal-lot" coming from root "glh" compared between ESV and NKJV. So the Hebrew has to do with revealing or uncovering, hence translation "expressing." Let's focus on "heart" vs. "opinion"...

"yah-pos" carries the meaning of both "delight" and "pleasure" which are different but not in ways that too significant. Could be interesting distinction but want to focus on second line of proverb.

Interesting that the ESV differs from the translation in the NKJV as quoted above. ESV says "A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion." Let's see which is more accurate...
