A huge thank you to @TJStats for coming and speaking with us! Was a great opportunity to hear about public research, some fun computer vision, and how to grow a personal brand. An awesome way to close the year for @SUBaseballStats!
Tomorrow at 6:45 in Falk 200, we have a regular season edition club with ball talk, gage Syracuse Mets game interest, and e-board election info. Also, we have Thomas Nestico, @TJStats, as a guest speaker to talk about stuff models, public research, and his consulting for the Reds

Great explanation by @jacklambert__ and @sunshinevvn My huge question on this is what are the impacts in the youth bat market? I’m more curious than anything, no hypothesis, composite bats may already nullify this. I know I used to catch it off the handle all the time lol
What's the deal with the Yankees' new bats? Director of Baseball Ops @jacklambert__ explains the "torpedo bats" and their impact on the game today.

So where does this leave us... Relievers are HEROs. They save teams from danger and ensure wins in tough spots. We quantified how much of a HERO they are, found their roles as superheroes, and made pitcher-agnostic metrics to view their strengths and weaknesses.

Who are they? The league's best. It shows the diversity of reliever roles and how when used effectively, all of these pieces are needed within a bullpen. Each has a place, each has a role, and each are elite in their own way.

So whats our impact? The role of a closer is changing in baseball, bringing light to a new role -- the 🧯EXTINGUISHER🧯 They come into any spot (High Pressure, High Leverage) and get the job done. They're the guys you call with the game on the line when you need them the most.

Who was under/overvalued? Tanner Scott is a name that made the jump from Undervalued to Elite from 2023-2024. Clase, blowing a lot of saves in 2023, went from overvalued to the top player in our metric. Interestingly we thought Camilo Doval was overvalued before a dreadful 2024.

The rate leaderboard sheds light on some relievers that thrived in minimal appearances. Devin Williams was injured in 2024, but Edwin Uceta was someone who thrived in minimal appearances.

Here are the cumulative leaders. No surprise that efficient-effective relievers that blew minimal saves rise to the top.

Now let's look back at saves. They're ultra-specific, may not be in the highest leverage spots, are all created equal, and are biased toward better teams. Introducing: HERO Saves Taking each HERO situation when winning can account for all of these inefficiencies.

So who are our biggest HERO's? Emmanuel Clase and Tanner Scott lead the 2023 and 2024 standings, each about 4 standard deviations above the mean. But look at a Swiss army knife like Tyler Holton in 4th. HERO's aren't just your true closers.

How much of a HERO was Sborz? We take his actual change in Win Probability and compare it to his expected. This is done per inning for each player's appearance. In this inning, Sborz gave his team a 50.5% boost in win probability, equating (roughly) to half a win added!

We have our danger, but now we need our HERO's. Was Josh Sborz a HERO? Coming into a bases-loaded jam, he worked out of danger, gaining win probability when it was expected he would lose a significant amount.

Who creates danger? Final Danger+ -- Lower values mean they leave the game in precarious situations, hurting the rest of their bullpen. Net Danger+ -- Lower values mean they create danger during their outings, accounting for inherited danger unlike Final Danger
