I teach a class here at @WheatonCollege on the history of Christianity, focused on the first thousand years. One thought haunts me. We are right to look with shock and disappointment at the way medieval Christians accepted violence as a norm. 1/.

"Adrian on text says, 'I don't believe in any god, but I find this an amazing story, and I want to hear this hymn!'" Just had a fun conversation about The First Hymn with Hamish Macdonald on @abcsydney. He ended by asking me to recite some ancient Greek - oh, okay!

Legally, this is the correct move. But as a matter of prudence, churches shouldn't endorse candidates.

As Clive Staples also reminded us, if you can’t imagine how it’s possible to *Hate the sin but love the sinner*, you haven’t looked in the mirror recently.

Obviously just a cartoonish take on “hate the sin, love the sinner”—but it reveals a serious cultural blind spot. We have lost our moral imagination (not to mention a true notion of love) if we can’t respect and care for people we profoundly disagree with.
