I was in nationals park tonight when the gun shots rang out. While I ducked under my seat, watching people run, wondering if there was a shooter coming my way, I felt sacred but also angry. Angry at how predictable this sort of things is in the USA.
As this full-scale invasion happens please remember that this isn’t a sports match. I think it’s only human to feel some version of thrill and intrigue about war. But what’s happening right now is a nightmare. it’s people in pain and lives turned upside down forever.
Watch this vid. Often times the wonky behind the scenes stuff is the most impactful on human lives. This is the stuff we should care about
Thank you
@johngreen
for fighting for this.
I want to be very clear that no one is SUGGESTING that people will die because Johnson & Johnson is trying to immorally extend their patent on bedaquline an additional 4 years after its 20-year term.
Instead, people are STATING THE FACT that people will die because of Johnson &…
head of FIFA says we can't critique Qatar because we need to focus on critiquing the West. Why not do both? We've just published part 2 of our series How Europe Stole the World as well as our Qatar/world cup investigations. let's just call out shitty behavior wherever it exists
I just released the most ambitious video I've ever made. It's one I've wanted to make for 7 years. and I finally did. It's about Cyprus. It's 30 minutes. If you decide to watch, please take the time to stick with it. I promise you will learn and feel

from my team owned the edit on this. Its an uncomfortable but important piece that I’m glad was recognized.
The outpouring of kind, reflective words about Borders today has been emotional for me. This project started as a community-driven thing. The work was made better because you all cared. Today is sad but its also a day of celebration of what we all built together. Thank you
I've been working on an investigation for the past two months, and it's deeper than I've gone on a story in a long time.
This isn't just another video. It's the REAL reason McDonalds ice cream machines are always broken.
I made a video with the Times’
@BCAppelbaum
on a topic that makes me a little uncomfortable but one I think is vital to look at in the face. It’s live now on the NYT site and on YouTube.
“Affluent liberals tend to be really good at showing up to the marches and talking about how they love equality,” says
@johnnywharris
. “But by their actions, what they’re actually saying is, yes, we believe in these ideals, just not in my backyard.”
I've been a deep cave the past while, thinking about nothing other than how to tell 5 stories about India. Next week we start publishing these stories. They are the most ambitious pieces I've ever worked on. I hope you'll watch!
today im watching 2011
@Casey
and am reminded of how his laborious visual demonstrations resonated so much with me as a viewer and have since had a major influence on how I approach my own visual explanatory style.
Vladimir Putin right now before sending troops into Ukraine: "Modern Ukraine was entirely created by Russia”
This is as much a personal obsession with Russian history as it is a geopolitical move. I made a video a few weeks back explaining why:
I'm going to Greenland and looking for locals to help suggest stories, connect me with local communities, and potentially help with some on-the-ground logistics and production. If that's you, check out this form
Anyone at
@googlemaps
willing to talk to me about the policy on blurring certain satellite imagery? Seeing lots of blurred gov buildings in France. But most US military and gov buildings aren’t blurred. Very curious how these decisions are made.
If you live in Ukraine I really want to include your voice in my upcoming video. Im collecting accounts of what people are seeing and feeling. go to my instagram and send me a video
Why China is So Damn Big
Every country has an origin story, but some are more complicated than others. Here’s why China isn’t as big as you think.
Watch now:
We went deep to understand how Qatar won the bid to host the World Cup. What we found was a deep web of corruption and influence peddling. This video is our clearest explanation of how it all went down.
How Qatar Bought the World Cup ⚽️
For years I’ve been thinking about Swiss neutrality and the mountain bunkers that helped enable it. I finally went to the alps to try to find those bunkers. And I did. Lots of them. This is my journey, a video years in the making. I hope you enjoy.
It started with me looking at a map. But soon I got sucked into a deep dark secret, one Qatar doesn't want the world to see.
Qatar has trapped people in its country, and now they're hiding them from view.
NEW VIDEO:
My friend
@wendoverpro
had his video taken down because the author of some research he cited didn’t like that he cited her research (???!). You can’t own and copyright facts and information. I hope YouTube makes this right.
Many of you have reached out and asked why our latest video (How Cyberwarfare Actually Works) is now unavailable due to copyright claim. For those interested, a thread:
TLDR - It's a classic copyright abuse situation with some nuance.
2 years ago my wife

was a full time mom. She decided to start making videos for the internet. I knew she had the skills but worried she didnt know how hard it was to differentiate yourself online. Well, I’m an idiot. Today iz is 99 away from 100,000 subscribers
Founders: I need advice.
My startup (bright trip) is growing. We’re building something I really believe in.
We’re looking to raise a $2-$3M seed round. I’d love advice on whether to raise now or later. Any founders or VCs out there with thoughts I’d love to chat with you.

India is live This was a big story one I was nervous to try to tell. I got into telling stories about borders a few years ago, but this episode really epitomizes our whole goal: to show the human stories behind the lines on the map.
How The U.S. Ruined Bread 🥖
I wanted to know why the bread in Europe tastes so much better than the bread in America, so I went to Paris to find out.
Watch now:
A year ago, a study found the US was the best-prepared country in the world for a pandemic. So how did we bungle Covid-19 so badly? I worked with

Giant news: The next location of Borders is...INDIA. I'm so excited about this. But I need your help. Please give me story ideas! The more details/visual ideas the better!
Most people reading this are the red line on this graph. People under 30 don’t turn out for elections in the USA. if they did, our politics would quickly become unrecognizable. If you have any doubt on how to vote click this link
The Borders update: this USA season is going to be big and ambitious. Each episode feels like a giant thing and I’m learning loads about my own country. Many weeks left of reporting and production but we’re chipping away at it!
Today's video is the most personal story I've reported on. The story of Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS (Mormon) church.
The REAL Story of the Mormon Church
Hong Kong Episode one: where I explain how the city’s British roots have created such a unique cultural fusion that you can feel clearly today. Head to YouTube to watch the whole thing
For Episode 2 of Borders India we wanted to answer a simple question: How does India pull off the biggest elections in human history? The answer turns out to be fairly complicated.
Im seeing lots of reporting of Netanyahu/right wing factions in Israel tacitly "supporting" hamas with the goal of sabotaging palestinian unity/state. But I'm yet to see rock solid evidence that shows what this looked like. what should I read/who should I talk to?
ive been asking this Q for many years but I think now is the best time: is there a service where I can upload an interview in, say, Russian, and have it auto-transcribed and auto-translated into English as a caption file (.srt)? this MUST exist.
Borders gets an Emmy nomination. Impossible to express how much this was made possible by my partner in crime
@xtinathornell
who was the mastermind behind so much of the access/stories Not to mention
@JossFong
who edited me and

for direction & so many more.

This is what crowdsourced storytelling looks like. I just sent out an email to the Colombia locals asking all my questions and I’ve gotten almost 100 responses in like an hour. Details. Perspective. Contacts. Magic. Thank you to the locals flooding my reporting with local wisdom!
Riding in a helicopter deep in Colombia’s cocaine economy, realizing that the most important facet of the cocaine trade isn’t the big bad cartels but rather the rural farmers—families who grow coca because their country has given them no other option.
I worked with YouTube to make 9 explainer videos on the big trends that occurred in the platform this year. It was an amazingly eye opening project. Final product here:
Our new journalistic project is live and just published the first Episode. Lead by

Border Hong Kong is over. A reminder that the 700 locals who consulted with me throughout the process deserve a huge amount of credit for the success of these videos. Their perspectives and ideas are baked into this series. Thank you.
I spent days moving through Greenland, trying to get to a remote island village surrounded by sea ice. I went hunting with an Inuit man and his daughter. I ate dinner
with them. Greenland is a place full of magic and beauty that is not well understood:
Big Q: If you own an NFT for, say, a GIF what do you *actually* own in a literal sense. not the bits/pixels of the image right? the copyright of the creative work. You own a unique token but what IS that? bonus to people who can avoid using the word "certificate" and "autograph"
India has another border that lots of people don't know about. It's in the ocean and it's the root of a conflict on the water. Episode three of Borders India is out!
Border is coming back! And this time, we're taking on the USA. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time. Watch the announcement and then tell me your ideas on what I should cover!

India is one with lots of disturbing imagery. It's a really big important trend happening in India now, just one more story about the rise of violent nationalism around the world.
The Bermuda Triangle has been shrouded in mystery following a huge number of disappearances in the region. I wanted to answer the question: what’s really going on here?

So after my video asking
@johnnywharris
to do better, he actually reached out to talk. And he asked me to work with him on this series. And that’s why I’m so happy to say that I have contributed with fact checking and nuance for this piece!
Most people dont know that most of the music in Borders and on my YouTube channel is made by a 20 year old kid from his room in Portland Oregon. Tom Fox is going to be a force in the music industry someday soon, you should start listening to him now.
It’s sad to me that there are likely dozens of podcasts I would like but that I’ll never find. Why isn’t there a YouTube for podcast? Or maybe there is? Anyway. All of this is me trying to say: WHAT PODCAST SHOULD I LISTEN TO?
Ok. Here’s the
#VoxBorders
update: I’ve been in Costa Rica in na writing/research bubble and pleased to inform you that Borders Hong Kong (first location) is going to be awesome. I can tell already. So many amazing locals telling me their stories. I go end of May!
another cryto Q: (finally making this explainer) block chain = removing middleman right?. and yet, im going thru the process of buying an NFT and there's so much middle man feeling. Coin dealers, storefronts. feels so NOT different than using USD on paypal.
I like these boomerangs because they show me where I am. Drones are cool for the video you can record and everything but the best part isn’t the recording, it’s the moment Im there, zooming out and beholding my surrounding, in awe of the wider setting through which I’m moving.
