Some have asked for pics of the Revolutionary War fort we discovered inside an old plantation house in West Virginia. Almost none of the original Rev War frontier log forts survive. Historians believed an old log fort know as Byrnside’s Fort was still there, inside the walls of

Pretty neat what I just found in this old letter from 1860…. She’s probably been dead for 100 years or more.

But just months into his new job, a routine call turns into a brutal moment caught on camera that shocks an entire community, sparks protest, and forces the City to take action and to release the body cam and dash cam footage.

The stockade walls of the fort would have comprised of a line of vertical sharpened logs, seated in the ground like posts. If that wasn’t clear why this excites me… A 1 acre stockade would take 1,000 hand hewn and sharpened trees. Finding them 250+ years later is difficult.

Also my metal detecting eye noticed this silvery-item nearby hanging out of the same eroded ledge. Not sure whether it’s something cool or something not cool…

Another pic of what I’ve exposed so far… It’s dry and unbelievably difficult to dig. And cats are no help.

Maybe I just found one of the posts comprising the fort’s stockade wall? It’s buried deep in hard packed clay, perhaps well preserving it? The whitewash matches what we found in the fort’s exterior walls. View from the spot…

Note that axe marks up towards what’s left of the point, meaning it was intentionally made this way and wasn’t just broken or rotted off. At the bottom, it widens to include tree bark…

I looked closely and saw axe marks, indicating it definitely wasn’t a tree stump. I removed some dirt and it appears to be a hand hewn log, sharpened to a point, and painted with what appears to be an 18th century whitewash paint…

Out at the fort this evening, I was just looking around in the vicinity of where I found that bayonet, and I noticed a small piece of wood that looked out of place. 🧵

This is the powder horn that was with it - though not attached in any way. It has original brass tacks and a very old red paint residue on the end cap. I have to wonder if it belonged to an Indian at some point…

Southwest Virginia hunting bag, possibly made from confederate cavalry boots… with the original powder measure that looks to be made from a bayonet sheath and what looks to be a much older powder horn…

This is pretty cool… Campaign box belonging to a Civil War era dentist, with his name and location. He has been identified as well. “Dr AC Smith, Louisa, VA.” Got this in Louisa, Virginia… and it still has his dental tools and medicine bottles inside… 🦷⚒️

Revolutionary War era powder horn, professionally made. A really nice example with damage from some point. I don’t see any names or dates unfortunately. This could have seen service in the French Indian War as well. High capacity powder storage and still not too big to carry…
