Defining “sin” as “missing the mark”still misses the mark is we misdefine “the mark” as something like moral perfection rather than loving God wholeheartedly and loving our neighbour as ourselves.

The Church wasn’t meant to be like a law enforcement agency-enforcing moral laws on the public-it was meant to be more like a fire department-rushing into the word’s pain and brokenness to bring healing and redemption. Jesus sent us on a rescue mission as ambassadors of his love.

There are some who think that to always preach on the love of God is weak—that people will take advantage of that love. That’s a flimsy understanding of God’s love, for God’s love is the most powerful force in the universe to bring about change.
