Duas perspectivas.
Cordyceps do not manipulate the host behavior, Ophiocordyceps do. The zombie fungi are a mega diverse group. They are found not only deep in the forest, but can be near you! Check these and other info about

The genus Purpureocillium is known to cause eye infections in immunocompromised patients worldwide. We never know when the next outbreak into humans will happen, hence the need to understand biodiversity. But, some species are just pure beauty aren't they?!
It's official!!! I will start my own lab as Assistant Curator in Mycology at
@NYBG
! Looking forward to keep discovering the beauties of entomopathogenic fungi and their associated mycoparasites! Very excited to work on this temple of Science and Arts and its AMAZING facilities!

Happy to announce my new lab logo

Spiders are often found victims of fascinating fungi exhibiting exuberant appearance and intriguing biology. This one seems to have turned its host into a birthday cake with candles!

In my last article, published yesterday, I just wanted to make sure the president
@jairbolsonaro
and the Brazilian Government would be properly acknowledged.
Ophiocordyceps fulgoromorphila that usually dies in the Colombian forests. We can notice the darker, horizontal stem that remains underneath soil and the lighter part that erupts towards the open air, aiming to shoot the spores and infect new Fulgoridae hemipterans.
Just put my hands on the current issue of Persoonia, featuring my photo on the cover and an article with

Harvestman infected by an unknown species of entomopathogenic fungi. The orange structures covering the host are perithecia from which spores will be actively discharged upon maturity
A coral fungus I found this morning in Maine. Not the best for entomopathogens at this time of the year, but lots of mushrooms and litter/soil/wood fungi…
Beautiful "light-bulb" fungus, Ophiocordyceps buquetii, infecting a Polyrhachis found dead biting onto low epiphytes in Ghana. An African Zombie lineage. Soon in Mycologia

Hey entomology folks!
Is anyone able to identify this absolutely beautiful weevil infected by Ophiocordyceps curculionum s.l.?

It's out! My last paper with
@u_matsuura
describes a beautiful new species of Ophiocordyceps on social cockroaches in Japan and provide insights into the evolution of Blattodea-associated fungal parasites. Happy to start combining Art&Sci.
Gibellula fungi often builds a tower of spore-producing structures (conidiophores) that erupts from the spider bodies, spreading spores along the forest aiming to land on a suitable host.
What a beautiful work these architects of the forest can build.

That's Hyperdermium showering spores.A fungal parasite of hemipterans and plants.They use the insect body as a gateway into the plant tissue and grow hundreds of times bigger than its insect host, evidencing its dependence to the plant.

A single leaf can be a fascinating ecosystem. Here we see examples of hypocrealean fungi like hypocrelloids (yellow and orange) and Conoideocrella (second photo, the spiky one) infecting scale insects. Note the abundance of scales in the first photo, a feast for parasitic fungi.
Our last paper is out!The volume 2 of our series on Zombie-ant fungi across continents by myself,

Tolypocladium capitatum group, collected today at Catskills- NY. Very intriguing biology these mycoparasites have. In Japan some species within this genus also infect cicada nymphs, which is ecologically similar in many aspects with the deer truffles their North American cousins
Those are unusual spiraling Ophiocordyceps that erupts from spiders, attached on the underside of leaves. It was commonly found in the Great Smoky Mountains Natioanl Park during our surveys on 07/23. This group (aka "arachnophilous hymenostilboids") has been recorded just a few

Did you know there are recently discovered fungi that castrate and kill Cordyceps fungi!? It would be nice to see them in

Here is the study where we published these findings. Check it out!
I am happy to share our new paper is out in Persoonia! Here, myself,

Just came across this photo and realized (for the 1000th time) how amazingly diverse a single day of Cordyceps collections in the Brazilian Amazon looks like...
Dear Twitter friends,
I'm making available a small batch of t-shirts featuring amazing Cordyceps fungi, using my photos I took along my field expeditions
This one features a Torrubielloid fungus infecting a harvestman, Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil (12/2023)

Dear ArachnoTwitter,
Could anybody identify this spider please? Wiggins, Mississippi collected 2 days ago.
It seems to serve as a host for an interesting fungal pathogen, Purpureocillium aff. atypicola.
Thank you!
Ophiocordyceps paltothyrei infects Paltothyreus tarsatus, a huge ant that climbs up to vertical stem of saplings to die biting attached onto it, when infected. Commonly found, I collected 325 of those beauties in just 1h of survey in the Bunso Arboretum, Koforidua, Ghana 🇬🇭 2015
Paper accepted! New species of Zombie-ants coming out soon, featuring a novel lineage of zombie-Ponerines from Amazon 🇧🇷 and Ghana 🇬🇭 Soon in Mycologia special issue on animal-associated fungi
Spent the day working on photographing and preparing slides for microscopy for some cool Akanthomyces fungi infecting moths. Hopefully a very cool paper on moth parasites coming out in a few months.
I was missing that type of day….

Producing and transmitting spores into the next suitable host is one of the hallmarks of parasitic fungal lineages. Here are 4 examples of these important structures and how diverse they can be. 1. Purpureocillium; 2-3. Nigelia and 4. Cordyceps.

Cocoons are often enough to protect insect larvae from external threats and predation, but not so efficient against Cordyceps infections. Here we see two fruiting bodies erupting from a mummified larva. On the left is how we found it buried in soil and on the right is after
Hi all,
After 3 years I defended my PhD, I have decided that I should finally start applying for jobs. I work with Organismal Biology of arthropod-associated fungi and their mycoparasites. So, if you know about a position available out there, please let me know! RT please.

A pergunta é bastante pertinente.
A beautifully mature Ophiocordyceps unilateralis s.l. from Parque Nacional de São Joaquim - SC, Southern Brazil 12/2022. The fruiting body is ready to shoot over 300,000 spores along its life, creating a mine field below the infected carcass. 🧟♂️🍄
