New paper out today with Erik Recio and @jenseisert – we discuss when quantum learning models can avoid the measurement overheads that are usually incurred by the probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics and can be considered "single-shot" models. https://t.co/Tx36Ica9BJ

Quantum metrology in the finite-sample regime. A talk held at #QIP2024 by @jj_xyz on #quantummetrology that overcomes the need of discussing matters in the asymptotic limit, and introduces what could be called "PAC quantum metrology". CC @SumeetKhatri6, @dsfranca, @phfaist.

Did you want to learn more about how to use Haar measure tools in Quantum Information and things like unitary t-designs, but felt intimidated by the heavy use of representation theory? Then my new tutorial may be of interest to you. https://t.co/CVtXthtr4U

I would really like to thank my co-authors @SumeetKhatri6, @dsfranca, @jenseisert and @phfaist for their endurance and patience in finishing this 107 page behemoth of a paper. I’m really proud of the result and I think all the hard work has paid off!

We devote a long section to the many open questions this reading of metrology has to offer. Because there is a strong connection to hypothesis testing, we believe that people with a strong quantum information theory background can leave their mark on quantum metrology!

There is much more still. E.g., we also show that the optimal success probability can be computed through a convex program, establish the properties of the quantities in our framework, relate them to single-shot entropy measures and generalize to the parametrized channel case.

We further study a question of distincitvely information-theoretic flavor, namely how fast the success probability of an estimation problem approaches one when the tolerance is kept constant. We give the exact asymptotic rate in the commuting case.

We build on this result to construct an analogue of the quantum Cramér-Rao bound that is valid in the finite-sample regime and that contains explicit correction terms pertaining to the finite-sample nature of the problem.
