🌏 New job alert! 🌏 I've been appointed the North Asia Correspondent for @FinancialReview . I'm taking over from the splendid @MikeSmithAFR , who dodged and weaved his way out of China in 2020. I will begin this posting on 1 April and will be operating out of Tokyo, Japan.

Australian geologist Mo Munshi is trapped in Mongolia, living sick and destitute under a travel ban that remains in place despite his completion of a seven-year jail term. A yarn: https://t.co/D5F8iuPL0e
afr.com
Mo Munshi’s story is a cautionary tale for Australian executives plying their trades in far-flung regions of the world.

Things I've noticed in Tokyo: when I'm at the coast, there is a steady stream of tankers and ships on the horizon. When I'm having a glass of wine on my rooftop, there's a steady stream of satellites (or drones?) moving across the sky.

After a four year intermission, I'm back in Beijing. I've got my foreign reporter’s press card — and with that little piece of plastic, China’s four year black-listing of Australian media ended. Here's my first story back here for @australian

First ride on the Sydney Metro. Heart swells watching all the chuffed NSW transport staff.

Practicing good journalism is difficult. But it's extremely important for democracy. Those that hold institutions and powerful people to account are valuable and should be paid...at least in line with bloody inflation. @FinancialReview @withMEAA #DontTorchJournalism

Huge, huge news: Michael Stutchbury, the editor-in-chief of The Australian Financial Review, has called time on the role after almost 13 years leading Australia’s premier business, financial and political publication. https://t.co/DZRfetILdN

The 67-year-old led the paper through six PMs and thousands of editions. He will be succeeded by former executive editor of The Sydney Morning Herald, James Chessell.

It turns out, Japan's major power companies on-sell about half the LNG they buy from Australia to other countries in South East Asia. https://t.co/TI6RZUj3lZ

Sitting at an event surrounded by Fashion Ladies of Tokyo. They are energetically discussing the local Governor elections. I can’t understand anything except the occasional “Kishida”. Never been more motivated to grasp Japanese. It’s like conversational tennis above my head. 😔

While diversifying the semiconductor supply chain away from Taiwan is good for global business, it leaves the island nation more exposed than ever. Much of its protection stems from the West’s need to safeguard the semiconductor supply chain. https://t.co/GcBGu8kPQQ

For years the island democracy depended on its outsized semiconductor industry to protect it from China’s advances. But huge success comes at a price.

Listening to men at an investment conference earnestly discuss their hope to "get semis" anywhere else in the world, not just Taiwan.

Lucas Wang, 39, who runs a mobile phone shop in Taipei, whipped out his phone to illustrate where China’s warships currently sit. “Every day they are getting closer in the air and the sea, and we all know it,” he said. https://t.co/kQkus4Vn6w

In the streets of Taipei, people appeared sanguine as they went about their daily lives, as China conducted military drills.
Beijing has ratcheted up tensions in the Taiwan Strait, sending warships to surround the self-ruled island as fighter jets staged mock strikes in a “punishment” after Taiwan’s pro-independence president, Lai Ching-te, took office. With @andrewtillett
