Mahomes' Super Bowl-winning pass was the 3rd option on a 2-read play. It should have gone to someone else. It might have been a penalty.
Here's the rest of the story on a pass that will go down in Chiefs' history: the perfectly imperfect "Tom and Jerry"
KU fullback/tight end walk-on Jared Casey from Plainville, Kansas — who caught the game-winning 2-point conversion — had never played a snap of offense for the Jayhawks until tonight. He filled in because of injury. "It just popped into my hands," he said. "A surreal moment."
Baylor coach Scott Drew shook a few KU players’ hands in the tunnel going back to the locker room, including Dedric Lawson’s. “Let’s go, baby. Let’s go Big 12,” he said, minutes after his own season had just ended.
KU may not win the national championship, but over four months it proved — by every reasonable measure — that it was the best team in college basketball.
That absolutely should be acknowledged in some way.
KU football walk-on Jared Casey already getting some NIL work in after Saturday’s game-winner vs. Texas. Shooting TV ads today for Applebee’s commercials to run in Kansas.
Chiefs’ Frank Clark says he gave up drinking alcohol this offseason. Was part of diet change that resulted in noticeable weight loss. Also says he had a heart-to-heart with Andy Reid after the season where Reid was honest with Clark about him not reaching expectations in 2021.
Baylor Bears make their way through KU’s players in tunnel after leaving court following upset loss. Coach Scott Drew leading the way to wish the Jayhawks good luck.
QB Carter Stanley on if he's sensing a foundation is being laid at KU: "I'm pissed my eligibility's almost out. These coaches are going to get it right. These guys in this locker room believe. I'd play for Coach Miles and Coach Dearmon for 100 years if I could."
I still can't wrap my head around the events that had to take place for Udoka Azubuike — in a four-year KU career — to not play one minute in the Big 12 Tournament.
Have to go back to beginning of play to appreciate L'Jarius Sneed's craftiness here. Goes from "what's up with my helmet" and "just messing with my gloves and backpedaling" to stealth rusher to Brady's lap ... all in about 4 seconds.
OSU coach Mike Boynton on KU/AFH: “With all due respect to our program, over the last two decades, they have been the standard of our league. Our fans have been great, but this place is packed every night, not because of who they are playing but because they are playing."
Rookie WR Skyy Moore says he sits right behind Patrick Mahomes in film meetings. "Whenever I've got a question, I just go tap him real quick. And he's always able to whisper the answer to me or how he wants things done. I try to stay close to him."
Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco on seeing JuJu get hit: "Honestly that right there brought tears to my eyes. ... I haven't cried since college right there, and I felt every emotion of it. Right there, it brought that dog out. I was ready to play hard."
A year ago this week, Jason Bean and KU lost at Oklahoma State, 55-3.
OSU had 21 first downs in the first half; KU had 0.
Bean completed 3 of 10 passes for 10 yards with two interceptions. He was benched at halftime.
This is a moment — and story — of perseverance.
The fastest NFL ball-carrier on a play this season, per
@NextGenStats
, is Tyreek Hill at 22.01 mph. So I don't know how to wrap my head around this tweet:
Absolutely the correct decision for David McCormack. Will come back to Lawrence the rest of his life as a basketball hero, and his shot over Manek will likely get a mural at Allen Fieldhouse somewhere. Can't go out more on top than that. His legacy is secure — let that be it.
Here's a fun one:
Jalon Daniels led KU with 544 passing yards tonight in the Liberty Bowl.
Two years ago, Jalon Daniels led KU football with 718 passing yards ... for the season.
Bill Self, on Jayhawk Gameday Live, about coaching today after recent passing of father Bill Sr.: "My deal today is to do our job. I'm not a fan of K-State, but I can guarantee you, he's even less of a fan of K-State. The best way we can bring him honor is to do our job today."
The last time KU lost three times to an opponent in a season was 1983. That was against Oklahoma State ...
which had a young guard on the roster named Bill Self.
WR Andrew Parchment said an older KU fan approached him on the field after the win, telling him, "You have no idea what this means to the community." Parchment smiled. "I'm just so happy we can bring some joy to Lawrence, Kansas."

KU football hero Jared Casey's parents talked to me during a stop north of Waco. They had 9+ hours to go before getting home to Plainville, KS, and their minivan just passed 264,000 miles. Now, a video of them is going viral. "It brought me to tears, too."
I wish I could go back 10 years and show Bill Self this clip and say, "This is the point guard that will save you in your next NCAA championship game" just so I could see his reaction.
KU Athletics has signed coach Bill Self to a lifetime contract. It's a new five-year rolling agreement that automatically adds one year at the conclusion of each season for the remainder of his career.
WR Andrew Parchment on what K-State did to slow down KU's offense: "They just came in here and beat our ass, to be honest with you. There ain’t nothing else to say."
Bill Self now legitimately has two NCAA Tournament teams on one roster. I have no idea what you do with that, but if there's any year to crazy things up with full-court presses or Roy Williams 5-for-5 substitutions, it's this one.
Bill Self, on postgame radio, talking about the KU students' overrated chant for OSU's Cade Cunningham: "Do our students watch ball? I mean, because that dude is good."
The KU charter plane just took off from Lawrence Municipal airport, with occupants entering via a side road not accessible to the public. We did not see who was on flight. Flight Tracker info has that plane destined for Baton Rouge, La., tonight.
KU just announced it has formally submitted its appeal for Silvio De Sousa, challenging the 2-season penalty he received from the NCAA. KU says it will not have further comment until the process is completed.
KU's WRs are all great stories. Grimm almost didn't make it to KU when old coaches changed their minds on if he could play. LJ Arnold announced he was transferring from KU, went into the portal, then came back. Skinner's a former walk-on. All of them showing out tonight.
Bill Self on winning w/toughness vs. KSU after recent passing of father Bill Sr.: "To win this one like that was something extra, because the way we won it would've been exactly the way he lived. Grind it out, and make the most of every situation, even when it doesn't look good."
The Big 12 announced today that two Jayhawks won conference scholar-athlete awards for their respective sports, as voted on by league coaches: Kate Steward (women's swimming) and David McCormack (men's basketball).
Bill Self says new K-State coach Jerome Tang is "a great hire. He's a good guy." Self also joked about contacting Tang this week. "I left him a message today. His answering machine already said, 'What a great day to be a Wildcat.' And I said, 'I beg to differ.'"
Nearly 100 camping groups for KU-Missouri. Largest number I’ve seen in some time ... and that’s for a game four days away where KU will be about a 20-point favorite.
Make no mistake. This one means a lot - and always will.
First paragraph, NCAA states the KU men's basketball alleged violations are "egregious, severe and are the kind that significantly undermine and threaten the NCAA Collegiate Model."
Chiefs GM Brett Veach said today Rashee Rice/Justyn Ross would start out as "package" players. The hope is they produce enough to graduate & become every-down WRs later in season. Right now, Skyy Moore is one of those every-down guys. Veach expects a "big jump" from Skyy this yr.
KU scored 1.398 points per possession — the highest mark against Villanova's defense in the last five seasons — while scoring zero fast-break points. It's the first game all season the Jayhawks didn't score in transition.
Bill Self says rumors of him leaving have been used against him in recruiting. Reiterates he’s not going anywhere. Has a few years left on his contract but hopes to extend that soon.
