Occasionally I write an "essay" post where I use a little bit more of an expressive tone. Today's essay is about the importance of defeating absolute poverty. https://t.co/ai8x4KRfli

This type of creativity is rare in tourism ads these days, most of which blend into each other. This is different, a typical understated Norse sense of dry humor. From @VisitOSLO. Well done, more needed in this series.

Excellent talk. I think Sumpter does a great job of explaining the limits of statistics. Great sequencing with the follow-on "interactive" and "chaotic" ways of thinking. He spends less time on the last way as an incentive to buy his book which is fair.

Could you imagine any more vanilla, humanless, colorless way to engage your users than popping this up after I linger on a doc page for a minute or so?

The news cyclle is similar: Don’t form an opinion on a topic based on what was blasted to you. If you want to form an opinion (and you don’t always want/have to), seek out the information you need on your own.

One thing I tried to imprint in my kids: if you get lost and need help, don’t accept help from someone who offers it to you. Instead, ask for help from any random adult.

I grew up watching football (what Americans call soccer) and love watching it at big events like WorldCup. But I have to admit that NBA playoffs is probably the most fun sports event to watch.

I dug up this gem from my ms thesis in 1998: "The Jacobian of F will then be a sparse 60000 × 60000 matrix and the inverted Jacobian will be a fully populated matrix of the same size and would thus be impossible to store (it would take 28.8 Gb to store it in double precision!)."

PSA: In the US, 55% of all mobile users use Safari as their browser. Yet, @AmericanExpress does not support Safari for filing an extended warranty claims form. They don't tell you this on their web site (so you're in for a lot of frustration before you find out).

If you want evidence of this, look at the growing use of BSL/FSL style licenses that restrict commercial use only for a limited time period and then convert to a standard OSS license. It's literally a "headstart license".

I've become convinced that for software startups, the software you write that takes you to product/market fit is your head start. It is not your moat. Your moat is your customers and your distribution capabilities. A head start is valuable and important. But it's not a moat
