By far the thing I enjoyed the most about this work was the incredible group of people I got to do it with. Nobody could ask for a better mentoring team than Harmit and Melody, and @mattcchan is an amazing labmate and collaborator. I'm beyond fortunate to share this with them.

I like to think this work has a little something for the integrin enthusiasts, the gut biology girlies, the cryoEM creatives, and even the immunology and immunotherapy ideologists. Mostly, though, I think it's just a beautiful example of evolutionary serendipity.

This finding was striking to us because the first I domain ligand was likely collagen; this is an ancestral function that has been retained and expanded since the I domain's inception. We propose a model for how this domain insertion was poised for success right from the get-go.
